Kakaako Pet Hospital

Dr Koreyasu is a great vet. They also have boarding service. I had to leave my Tina for a week. They took very good care of her,

They are okay. Parking can be tight, the wait can be long, and sometimes the vets don’t seem to listen or answer questions very well. Overall, it’s fine if it’s just for routine check ups but maybe not the best for anything more complex or urgent.

I preface my review with 2 comments:
1) I had a similar experience as Janice H. some time back and as such, I never thought to go here and
2) I/​my cat Sassie was not a patient here
Here is my story:
My cat Sassie was under Kapalama Pet Hospital’s care but Sassie needed emergency attention. I called Kapalama and frantically told them to call Kakaako as I need to take Sassie right away. Not waiting for an answer, I hung up, grabbed Sassie and got her to Kakaako Pet Hospital.
Five minutes did not pass when I arrived at Kakaako. Their staff immediately took Sassie under their care (it was literally like a scene from ER; only this scene was a Pet ER).
Dr. Koreyasu is the caring and compassionate doctor who made sure I was okay and assured me that Sassie did not suffer. She permitted me to stay with Sassie for as long as I chose to and for a few minutes (which felt like an eternity), she stayed with me and gave me words of comfort. Now how cool is that? The entire staff extended comfort and paid condolence when I left.
I will go back to Dr. Koreyasu with my cat Patches.
By the way, they are a sister clinic to Kapalama Pet Hospital and Dr. Hirata. So, regarless of where you live; you can be sure your pets are in good hands.

My dog had major infections on his leg that wasn’t healing with antibiotics. Dr. Sakamoto removed the dead tissue to allow the healing process to begin. He and staff we’re very caring and attentive to my big boy and that means everything to me. Everyday my dog is doing good and healing up nicely. Mahalo Dr. Sakamoto and staff… you all are pretty AMAZING!!!

Please read. Despite the 1 star review, I would still recommend going back to this place.
In my entire life, I’ve probably written 3 reviews, 2 of which were for school purposes. But after this vet visit, I have to write one to warn others. The 1 star is meant for Dr. Sakamoto, not the hospital as a whole, not the techs, not the receptionists, and not the other vet. It is meant only for Dr. Sakamoto. He is smart and knowledgable and knows how to create revenue. That’s what the 1 star is for.
He shows zero compassion, has zero people skills, lacks any empathy/​sympathy, and is condescending. He also gives off a I-​hate-​animals-​but-​love-​money-​too-​much-​to-​quit sort of vibe. I was warned beforehand about this doctor by a current client as well as a worker at the clinic. I should have walked out the moment a WORKER has to mentally prepare me for the doctor’s consultation, but I was desperate and needed to know what was wrong with my dog.
It was the only time in my life I had ever wanted to walk out on in the middle of a vet visit. It was that painful for me to be in the room. He really comes at you business like and in a condescending manner. I’ve also never seen my dog that fearful at a vet’s office.
Summary: Sakamoto may have aced his way through vet school, but was never taught people skills. It should not be too much to ask for a vet who has both knowledge/​passion for his or her job as well as an ability to build relationships with pet owners. By the sounds of the other clients I talked to, Dr. Koreyasu would be it. So if given a choice, ask for her. If stuck with Sakamoto, go elsewhere.

Update for our review. our concerns about antibiotic use and over prescribing came to a head this past Friday. We had an appointment because or dog was having diarrhea on and off for the past week. My main concern with Dr. Sakamoto as he is consistently prescribing abx (this time for it’s «Anti-​Inflammatory effects» for our dogs diarrhea. He personally analyzed the stool and attributed the diarrhea to raw hides our dog was eating and seemed very sure that it was not bacterial. After our dog received a steroid shot we were sent home with medications for «Anti-​inflammation medicine» which turned out to be Flagyl (abx). I called the office and met with some resistance to my concerned. After being transferred to the tech he was sure that I had been told it was antibiotic in the office. I am extremely sensitive to antibiotic use in the facility and I know for sure the word antibiotic was not used. After relayed that I don’t think that I’m going to get what I need he agreed to authorize me return the medication. Upon arriving to the facility Dr. Sakamoto wanted to talk to me. We did. It was not pleasant. I voiced my concerns. I felt intimidated as he really wanted us to use the abx and I felt unheard of my concerns. This happened in front of most of his staff in the front of the house, I don’t like confrontation and to have it in front of people I don’t know makes me even more uncomfortable. Needless to say we went forward with the treatment and our dog seems like she is back to normal after a few days. It was an unpleasant experience and I’m glad that I don’t have to go back to there again. I got my records from the facility today and the manager spoke with me a while which was nice. She had great service recovery skills and I felt heard.
Overall the service here is good as long as you go with Dr. Sakamoto orders or choose another vet to see you and your animal.
I’ve been in Surgical/​Trauma/​Neuro Intensive care for several years, my wife is a Pharmacist. We have valid concerns and I would recommend anyone thinking of going here to read this again.
Concerns:
Overprescribing
I was never given the option to prick up prescriptions at a pharmacy which could have saved us money. (I prefer to pick up meds at the vet, but sometimes I can get medications for much cheaper at a pharmacy, I like to have the choice).
Antoibiotic use (I always go back to the first instance we had with Dr. Sakamoto). Scenario of a 6 – 7 month healthy dog with no preexisting conditions and 1 baby tooth that hadn’t fallen out. Plan was to Intubate (breathing tube) and sedate with medications, extract the tooth, and then do a round of antibiotics to prevent infection. Very aggressive for a baby tooth. I wouldn’t go this far even with a real human baby especially because the tooth and gums had no signs of infection.
Prices are on the higher side, but you get good service.

Please DO NOT patronize this place.
If you adopt a kitten/​cat from a rescue place and there is ANYTHING AT ALL wrong with it, you will be told to return it. It can be even just a cold or anything minor. These doctors do not support rescues if the animal has even the tiniest thing wrong.
Shame on them! I adopted a rescue kitty from CatFriends that had a cold and they basically insisted I return it. I could not as I had fallen in love with the little one.
I heard from others that this place was bad mouthing sick animals from rescue places, especially CatFriends because they give out a free initial exam with an adoption, but did not believe it until I actually came upon the situation myself.
Needless to say, I will NEVER do business with them and my cat is now thriving!
I am so happy, yet so upset at a veterinarian that cannot support rescues.
I would NEVER recommend this place.

Only positive thoughts come to mind when I think of Kaakako Pet Hosptial and especially Dr. Koreyasu! Our ‘first kid’ (they furry one that is), has been seen by Dr. Koreyasu since we returned home from WA state in 2010. We followed her once she opened her current practice in Kakaako. The staff is always friendly and Laura her office manager always has a smile on her face! Dr. Koreyasu prides herself in being progressive as noted by her beautiful state of the art clinic, equipment, and frame of mind. She frequently shares her interest in complementary and alternative medicine for application in addition to and/​or instead of traditional, strictly medical techniques. On more than one occasion we’ve talked about the various courses she’s taken to expand her skills and enhance her practice. As a therapist myself, Dr. koreyasu has even discussed plans for initiating physical therapy for animals in her practice! Higher grade pet food and snacks are also promoted and available for those interested. Dr. koreyasu, who is born/​raised locally, also has a straightforward, genuine, and honest bedside manner. She is very approachable and will not provide extra service unless they are needed/​wanted by the patron. As a healthcare professional, I appreciate having that same comprehensive quality of healthcare available for our furry buddy!
The Kakaako pet clinic is conveniently and centrally located on Queen Street between Ward and Cooke. It’s a quaint and welcoming yellow ‘house’ structure nestled amongst the neighboring industrial jungle. The interrior was very well thought out and is immaculate every time we’ve been in. Parking is never a problem with multiple stalls available for patrons. A grassy oasis is also smartly provided near the parking lot for potty relief! Boarding services are also available as needed. Overall, we have loved the experience and care we’ve received from Dr. Koreyasu and crew. And, although others have noted price, outstanding service and quality of care make any cost of caring for your furry friend, well worth it!

We love our vet! Our dogs are part of our family. We trust Lii Alaina & Wilson Slate in the care of Dr. Koreyasu at Kakaako Pet Clinic. Their friendly and knowledgable staff are kind to our boys and treat them with compassion. We’ve been thru treatments including annual visits to dental cleaning to ultra sound exams to more serious surgeries. In addition to western medicine they also offer treatments with Chinese herbs and acupuncture. Some days have later hours which have proven helpful. My entire family goes there too.

I called in on a Monday morning hoping the Doc could see my dog asap. The day before he had been vomiting, would not even look at steak, and could not hold any water down trying desperate to hydrate himself. The staff who answered my call was so kind and had me come down ASAP and would squeeze me in even tho the Doctor was in surgery. Thank god because had I waited another day my baby would not have survived. Dr Koreyasu had his X-​ray done and quickly got the ultrasound tech in ASAP knowing that he was in desperate need of surgery. Later we found out he swallowed a whole peach pit, which was stuck in his tummy blocking any food or water into his system. Dr. Koreyasu is by far the BEST vet I have ever known in my lifetime of owning pets. She was intuitive and quick with figuring out what the next step would be to save his life. Yes these matters can be costly but it was worth every penny. I cannot thank you enough Dr. Koreyasu for saving my Bruno baby :’)

We have been with Dr. Koreyasu for awhile now and she has always taken really good care of all our pets. The new office is very clean and the staff are so friendly and helpful. It is even better now that they are closer to where we live!

Ok, on 10÷07÷14, my baby couldn’t breath well and because of my baby’s emergency, I called to bring him in and was told they were booked and they’d have to squeeze us in. I told the girl my dog is having a hard time breathing, but she insisted they were to booked to see him. I said «FORGET IT, I’M GOING TO TAKE HIM TO THE VETERINARIAN EMERGENCY REFERRAL ON KAPIOLANI!» And she tells me, «Oh, are you sure?» HELLOOOOO, MY DOG IS HAVING A HARD TIME BREATHING AND YOU «CAN’T SQUEEZE US IN!!» And I hung up, the next day, I went for my baby’s records and told them the reason why I was no longer their client. I got an apology from one of the girls who got his records for me and I left! Glad To Be Outta There!!!

My husband, and I with our 5 month old puppy are looking to move to Honolulu for a year from San Francisco. We needed information on Quarantine Program 5 day release, and I randomly called Kakaako Pet Hospital and was pleasantly surprised on the excellent service and information we received from their receptionist Rae.
She spent plenty of time reading off the information to me, and even called the Quarantine directly to get me the correct answers I needed. This is what I call amazing customer service. This saved me hours of research.
You guys will definitely have my business, simply based on the help I’ve already received by Rae. Well job done and this is what I call service!

I went to Kakaako Pet Hospital as they participated with the Humane Society in the neuter now program and I regret it, not the service they provided but for the cost.
The doctor was in and out to meet my puppy for less than five minutes and the rest was left to the technicians; but what I don’t understand after all that is how their pricing works — it cost me almost $ 750 including the $ 150 neuter now certificate to get my dog neutered. He also got his baby teeth removed which that I wasn’t against, but from my understanding the neuter now program is supposed to alleviate some costs of the neutering/​spaying process yet affordability doesn’t somehow fit into that equation.
The process was quick and his scar healed quickly and well; the only other gripe was that I had to get my car but had to carry my poor Aji who just had a life altering procedure because they couldn’t accommodate him past 5.
I highly recommend checking out other veterinarians before making your choice to come to Kakaako — if you’re looking to spend money like crazy this is the place to get ripped off!

Hopefully this will save you some of the time and effort it cost me. This vet participates in the Humane Society Neuter Now program, but what they don’t tell you is that it will cost you $ 250 in ADDITION to the $ 125 you pay the Humane Society. I understood that participating vets are allowed to charge more. However, when I called to make an appointment, they refused to tell me on the phone. All the woman would say was that it would be an additional $ 50 for the exam, and they cannot tell us until after the exam how much extra it will cost (if anything). In other words, I had to make an appointment and come in first.
So, I made an appointment for two weeks later (the earliest they could see us). When I got there, they had me fill out paperwork that asked a lot of private questions such as SSN, names and ages of children, etc. The minute I get to the exam room, rather than examining my dog, they presented me with a cost sheet showing that the neutering would be an additional $ 200, along with the exam fee, plus taxes. The total, with the neutering certificate, was going to be $ 375!
I complained that if I had known this, I wouldn’t have made the appointment in the first place, because our usual vet, who doesn’t participate in the Humane Society program, charges just a little more than that for the surgery. I questioned how they refuse to give a quote on the phone, but yet they can tell me it’s an additional $ 250 when I come in, before they even LOOK at my dog! Dr. Koreyasu came in to explain that they don’t give quotes on the phone because of people shopping for prices. (Isn’t that what a smart customer does?) She said she wants to see the person and check them out first. The person. Not the dog. So I explained what a waste of time it is for the person to have to do this!
She said they offer this really for their regular clients. If that’s the case, they should tell people. And if this is just to fish for new clients, then it truly isn’t for the public service that I’m sure the Humane Society intended the neutering program to be. This was a huge waste of time and I cannot express how disgusted In am with the poor customer service.

It was our dogs (puppy), first visit with Dr. Koreyasu and it went really well. Since were newbies to owning an indoor pet, she went through a list of things to expect with our breed of dog and spent a good amount doing so. Who does that in this day and age? I told her I wish she was an internal medicine doctor instead of a vetenarian, lol. Only because my dog got more time with her than I do at my doctor’s visits.
She answered all of our questions and went over what treatments they applied to our dog. I love the fact that they do free nail trims, so long as your dog is still a puppy. She reviewed everything that we feed our dog and she made several suggestions on what other foods we can incorporate into his diet. I also enjoyed hearing what she feeds her dog (s) and the benefit of it not smelling, I’m probably leaning towards feeding our puppy that diet.
I loved the fact that we were not rushed and the price of the visit seemed fair. The staff had a lot of aloha and were wonderful as well!
If you’re looking for a great place to take your pet, I highly recommend Kaakako Pet Hospital.

Not my vet, but came here for a friend because his dog had puppies!
The doctor was very knowledgable about what to do and what to tell my friend.
It was a bit small inside, compared to the size of the building outside. I was expecting it to be larger. This vet is located right next to Fresh Café and there’s lots of parking too! My pets go to the Pet Hospital on King Street, but if that place didn’t exist or closed down, my pets may probably go here.

I became a puppy mommy at the beginning of this year and Dr. Koreyasu has been fantastic as a vet for Kai and as a resource for me in raising him. Kai is going to be a massive dog, he’s currently only 7 – 8 months old but is around 65lbs, and will probably continue to grow. Dr. Koreyasu really walks you through the puppy process and holds your hand probably a little longer than most vets, but for me it was very much so welcomed. She guides you through destructive behaviors, where to go for obedience school, how to interpret of what your puppy is doing and what you can do to curb bad behavior early on.
I have friends that are seeing other vets for their doggies on Oahu and it seems as though Dr. Koreyasu’s prices are very reasonable. Each visit so far has been around $ 80 and that includes all vaccinations, medications, and testing. Kai also gets a complimentary ear clean and nail trim every time he goes.
I love the set up of her office, there is a lawn outside that your doggie can use to do their thing if they have to and parking has never been an issue even though there are only 6 or 7 spots.
Its very easy to get appointments and I believe a new vet was added to the team recently to help with appointment availability. The staff at the front always seems to remember your pet, they are very responsive to requests for medication orders and in answering questions. I highly recommend Dr. Koreyasu and her team if you are looking for a vet.

Do you live in the metro area and in need of a veterinarian? Look no further than Kakaako Pet Hospital. They are conveniently located on Queen Street next to Fresh Café. They have about 6 or so parking spaces, a nice green grass lawn for your pooch to do his thing before/​after his appointment, friendly staff, a very clean facility, and great docs.
They currently have two docs — Dr. Koreyasu and Dr. Sakamoto. Dr. Sakamoto is the newest staff member and he is Board Certified. He seems very knowledgeable and experienced. He’s demeanor is a little stiff and «all business», but what’s important is that he knows what he’s doing.
Their files are electronic and they even take a picture of your pet so that they know who is who.
