Island Veterinary Care

Everyone is very friendly and they are super accommodating. My one pet tends to always have problems and they can always fit me in either that day or the next. Dr. Lau is a great vet and has never steered us wrong in the care of my pets. In emergencies I have been able to reach him for assistance with no issues. I can not say enough positive things about this clinic!

They charge too much for things you don’t need. I was originally quoted for a $ 48 check up for my puppy before having her nurtured which was going to be $ 600. Than after the check before the surgery they charged me $ 300 for the blood work alone. So I took my busniess elsewhere. I recommend kalihi pet clinic for nurturing they only charge $ 150. What I wast of $ 300 but lesson learned. Don’t do what I did!

Well Dr. Lau contacted me — so I was hopeful — There was a reason I had this fresh in my memory, I had just adopted a tiny kitten and Dr. Lau had done the Neutering — she had problems can’t I touch her belly — I think she was way too young to be neutered all of 2 lbs, but she was feral and it’s a great service to fix the feral population. I was just so surprised that some kitten so tiny could be fixed and so sore for so long. I wrote my first review and he wrote back– Yes he cares! I told him my story, he didn’t respond :(I guess since my cat died in 2006 it does not matter — the fact that I still miss her and the way I lost her. Finally 8 years later I may have found a replacement kitten and I hope she will someday be OK with belly rubs.

Dr. Lau and his staff are the greatest! My animals received the best of care when they needed it most. He is very compassionate and takes your feelings into consideration at all times. He cared for my very sick big dog, Koa, and went beyond the extra mile to do whatever he could to help him get better but it couldn’t be done so we decided to have him put to sleep after all options failed. Koa was euthanized at home with us right there. It was so sad but at the same time, it was done in the privacy of our home and in a very professional and compassionate manner. I think most vets wouldn’t have gone the extra mile with a case like Koa’s but Dr. Lau did and he does it every single time. Dr. Lau has also given excellent care to our cats and saved the life of my Chihuahua mix who almost died. I cannot stress enough how great Dr. Lau and his staff are. I wouldn’t trust my babies with anyone else! In my book, he deserves 10 stars but they only let me give 5!

Our family dog was suffering and Dr. Lau and his staff accommodated our heartbreaking plea to ease his suffering with euthenasia at our home.
It was done with the perfect combination of professionalism and compassion, and eased our Buddy’s transition to peace.
We have used Dr. Lau for our 2 dogs in the past, and have always received the highest level of care. No, they aren’t cheap, but there is no wait time, and you get the best service.

My dog was recently bitten by another dog. It happened at night (of course!) and Dr. Lau was available by phone, talked us through everything and gave us our options. With his help, we got everything stable and decided to bring her in the next day. Dr Lau was great, as well as the tech Chris. They were gentle, explained everything clearly, and were very understanding.
We are now resting comfortably and although it was not a fun situation, we made it! Thanks Island Veterinary Care!
*also, regarding the issue of them being over-​priced, they are actually less expensive than my previous vet on Kauai. And you get what you pay for, always!

Adopted our kitten from them, they are awesome. They truly love animals, and get to know you and your pet. We now have 2 cats, and my husband and I are truly grateful we have Dr. Lau and his staff to care for them!

Expensive, and the vet’s wife is never pleasant. They do an excellent job with removing ticks and fleas though. Good to use when you’re desperate.

I have nothing but praise for Dr. Lau and his staff. If it was not for Dr. Lau my cat would have died a slow, horrible death. Dr. Lau brought him back from the brink of death and he even made a house call to help me get my cat into the carrier because he was a feral cat. He is just about the only, if not the only, vet who still makes house calls. I’m sure another vet would have euthanized my cat but Dr. Lau saves lives and did not give up hope. I am grateful to Dr. Lau for taking excellent care of my cat and personally calling me for updates. He is a miracle worker. He was also recommended by two other vets.

First of all. If you’re poor, maybe you shouldn’t own a pet if you really care about giving him/​her the best in veterinary care.
Second of all, the reason why this place isn’t as busy as somewhere like Blue Cross is because they take the time and effort to treat your pet like their own and really dig deep to find the problems and to solve them. Therefore taking more time to see each pet therefore having less time to see MANY pets. Duh.
What you’ll end up getting is an experience in true quality incomparable to any other places. (i.e. Blue Cross, VCA, Aina Haina Pet, etc.)
I have been to three vet clinics so far for my dog and this one by far has the highest quality of care I have seen. Dr. Bert is up to date with all types of meds as well as even cancer research. Colorado State is one of the BEST universities to get a veterinary education and that is where he got his.
Yes, this place is expensive but it’s because they take more care than ever to make sure you pet is not in pain. This is something that a lot of other places neglect and assume that since it’s just an animal, it’s okay. If you don’t want more aggressive pain treatments or comfort treatments for your pet, leave. That’s your own pet’s comfort and treatment in jeopardy and it’s your own fault.
If you don’t feel like your animal should be treated just as well as any human client, then take them to cheaper, dirtier places. The blame is on you as the owner to pay the price for treatment and if you can’t afford it, then opt for lesser care. That just shows your own lack of financial responsibility as a pet owner.
All in all, this is the best vet on the island and besides going to this vet, I would rather take my pet to a mainland clinic because all of the other vet clinics on the island just do not have the resources.

This place is great! They as so good with our dogs. Whenever something comes up they are so accomodating to fit us into the busy schedule and they have taken excellent care of all of our dogs. They have even met us on weekends when they are closed for emergencies and offer to come to our house when our dog was too sick to get into the car, my mom is small and couldn’t lift the big dog. I would recommend them to anyone. They are easy to work with and make you feel comfortable and are always looking out for the best interest of our pets.
In terms of costs, it doesn’t seem any different than any other vet. In fact, they are always participating in various humane society programs to offer us discounts for having our dogs fixed or mico-​chipped.
