Hawaii Public Radio

Saturday night I had something happen to us that I have never had happen to me ever. My gf (my best friend) tried to take me to do something nice and as a surprise she wanted to take me to see a pianist at hawaii public radio and when she checked to see if it was kid friendly the website said yes. When we got there we got criticised (pretty much harassed) by FOUR different woman at hawaii public radio. We got looked at like we did not belong there by all the old ladies. I felt discriminated because the moment we got there we got treated like we aren’t supposed to be there because I had my son with me. My one year old, who by the way listens to 88.1 and 89.3. Doesn’t make a peep in the car when I have those radio stations on. One woman who checked us in looked at my son and said «are you bringing your baby in here?», I of course said yes. She then left went inside and then another lady came out, and this really was the lady who upset me more then once. She said «so your bringing your baby inside, just want to let you know we are doing a live recording so please no crying babies, make sure your baby doesn’t cry». There was no indication on the tickets that children could not come or that they were doing a live recording. If that were on the tickets I am sure my gf wouldn’t have taken us there. But of course false advertisement I guess. Anyways that wasn’t even the end of it. A few minutes later the first lady that checked us in said «Are you ALL students?» Again she looks at my son. My gf then says «well i purchased the tickets online with my student ID». Lady walks away confused. Then the second lady comes out AGAIN, looks ay my son and in a subtle bitchy way says «oh how old is he, oh so he goes to school, well where does he go to school». At that point i kind of just rolled my eyes and ignored her. Already as uncomfortable as I was just being there and feeling all these negative energies and bad auras from these people I contemplated on weather or not we should stay or not. These people in no way made me feel like I wanted to be there. After a while I let my son walk around outside then some random lady comes up to me and says «you do know we are recording right». Again looking at my son like he was some kind of criminal for being there. Like seriously how many of you woman have to come to me and say this making me feel EVEN MORE uncomfortable. They finally open the doors we go in and sit down. My son and I go to the bathroom and as we are washing our hands SOME OTHER LADY IN THE BATHROOM says to me «how do you know he’s gona be quiet». Seriously if I weren’t so upset I would’ve said some things to these ladies that they would’ve gotten offended from. But I was just so upset that my poor baby was getting that kind of treatment from a bunch of ADULT/​OLDER woman who apparently think that they are better then he is. Anyways last straw was when that second lady came up to us yet again and said «ok We have been having some complaints from the audience about YOUR BABY, so how about this, how about one person can stay here and the other has to go outside with the baby, and you can both take turns doing so». At that point I had had enough. I said we are just going to leave and I started crying because never IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, have I ever got treated in that way. I felt especially bad for my gf because her surprise got ruined and I felt bad for my son because my baby had gotten treated like that and hes just a baby, he has no idea wat is going on. I wish that these ladies, these workers had handled the situation A LOT better then what they did to us this weekend. That was completely unprofessional and not a way to handle any type of situation. It was down right discriminating. I would expect a lot more from hawaii public radio. I would think that you would want to encourage young children to listen to this kind of music rather then the other stuff they play on the radio. Its sad and I hope those woman there feel bad for the way they made us feel tonight. I will never forget it.

As a long time public radio fan, of course I like their programming. But what makes HPR special to me is their intimate performance space and their member perks. There is not a bad seat in the house. As a member I received an invitation to a talk on sharks and a chance to tour the studio, for starters. It’s a joy for lifelong learners.

I came here for an event, a concert for a cd release party. The sound in the concert hall was so good and it was a nice intimate space. I have driven by this building for many years and listened on the radio before. The venue itself was okay, but the staff that was there was horrible. By the end of the evening of dealing with the staff there, it made me really never ever want to go back to HPR to visit or for another event. They either need to get some new staff or send their current staff to customer service school.

So my story is going to follow the same lines as Emi, although it starts in a different state.
For some odd reason, my mom got me hooked on listening to public radio stations. It started back in San Jose, CA, when she used to drop me off at school and listened to KTEH (
) channel 54 radio. It always had something interesting on. It was quite a relief from those stupid morning shows where they’d do idiotic prank calls and moronic shticks.
When I moved to Portland it was Oregon Public Broadcasting aka OPB (
) in the morning and now in Honolulu, HPR. I guess I was spoiled by the earlier two because much of their radiocast is full of locally themed news and information. HPR is full of national NPR broadcasts (like The Diane Rehm Show, eh… Although I got to see Arie Shapiro sing at a Pink Martini concert here in Honolulu!), which aren’t bad, but I enjoy hearing more about local history and such. One goal is to meet David Malama. Funny that I always listened to him in Oregon on OPB although he’s located here in Hawaii. Hopefully sometime in the future HPR can find the funding to do interesting exposes on topics central Hawaii. Those were always my favorites.

When I was in the 7^th grade my parents put me in private school, and every morning my Dad and I would sit thru morning traffic from Aiea to Town. I had two choices on what we could listen to in the car and my choices were oldies radio or Hawaii Public Radio. My Dad obviously had a sick sense of humor and enjoyed torturing me. I’d split our morning drive time between mostly oldies because I was in love with Herman’s Hermits and the occasional Hawaii Public Radio show. Even though at the time I felt like I was cursed with listening to world news, I can honestly say that my morning drive time was truly an education in its own right. I learned about the world, culture, science and heard the opinions of some might smart folk who I would otherwise had never been exposed to. While my friends listened to the New Kids On The Block and N’ Sync, I listened to stories about real people filled with the purpose and truth that only comes from real life.
In all the years that I’ve lived in Honolulu this was my very first time entering the Hawaii Public Radio studios. It’s located across from Don Quijote and I was invited there to be a guest on the technology talk show ‘Bytemarks Café.’ During my time on the show we talked about Unilocal and geo-​location in mobile technology. I know, you’re completely enthralled by the topic. The Hawaii Public Radio studios are small, but organized, and you can tell the people that work there enjoy their time in such a peaceful place full of intelligent thought. Next time you hear them doing a Hawaii Public Radio drive to fundraise be sure to donate and perhaps you’ll be supporting the morning drive education of another young girl who’s being forced to listen to oldies or Hawaii Public Radio.
