Gee Yung Int’l Martial Arts Dragon & Lion Dance Association

I’ve seen Gee Yung perform at a bunch of community events, graduation parties, weddings, etc. They always provide great entertainment and performances. The dancers are very skilled and acrobatic (and brave!!). I think they’re one of the few lion dance teams in Hawaii that do the pole jumping dance so they’re very talented and always put on a great show! I always get nervous every time I watch them perform the pole jumping dance, but they are very professional so no need to worry, they know what they’re doing! :)

My first encounter with Gee Yung is a few years back during my time competing in the Narcissus Queen Pageant. We had a couple of our contestant classes there and although I was very hesitant to attend (as I’m not the most «in shape» person) the team at Gee Yung made the experience worthwhile. The staff and members were patient, knowledgeable, and very inspiring as you could see their passion for the martial arts and the culture come through during our sessions. A bunch of us girls don’t make for the easiest group to have to teach — but they did a great job in showcasing the art of inner and physical strength as well as the art of the lion dance. The facility here has a nice and clean interior (very well maintained) plus there is AC! The association also teaches varying martial arts classes as well.
I recently got married and reached out to Gee Yung to have them perform a lion dance for our wedding reception. The planning process was smooth and Harlan was very professional and efficient (which is so important during the high stress times of planning a wedding). Although the date of our wedding was very popular, he was very accommodating in finding a slot for us in their schedule.
The day of the wedding reception, the group and the lions were prompt and early. They were ready to perform once their time slot in our formal program came in. Each and every one of our guests thoroughly enjoyed the show that the lions had put on, and it made our reception that much more special. I would highly recommend Harlan and Gee Yung for any event that you may have. I most definitely will call upon them again the next time we have a celebration within our family.

I think Gee Yung are one of the best lion dance organizations out there. They have a wide variety of classes. I first discovered Gee Yung when I ran in the Narcissus Queen Pageant a few years ago. They offered self defense classes to every contestant. They also offered free classes up in until the competition date, which is four months. If you do place on court, classes are free for additional year. I took advantages of Muai Thai classes with a few other contestants. It’s a really great work out.
Even when I ran for the Miss Chinatown Hawaii Pageant we always saw them around. Harlan and Ken are always so friendly and happy to see past contestants. Especially when I saw both of them again at my friend’s weekend last Saturday. Not sure if they were really happy to see me or they remembered the girl who always fell in self defense class. Haha. Overall though, Gee Yung is great!

Recently I hired Gee Yung to perform at my wedding. I was so happy with their performance. Harlan was the contact from Gee Yung that I scheduled the appearance with— he was real professional and very quick to respond to all my questions.
We got married on a busy day — 8÷8÷15 — but Harlan was able to schedule us in for our reception. On the day of, all the members of the association were on time and very nice to work with. My bride and I seem to be falling behind schedule with some last minute changes and the entire group were still very flexible and open to flexing to our needs that night.
While we waited to make our entrance a few members of the team introduced themselves to us which I thought was cool. Growing up my Mom loved taking us to see the lions but I never got to meet the people behind the scenes. Seeing how this team was so kind and friendly made me super impressed. All the young team members were really professional as well.
In my eyes, Gee Yung is the best lion dance company not only in Hawaii but in the world. Very Kind, Friendly and Professional. Our reception was made extra special from their «lion blessings» and all of our guests enjoyed their performance.
Likely to hire them in the future for sure.

Gee Yung and Harlan have always been good to us. They truly dedicate themselves to the art and to those who have included them in their celebrations.
I know that they are always busy with blessings, weddings, parties, etc. but they always make time for those who ask. They are always ready to go at the right time and always put on an amazing lion dance show! The guests at my wedding loved them!
I also know from experience that they have a solid martial arts club deeply rooted in the local culture. They are always willing to support local businesses and clubs. Thank you Harlan and Gee Yung!!!

Corresponding via emails went great, quick and with detailed responses. They were even kind to come back to my event as we weren’t ready for them to perform (guests were still arriving) but boy was it awful when it came to paying after their performance.
I asked (who I assumed to be Harlan, the guy I corresponded with via emails) how much I owed, he said $ 150. Was handing him $ 160 and asked if he had change. He asked how much I was giving, I said $ 160 and he replied, «well you actually owe more» with an annoyed look with his arms crossed over his chest. I asked «how much?» And he replied, «supposed to be $ 200 because disclaimer states $ 50» (this is for the inconvenience of them having to return to my event to perform) and I had no problem paying that extra fee because I understood the situation and said, «okay that’s fine, I can give you $ 200» and he grumpily replies, «no, no. No need already. That’s ok» takes the money and walks away shaking his head before I can even blink, leaving me confused and shocked!
Why not mention that I owe $ 200 in the first place instead of telling me $ 150, then not accepting it when I’m willing to pay what’s due and just leaving annoyed and upset?! Transaction could’ve been handled way more professionally and I was even thinking of emailing and apologizing for the inconvenience with a check for the $ 50 fee on its way to him BUT SCREW THAT! That would’ve been way too nice of me. Not referring anyone I know to them and def not hiring them everrr again!
Bottom line:
⁴⁄₅ stars for performance
⁰⁄₁ stars for professionalism!

Came here for Muay Thai because my bf used to workout here before we moved to Colorado.
The class times are Monday and Wednesday nights for Muay Thai, but due to our crazy work schedule we can only go 2 Mondays out of every 3 weeks and none on Wednesdays.
My first class was not taught by THE Sifu, but definitely a good heart pumping workout! Class started with bootcamp style warm up for about 30 min — jump rope, planks, abs. It’s enough to get you sweaty and reminded me of this saying «your workout is my warm up». After warm up was when the fun kicked in. We spent about an hour or so learning several combos with a partner. Btw did I mention the students there are very friendly? The classroom was big and class size was around 10 people so we all had plenty room to maneuver. The instructor was patient and observant. He made a point to correct everyone’s form and made sure we all understood the purpose of these combos. He allowed us to go twice per person per combo so the second round would make up for all the confusions from the first round. The class ended with punching drills.
Wow that was a great workout as I walked out of Gee Yung drenched in sweat at 9:30pm feeling accomplished. Did I mention I was sore for days after? Can’t wait to go to another class!!!

Just had a 70^th Birthday Bash in Hawaii. Although we reside in the SF Bay Area, the Gee Yung Martial Arts Assn was referred to us by a family friend who lived in Hawaii & who now lives in the Bay Area. Harlan & his troupe helped to make the celebration a BIG success. They were on time & very professional. If anyone asks for a Lion Dance referral, we would gladly pay it forward. WOW! I was blown away by Gee Yung’s amazing Lion Dance performance! What a delight to witness such talent! Heart pumping live music! Delightfully surprising acrobatic feats! Such character and animation! My favorite part was when one of my guests dogs started barking at one of the lions and the lion crouched down growling at it in an attacking stance. Seeing the dog and lion growling at each other was hilarious! Great improv! Their presentation was by far my favorite performance of the night!

There isn’t too many lion dance groups out there, but i had two in mind that i wanted to book for our wedding. In the end — i decided to go with Gee Yung after seeing their performance during Chinese new year. I paid approx 275 for one adult lion, 2 small lions, and a grand finale with a party popper.
I mainly spoke with Harlan, and he assured me that he had everything under control a month before the wedding. I might have panicked a little bit after dealing with Watanabe Florist, so i had to make sure everyone else was ontop of it too. A lot of the communication was through emails, and many of which had a prompt response.
We were very pleased with the outcome — they showed up on time, and everyone enjoyed the lion dance!

A super place to relieve the stresses of everyday life & get a great workout:) Harlan is an awesome teacher!!! Muay Thai classes are always different (re: warm-​ups, drills etc.) so you never get bored! I heart MT;)

We hired them for our wedding. We had a confirmed time on our wedding day, but they showed up early and said that their performance time was 30 min before what we had agreed on. Needless to say, we had to rush all of our guests (couldn’t let them sign in) into the ballroom to accommodate them and it threw off our whole time line for the rest of our reception! For anyone that has planned a wedding, you know how every minute is scheduled.
It was a ton of stress that I didn’t need on my wedding day! We even emailed them to complain after the wedding and we never received an apology or even a reply. Save yourself the stress on your wedding day and look elsewhere for Lion Dancers.

The Dilemma: I was throwing a Chinese New Year party at KA and needed a Chinese lion dance stat!
The Solution: The Gee Yung Lion Dance Association.
I found Gee Yung through several recommendations from Facebook friends (thanks guys!). Harlan, their stealthy leader, was very professional and easy to work with. They arrived exactly on time and helped me make the most of my lion dance experience. He explained the whole process to me and gave me different scenarios of how to introduce them to a room full of eager Unilocalers. I was a little nervous because I really wanted their performance to be a surprise. Who doesn’t like surprises right?
If you saw these kids one might think that this may be a form of child slavery but hey these little kids are doing a lion dance and not selling crack on the streets of Chinatown, so it’s all good! It was so neat how they swapped places and kept that lion tail wagging the entire time. Everything was timed wonderfully from their entrance to the length of their performance to their speedy exit. Keep them wanting more is always a good rule of thumb and I always believe that less is more! Their performance was truly the highlight of the evening’s event and I can’t express how grateful I am that they did such a fantastic job!
If you’re getting married, throwing a Chinese New party or heck, just want to see a Chinese lion wiggle its tail at you call Harlan and he’ll hook you up!

Shaking in my Ma Bo for way too long.
Practicing forms way too many times only to be scolded again for doing it wrong.
Sweating so much I was wringing my socks out…
Making crowds of people smile at our lion dance performances.
Straining my groin from high kick after high kick after high kick…
Only to have Sigung Lee do some crazy pressure point massage to the back of my knee and have my groin pain dissipate.
Sigung and Sifu Lee are amazing men whom I respect very much.

There are only a few lion dance organizations in the Honolulu area and I decided to go with Gee Yung because they got back to me the same day I e-​mailed them (I don’t think I heard from the other group I contacted). For $ 225, I got one adult lion and two baby lions for my wedding. They arrived on time and performed for about 20 minutes. Our guests really enjoyed the performance. All communication was handled over e-​mail. The person I corresponded with (Harlan) was always prompt in answering my questions.
