It’s been about seven weeks since I had my hair cut and color done with Donna Tokumoto and I’ve only had good hair days since.
I finally found a great stylist. She warned me that once she cut my hair, I may only have to brush it to get ready for a day out. Well she’s right!
My flat iron and blow dryer are lazily resting most of the week and my hair brush takes care of my styling needs.
My hair color is amazing, too! I have no regrets and look forward to my next visit with Donna soon!

Donna is amazing, and is a master at her craft! I came to her with long hair, and showed her pics of shorter styles that I really wanted. (I don’t have a regular stylist, so it’s always a little nerve racking going to someone new.) Because I was going so extreme, she suggested to cut at shoulder length first. Just by that suggestion I trusted her and didn’t feel worried at all. Shoulder length came out nice, but we both knew it wasn’t quite there yet. So went a bit shorter, and bam! She nailed it! Definitely going to schedule for color.
Five stars are well deserved! Make an appointment!

This updated review is much overdo… my first review was in 2011. Fast forward 4 years and many a hair-​transformations later, Donna’s GENIUS never ceases to amaze me.
I could go on and on about Donna’s genius. But, my all time FAVORITE thing about Donna’s hair and dye jobs is that she tailors it to what you need — your hair type and your lifestyle (maintenance, styling, etc). Donna knows that I’m on the low end of the spectrum — so, she does my hair in a way that it grows out just as nice and doesn’t make me look like a Hot mess. How she does it? I don’t know. It’s MAGIC.
Her shop is right on Bethel — up the road from JJs and Fighting Eel. When you walk right it, it’s like you are getting your hair done at that super cool and posh Aunty’s house. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch her dog, Puppy. That’s right. Her dogs name is Puppy. =)

Donna is an absolutely amazing colorist and I love my haircut as well! She does a great job of tailoring each client’s specific wants and needs with personal and very specific consultations, a special kind of attention you might otherwise not receive at other salons. She completely transformed my virgin hair with beautiful tortoiseshell coloring and I’ve already recommended her to all of my friends. Bring in picture examples of what you want and you will be pleasantly surprised, I know the way my hair turned out surpassed expectations!

Donna is Da Bomb! Love my new color & cut, it is as good as it gets. I love the way Donna knows her hair and her passion for her craft, as truly she is an artist. Thanks for my new hair makeover, as I surely needed some help. I am happy I found the right person. I appreciate your telling it like it is in regards to covering up the grays. It was like talking to an old friend seeing Donna again. I had not been in several years, but remembered her fine work and looked her up. The texting of appointment was a big help too when your on the go.

Like all of you fellow ladies can agree, finding a hairstylist that understands what you want and can deliver can be quite difficult. I read all the amazing reviews about Donna so I decided I would give her a try.
Let me say she is amazing! I came in with partial highlights and asked Donna if she could give me a blonde ombré. Because some of my hair was previously treated, this was certainly going to be a challenge. Donna had to do two different sessions because of all the work. She was so meticulous, patient, friendly, etc. I only have good things to say about her. I am so so so happy with her work and will definitely make her my new stylist. She is simply amazing and she works with you in delivering what you want. The best part is that my hair is now «her’s» so the next time I go in, she will know what’s best and how to color it. I can’t wait to try new things with Donna, maybe even add in some pink tips!

I found Donna on Unilocal… she is within walking distance to where I live, I saw all of her good reviews, and her little shop is cute and classy! When I contacted her, she was able to get me in that same weekend! I am a local girl who was living on the mainland for many years and just recently moved back. I have been looking for a good colorist located near me for over 2 years! Finding a good colorist for my black curly hair has not been easy for me since I moved back for some reason! I’ve always loved enhancing my hair with red highlights but I was going to local salons that did not meet 100% of my satisfaction. UNTIL NOW! YAY DONNA! I love my highlights AND she’s good fun! Such a fun person to talk to, she has an awesome personality and her prices are reasonable AND she’s located within walking distance of where I live… she’s so conveniently located right in downtown! I will definitely be going back to Donna, she is absolutely amazing!

Second attempt at posting this review. At the salon today to continue my 2015 hair color transformation. Donna Tokumoto has been my hair stylist for the last 16 years. Yep, I’m pretty loyal when I find the right person. What keeps me coming back 8 – 10 times a year is that Donna never seems to get bored with doing my hair. She always listens fully to me and then, using her professional expertise, guides us through a collaboration that inevitably is wildly successful. She is willing to experiment with my ideas, but never to the point of damage or just for the money. In fact, she will sometimes draw the line and say ‘no, it’s not for you, you will be unhappy’. That’s honest and I appreciate it. Oh, and did I say that her color blending is so good that many people think my hair has not been colored at all. That’s tops in my books.

Donna did an amazing job on my highlights and also styling for a special day! When my hair was first highlighted, it was the exact color from the photo that I showed her but it was a little light for me. So the next day, she was sweet and toned it for me to take it down a shade. The following week, Donna styled my hair and it not only stayed up the whole day and evening, it was beautiful. She knew exactly what I wanted and made it look even better. I since moved but wish I could go back to Donna for all of my regular hair appointments.

Minh is the only human I’ll trust with my hair anymore. I’ve been going to him since early 2010 and never seen anyone else since I moved here. He’s friendly and listens to what I need with my hairstyle. I believe he specializes in men’s haircuts, so that means he has attention to detail. His rates are extremely reasonable, especially for the quality of the cut. And he knows my hair so well that he stops me from making bad decisions with my length and layers. Give him a try and save some money with the pricier cuts!

I am picky. Donna makes me happy. Biggest thing im looking for in a hairstylist? Someone that listens and then produces what I want or better. Bonus is I live spontaneously & on the fly so it helps that she fits me in when she can– we text, we FB, etc.

Donna was amazing!
I had been looking for a new stylist and the reviews on Unilocal that I read for Donna at Fresh Image 808 led me to give her a try. She got me in the same day I asked (extra bonus, she responded immediately to the email I sent out rather than calling)!
I went with only a little idea of what I wanted to do with my hair. It had been about shoulder length. I explained to Donna my issues with my hair and the general idea I had of what I wanted. I told her she had free reign to cut as much hair as she thought was good for me. She did just that! She immediately had a style that was good for my hair and face type.
She was so meticulous while cutting and very detail oriented. She was super friendly and it felt like I had been going to her for years. Once she was finished I knew I would never go anywhere else. This is probably the best hair cut I have ever had! She truly is great! If you need a good cut… go see Donna!

Donna is a professional in her trade. She keeps up with the latest trends in style and color. I know I can count on her to keep my style current. She does a great job with color! I know that if I want something different or specific, she is able to make it happen! Very satisfied!

Donna is the bomb! Not only does she listen to what you want from a cut or color but she also gives incredible recommendations for the ladies wanting something new and fresh.
I’ve been going to her for years now, and always walk out of the salon feeling like a new woman!

I am not one for long reviews, so mine will be shorter than most. Donna has been cutting my hair for almost 20 years. I have followed her to 5 locations. Her cuts are precise and current, her coloring is superb. Highly recommended. ‘Nuff said.

Donna is very professional and knowledgeable. She will spend time to listen and consult with you. You do not feel rushed when you are there, you know she takes her work seriously and cares about you. Also very friendly and I love talking to her. You will feel great and anew when you walk out the door. I usually park in the inexpensive municipal lot with the entrance right pass Nuuanu on Beretania.

Customer Service is all I have to say on this one. It would have remained at 4 star’s, but they didn’t have their shit together. I hope this was just an off week.
Where do i begin? Attempted to schedule an appointment for 1 week, leaving messages. There were no message on the voicemail regarding salon being closed or return of stylist’s. Isn’t that standard practice? That alone would have kept this salon at 4 star’s regardless of what the shit hole looks like. I make my appointment, get there and they ask me if i made and appointment. WTF?! Are you F***ing with me? They took me in, with no word said during the whole time (30 minutes). Of course I don’t lower my standards regardless. I thanked them for taking me in, tipped my usual, and got the F*** out. As I was walking out, I told myself that I better start looking for a new barber. Not sure if I will give another try.
Atmosphere:
Salon make me feel like I’m in the 80’s. It wouldn’t matter if their customer service was on target.
Price:
Cost of haircut has gone up, but it was bound to happen sometime. Did I mention customer service sucks?
Parking:
Metered parking, get there a little early if you decide to use this sub-​standard salon. There’s a parking garage and a pay parking lot across the street.
