Check ebay first. I had a generator rebuilt by CPR about five years ago. It was on my classic car, so only had 600 miles of use when sparks began to shoot out of the rear. I biked down 7 miles to CPR and they told me it would need a total rebuild for $ 250, which turns out to be the standard charge. That actually is a clever strategy, but when a couple of brushes only need to be replaced, it feels bad from the customer point of view.
I asked the owner if I could just have my core back since they were the rebuilders and I had biked so far to get there. She replied that I should pay the bill that I incurred. The man at the counter said that they would keep my generator.
I understand that it is a business, and if this had been a generator from any other re-​builder than themselves, I would think that a happy customer would be more value than the bench test fee, particularly in the age of online reviews.
So, I went on ebay and just installed a rebuild from a 100% feedback manufacturer on the mainland… $ 60 including shipping, no core charge. Got to me in two days, free shipping. Installed and works properly. Let’s see if it beats the CPR 600 mile endurance challenge!

Verrrry happy with my alternator. They did a GREAT job. Dropped it off yesterday said it be ready in 4 – 5 days… more so it was ready today… and top it all, its low price! Chee heee… Awesome Pawsome! What a great find. The starter on my wife’s CRV went out and it was over $ 500 at the dealer for an OEM one. Orielly’s wanted $ 259 and I finally ended up getting a rebuild one Amazon for $ 159. The Amazon starter lasted 3 days and locked up. I remembered seeing this place as I drive into Honolulu so I thought I would give them a call. The person who answered the phone was very nice and told me it would be $ 147 to rebuild my starter and they could do it in 2 hrs. I dropped it off at lunch and picked it up after work. It was all rebuilt and they even cleaned & painted the outside. I got a military discount and a lifetime warranty. I went home and installed it and it works like a champ. Not sure how long it will last, but I am happy with everything so far.

I want to start off by saying that I’m sorry for neglecting you, the smart reader. To make it up to you, I have excellent information for you regarding car starters and alternators including the million dollar question, so you have to stick around for that. Also, I find this review fitting and meaningful for Memorial Day because Central Pacific Rebuilders has ties to the military and honor military personnel with a discount.
What is a starter and an alternator, you ask. Good question. Well, a starter is what gets your engine going when you turn your key to start. An alternator powers your car’s electrical system once the engine is running.
So you see why these parts are essential to your car. That’s why Central Pacific Rebuilders or CPR is in the starter and alternator business, particularly rebuilt starters and alternators but they sell new ones too.
What’s rebuilt mean? Another good question, your questioning is impeccable. It’s not the same as re-​manufactured (which is all new interior parts). Rebuilt means only the worn out interior parts of the starter or alternator are removed and replaced. In re-​manufactured, all interior parts are removed and replaced with new parts.
How much are the rebuilt starters and alternators? They cost less than re-​manufactured ones. Here are some starter prices I researched for you:
Napa’s re-​manufactured starter: $ 214+100 core deposit with a 3 year warranty
O’Reilly’s re-​manufactured starter: $ 144+$ 90 core deposit with a lifetime warranty
Central Pacific Rebuilders rebuilt starter: $ 129+$ 35 core deposit with a lifetime warranty
As far as CPR goes, there policy is you have 7 days to return your core (your broken/​old starter) to get your full core deposit back. The core deposit was $ 35 for me. Also, you can return as long as the part hasn’t been installed, but they charge a 20% restocking fee and no returns after 5 days. Finally, the customer service was spot on and friendly.
Now for the million dollar question: Are Central Pacific Rebuilder’s starters and alternators reliable? Honestly, I can’t answer that because I just got the starter, but I will update this review at a later date for you.
