Aloha Scroggin Violins

We found Mr. David Scroggin about 5 years ago after another teacher had completely broken down my then 12 year old son to where he could not play even one song though he had previously memorized about 25. He was extremely fair with his rates and even charged us less than we expected.
David was kind and really cared about my son as we began weekly music lessons to rekindle to smoldering flame that was my son’s music passion.
Over the course of the years we were able to upgrade instruments and took advantage of David’s craftsmanship and skill many times, He was so thoughtful to actually take the time to tune my son’s instruments to his very soul with a tap of the sound post here and a tweak there. David’s expertise was never lost on my son. He absorbed it all.
His skill on the violin increased rapidly until one day he decided he would rather play the cello. David was determined to help us get a quality used cello for the lowest price possible. After a couple of months he had found just the right cello and has been teaching my son cello ever since.
His inspiration and innovative teaching techniques helped my son to branch out into composing where he has flourished and is presently on track to attend one of the finest music conservatories in the country.
We owe David a huge debt of gratitude

I visited David Scroggin a few years ago for a small repair. He overcharged me for the same repair that I could get elsewhere for about $ 100 less. On top of that, he told me that my violin was unusable and cheaply made. He didn’t realize that the person who made my violin has been consistently winning medals at VSA competitions.
He offered to get my violin back into playing order for about $ 2,000. He proceeded to show me one of his violins which was selling for closer to $ 90,000. I tried it briefly and it was a pretty nice instrument but not worth 90k. When I told him that I was on a limited budget he offered to buy my violin from me. Ironically, he said he’d buy it for a much higher price than I paid for it. Even more ironically, he was inquiring whether or not he could buy the violin he was just claiming to be low-​quality.
Let it also be known that I never once asked him for his opinion on my violin nor did I ever indicate that I was interested in any purchases. My visit to his shop was a simple repair. Looks like I got more than I bargained for.
My regret is that he uses the word «Aloha» in his company name. If anything, the shop is «Hewa». I won’t be back for any repair from this guy. Do yourself a favor and check out one of the two other violin shops within walking distance. You’ll save yourself a lot of money and avoid an hour long ego-​driven lecture.
