This location is closed — gotta go to the one on Fort Street Mall. Actually all of the eateries in this place closed. Supposedly a Buddhist church is going to move in. My theory is that they probably own the building, otherwise it would have costed $$$ to buyout all of these popular places.

«Ahi Veggie» is a great place to go when you’re in a hurry and are craving some sushi-style fish. I find myself going here for lunch 3 days out of the week when I’m at work. The spicy ahi and spicy salmon are my favorites. The fish is cut very finely, so if you are a fan of chunky spicy ahi, like at Genki sushi, you might be turned off by the smooth consistency. I like both. The various bowls come with salted choy sum, picked ginger, and a choice of steamed rice, brown rice, or sushi rice. A bowl of miso soup comes with most orders and there’s an option to upgrade to a combo that includes salad with a peanut-based home-made dressing. Food– 4 stars. There’s one word to describe the service here – efficient! Almost everything is set up, ready to make your order before you get there. You can literally be in and out in less than 2 minutes if you get there before 12, but even after 12, you’ll wait no longer than 5 minutes. The cashiers are friendly and polite, always smiling. The eating space is pretty cramped. I would recommend getting your food to go. Prices range between $ 6.50 and 8.50 for bowls.

Dum dum dum… the repeater eater strikes again!!! Sometimes I’m amazed at how boring I can be when it comes to food. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I get the same exact thing every time I go to Ahi & Vegetable for lunch: the ahi bowl with brown rice. They’ve got so many yummy looking things on their menu, but this is just so reliably GOOD and totally satisfying… not to mention, super healthy! The ahi bowl has two scoops of rice, a scoop of their spicy tuna mix, a little pile of steamed greens and some fresh ginger. It’s served with a cup of miso soup which makes for a pretty awesome lunch for under 10 bucks! If you want to eat there, you can snag a spot at one of the few tables but I always prefer to take my food back to the rooftop terrace at my work and eat in the sunshine. The staff at Ahi & Vegetable is super friendly, and you’re in and out in just a few minutes. I only wish they would serve the to-go items in environmentally friendly packaging rather than Styrofoam!

One of two downtown locations, «Ahi Bowl»(as I affectionately call it) is one of my favorite lunch spots. They serve the freshest fish — purchased every day from the local fish auction — and are a great value for lunch. The hands down favorite — mine included — is the spicy ahi bowl. I always ask for«extra spicy» and the wonderful, friendly staff are all too happy to slather my ahi with more spicy mayo. Yum! Their unagi is delectable too, buttery and rich and melts in your mouth. Bowls come with your choice of rice(white, brown, sushi rice) and your choice of fish(spicy ahi, spicy salmon, poke, unagi, natto if you are into it, etc.) and miso soup. You can swap the soup out for a small side salad at no charge if you ask, and the salad comes with their delicious sesame/peanut dressing and is some of the freshest greens I have ever had, every time! You can upgrade to a set which includes miso soup and a salad, or get your sushi on a large bed of greens if you don’t want the rice. They also have nigiri and combo platters. My hot tip is to make your bowl a combo; for just $ 1 more you can add a second sushi selection to your lunch. Spicy Ahi and Unagi oh my!

Because of «budget cutbacks» I haven’t been able to get my usual addiction for lunch for a few months. Today, I didn’t have any home made lunch, so I decided to head over to Ahi & Veg II and get me some spicy ahi bowl! They’ve changed their spicy ahi recipe in the last couple of months. It is even better than before! I had forgotten how good their spicy ahi bowl was! Perfect blend of spicy and creamy, and the ahi is chopped to perfection, not too big of chunks, perfect blend of scraped and cubeb ahi! I will miss this meal more everyday now…

When I’m in the mood for something tasty and«healthy», Ahi & Vegetable is one of my favorite lunch time options here in Downtown Honolulu. When you enter into either of their locations(Fort St. or Alakea St.), often times you will see a line of hungry people. The wait is purely dependent on how early or late you go within the typical lunch time period; however, the staff is pretty efficient and gets your food ready pretty quickly. The food here really hits the spot if you’re craving Japanese influenced food, especially if you’re craving spicy ahi, unagi, ikura, or teriyaki beef/chicken. You can either order a salad under the«Vegetable» menu or the various meals under the«Bowl» menu. Prices range from $ 6.00(Tanuki Udon) to $ 11.00(Ikura & Spicy Ahi Combo Set). Prices may seem a bit steep for a quick lunch; however, what do you expect for some pretty good fish? An added plus is that they don’t include any MSG in their food. When I come here, my typical choice is a spicy ahi and teriyaki chicken combo that is served with a miso soup($ 8.50); however, today I wanted to try the spicy salmon. The spicy salmon was pretty good; however, the texture of the spicy ahi is much better. Ultimately, I think two mounds of spicy fish in a bowl was overkill. Regardless, my food experience here has always been a great and tasty one. I believe there was a point when I ate here everyday for 2 weeks. So, if you are already a frequent patron of this establishment, you know how delicious the food is here. If you’re a newbie and curious, I suggest you definitely try this place out, especially the spicy ahi bowl. Don’t be surprised if you get hooked.

I was supposed to have a lunch in downtown today, but it got cancelled very last minute. After I couldn’t find another lunch date, I decided to visit Ahi & Vegetable on Alakea to satisfy my craving. Since I don’t work in downtown anymore, I occasionally miss a lot of the small hole in the wall restaurants. I had spicy salmon and ahi poke combo. The salmon is a little different. Before they used to use salmon sashimi, however, now the use the meat that they scrap off the bones, similar to their spicy ahi. The thing about salmon when done this way is it creates a more fishy, oily taste and texture. I like my fish A LOT, so I don’t mind the different taste. The ahi poke is same as I remember, decent size chunks of fish coated with a very tasty shoyu base sauce. I also enjoy the miso soup that it comes with. It’s a good appetizer before you get into the poke bowl. Next time I have a craving and my lunch plans falls through, who’s coming with me?
