Specialties

Big Island Grown is an exciting and trendy new shop in downtown Honokaa. This love-child of Kenneth and Michelle Barthel is located right next door to Big Island Glass Gallery and offers kama’aina and visitors an enticing choice of the wonderful goods that are made and grown locally. «We are really excited about the variety and quality of the products that we were able to find being crafted by Big Island hands.» says Ken. These products consist of a diverse yet pleasing mix of hand-made jewelry, artworks, hamakua grown coffee, teas, and gourmet snacks, as well as locally produced clothing, hair and body care products.

History

Established in 2012.

Big Island Grown opened its doors in early October, 2012 and its owners are bringing in an ever-expanding array of merchandise that is manufactured right here on the Big Island. «The local support has been amazing», says Michelle, «people really get excited when they learn everything in our shop was made locally. The quality and beauty of the goods that are produced here is truly amazing and the people who produce them are some of the most delightful I have ever known.»

Business Owner

Kenneth Barthel was raised right here on the Big Island of Hawai’i. He attended both Honoka’a and Pa’auilo Elementary Schools before graduating High School at Parker in Waimea. Kenneth then went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Hawaii Pacific University. While travelling abroad, Kenneth met Michelle, a Maui girl, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Michelle was raised upcountry on Maui and has resided here on the Big Island since 2003. They now have two lovely little keiki (Elise, age 8 and Ethan, age 5) and live just mauka of Honoka’a, in Ahualoa.
