Specialties

Growers of unique perennial plants for the cutting edge gardener, Cochato Nursery specializes in shade plants and wildflowers, dwarf and unusual species for all gardens.

They grow and sell over four hundred varieties of hosta plants in addition to ferns, bog plants, alpines, rock garden plants, unique trees and shrubs, vines, and peonies.

You can find plants that will work in any given growing condition whether it is dry, moist, shade, sunny, sloped, hollow, rocky or loamy.

History

Established in 1990.

What is now home to Cochato Nursery was originally inhabited by the Cochato and Ponkapoag tribes, who called the land Cochaticquom. The Cochato River runs through Broad Meadows to South Braintree and the surrounding area.

For the past two decades Owners Charles Franklin Doughty III and Sue Ellen DuBrava have transformed this property into an elegant Nursery and Display Garden; full of unique and delightful plants.

The Nursery and Display Garden are constantly evolving, as new features are added every year.

Business Owner

As avid gardeners themselves, Charles Franklin Doughty III and Sue Ellen DuBrava want to share their seventy-some years of collective experience with other garden and plant enthusiasts. The exhilaration they experience when designing and planting with plant material that will thrive in each customer’s specific growing conditions and the delight they get watching these plants grow over the years is addictive.

This is why they love what they do. They want everyone that gets plants from Cochato to be just as happy, successful, satisfied and of course return!

For co-owner Charles Franklin Doughty III, horticulture and garden design has been his love since he was a child, digging plants out of the woods and planting them in his yard. His formal studies include a degree in horticulture from UMass Amherst.

He went on to manage a garden center until he started his own Landscape and Design Company. In 1990 he purchased an old farmhouse on four acres in Holbrook, MA and started growing plants
