Glenlaurel Inn & Cottages

I surprised my girlfriend with a weekend away for her birthday. From the moment I called to make reservations, to the awesome 7 course dinner, and the breakfast, everybody was accommodating and professional. We loved all the personal notes found in our roomy, comfortable and beautiful (the view off the patio was fantastic) MacLeod croft as well. Highly recommend, we’ll be back!

My wife and I just had an incredible weddingmoon at Glen Laurel. We absolutely loved it and the tranquility of the setting. The staff was great and cleared off different areas for us outside for photos for our wedding. The food was great and we will be returning again next year in a different season. If you are looking for a great quiet get away and unplug from everything, this is the place to go.

Our first time here and we will definitely be back. Everyone is so nice and helpful and happy. We’re staying in the main house and it’s wonderful. So cozy and relaxing. No cable which I love but the tv does play DVDs that you can get from the lobby for free to watch. Great hiking trails close by and antique malls not too far away. This is the best place to connect with your loved one and to get away from the stress of regular life. I can’t wait to come back!

I would have loved to stay but I didn’t get the option. We called to see if they would let us stay one night because there was an opening for Friday but not sat or sun. The response was «I could let you stay but then I’d have to get up early to clean». How rude. I won’t ever consider them again. Go to lazy lane or old mans cave chalets where the customer service is above expectations

Our first stay at Glenlaurel and may return. We loved the quiet, peaceful atmosphere and grounds. We called for a late check in on Friday and everything was perfect upon our arrival (including the soft music playing). We ate the 7 course dinner Saturday evening and it was very good, a nice variety of flavors (favorite part was the crème brûlée). The pub social hour was nice, but $ 10 for a drink seemed a bit steep.
Sunday morning breakfast was fantastic! First time trying gooseberries! We walked the grounds, down to the gorge and it was a great hike. Housekeeping did a nice job, but didn’t empty our full garbage can at all.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stayed, but it is a bit pricey. Next trip we would like to try the cottages or croft.

My wife surprised me with an anniversary getaway weekend at Glenlaurel. I didn’t know where we were going until we got there.
It was a Sunday, the grounds looked beautiful even with the after-​winter dead trees look. The room was cozy and looked very clean.
After a couple of hours settling in, we went for the 6 course dinner which tasted good but nothing outta this world and certainly not worth $ 165!
The second surprise of the night was when we went back to the room after dinner and 10 minutes in my wife rushes to the bathroom. And then again 5 minutes later. She said there was something wrong with the food but I didn’t think much of it. By 1am I was the one puking my brains out hugging the toilet.
I was ready to leave by morning but my wife convinced me to stay for the time we reserved the room. We went out to eat every time because we refused to consume anything there.
I talked to the girl at the front desk about the happening and she was gonna «check it out» and pass it along the inn supervisor. We never heard a word or a call from anyone the whole time we stayed there.
To sum up, it’s getting 1 star for its questionable food and very poor customer service. Never going back.

The six course meal was portioned ideally. We started with a salmon appetizer embedded within a light pastry. (Sorry, I’ve forgotten the proper name given on the menu). Next was a salad with berries and walnuts seasoned with a mild balsamic vinegar. We followed this with a lentil and ham soup with diced cubes of carrots, celery, ham, and some type of bean blended into the sauce itself. A portion of handmade peach sorbet cleared the palette for the main course. Some had pork tenderloins, others had chicken. We decided on the nicely cooked rack of lamb. The dessert was a pumpkin «brownie» — half way between a cake and a pie.
Overall, a very enjoyable dinner. The hour of social at the bar before dinner is an option.

Had a wonderfully stay here last night. The grounds were beautiful — nice paths throughout the property, beautiful gorge, frozen waterfalls, wildlife. Stayed in the Wallace cottage — very romantic: two fireplaces, secluded hot tub on the deck, amazing view and the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in! Thoroughly enjoyed the 7 course dinner in the Manor House — duck confit, crab cake with frizzled onions, cauliflower and white cheddar soup, mixed greens with pears, walnuts and blue cheese, sorbet, rack of lamb with gratin potatoes and haricots verts, and finally a delicious toffee nut torte. Everything prepared to perfection and breakfast the next morning was more of the same — delicious Scottish porridge, smoked salmon eggs benedict, berry crepes. The innkeeper and staff were very professional yet still friendly — seem to enjoy working here. We will definitely return!

Arrived 3:10 Sunday, December 30, 2012. Directions & emails great. At check-​in informed room, McKenzie, wasn’t ready & told to join reception in manor house & we’d be told when room was ready. After an hour (check-​in is 3:30) room still not ready. Reception included cookies, cookies, & cordials. Nice but too many sweets. Nuts better addition. After 1 hour 30 minutes told room’s ready. Stairs had spills on walls. At room 1^st thing noticed could hear everything being said below us. Place was full no place to move. Next darkness of room. Light by closet burned out. Reported it but no one came til next day & told entire light needed replaced & must talk w/​supervisor but lights been breaking recently & all had to be replaced. If they knew this why didn’t they replace them all instead of waiting for someone to complain? Never fixed light while there. Had time before dinner & went to sit on couch & found peanuts, popcorn & gooey substance on it. I’d to clean before I’d sit. Told cleaning staff & took stuff away & said nothing. Noticed end table was dirty. It’d greasy film on it. Bed: plastic shower curtain like cover under sheets & sweated all night. Biggest problem w/​room: able to hear everyone below. Bathroom nice: had 2 person whirlpool & shower. Whirlpool difficult to get out of but had grab bar. Shower older (like 60s) & needs remodeled. 5 windows looked great but ICE COLD. Even w/​curtains shut you’d feel cold. Had fireplace & kept running for warmth. Bathroom: heater in ceiling-​fan noisy as was toilet exhaust fan. Both need replaced. Toilet paper & tissues cheap brand. Can’t believe they’re using cheap items in place that’s supposed to be elegant.
Dinner-​hors d’oeuvres;cheese, crackers, shrimp, salmon, vegetables, nacho chips, hot & cold ones including beef strips. Leftover sweets available-​Guinness cupcake w/​Baileys icing yummy & gave recipe nice. Not told wasn’t a true dinner. Evening included casino program & had funny money for games. 9:00 cashed for prize tickets. Every couple won prize. Fun. Received bag of fruit & dessert spreads w/​box of crackers. Another couple, won six course dinner on next visit. Had to give to family member cause from out of state. Ended evening, back in room, again hear noise below, couldn’t go to bed till quiet.
At breakfast. noticed food on wall where sitting, maybe from someone who’d just left. Breakfast good & included waffles w/​ham or omelet w/​peppers & onions. I asked for eggs. Said no problem & brought 2 eggs w/​ham. We’re pleased w/​food but service lacking. Noticed other couples, came after us, offered coffee & juice quickly, we sat waiting. Took 5 minutes finally come others arriving & getting services. Next morning food still on wall & service still lacking. Breakfast; Scottish Eggs wrapped in sausage-​yummy. Oatmeal served w/​both breakfasts’ was cold. Scone type bread burnt on bottom.
Back to room. Asked if wanted room cleaned & said yes. Light above closet out, tried to use flashlight, needed new batteries, they replaced them. Great, able to see in closet. Stayed in room till New Year’s Eve event started. Black tie event. Escorted to pub; light appetizers, bagpipes called to dinner. Our table on lower level some upstairs. Every couple sat at own table for 7 course dinner. Everything fantastic. Started w/​pork & quail egg, turtle soup, bass. Next chocolate raspberry sorbet, elk. roasted quail-​phenomenal. Last sticky toffee bread. Again, not served well as others. Watched as others asked if wanted a drink. Had to flag down server to ask for drinks & table had no bread. After dinner, celebration of Hogmanay. Nice followed by bon fire & sparklers. Led to manor house by bagpiper & toasted New Year w/​champagne. Evening done but again wait till quiet before sleep. Problem w/​service many guests there multiple times & staff leaned to them & left newbies out.
Wanted to get out of place. Wanted quiet place w/​little bit of entertainment for New Year’s but didn’t want isolated & this happened. Repeaters stayed together while newbies left alone. Cost: 2 night event over $ 1,200.00. Place not worth money, it was dirty & service lacking. It’s on «Select Registry» list & built/​opened in 1994 but found nothing «select» about place to make us want to return.

The food was terrible. Seriously not worth the money unless you are staying there and have to eat the food. Rubber shrimp, greasy vegetables and a dry slab of pheasant covered in gouda sauce? Wouldn’t do it again. (Servers were very nice and hardworking.)

Enchanting. This romantic get away spot is just a wonderful way to reconnect with a loved one. They have wonderful yoga instruction and a chef that cooks both breakfast and a 6 course dinner for you.
It is a dry county; but, you can bring your own wine or alcoholic beverages with you. Mainly, it is a wonderful way to get a way and reconnect with nature and your best friend.

Let me start by saying, I really, really wanted to love this place… and I did love many things. Unfortunately, the food was not one of them.
We went for the Saturday night seven course meal. The inn was a bit difficult to find as it was dark and none of the signs are lit. Glenlaurel is a Scottish style inn and when we pulled in the grounds were lovely and a bagpiper was playing by the entrance. The grounds and inn were lovely.
Dinner started fine and the experience as a whole was good. The menu however lacked creativity and was very heavy on cheese. Several of my courses were delivered barely warm. The food was very early 80’s hotel banquet fare. It was certainly edible, just not what I was expecting.
I think if I were to go again, I would not go on a weekend but rather a weekday. Perhaps nights when the dining rooms aren’t filled to capacity, the kitchen feels free to get more creative and not just phone it in.

When we’re looking for somewhere to just get away from it all for a few days, Glenlaurel is definitely my first choice.
A Scottish-​themed bed and breakfast well located in the Hocking Hills, Glenlaurel is just a wonderful place to escape, and the experience is geared toward a romantic retreat for couples. As a part of this atmosphere though, children under 16 and pets are not allowed. If you’re looking for a place for the whole family to stay in the Hills, look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for a place to get AWAY from the kids (your own or just kids in general), this is definitely the place.
The lodgings are great — from the smaller, less expensive rooms and suites, to the cozy crofts, to the larger cottages, each has it’s own slightly different theme (all named after a Scottish family line). When first entering your room, you’ll find things have been prepared for your check-​in, including leaving a CD player on loop with some great relaxing celtic music to set the mood right away.
Dinners at Glenlaurel are expensive, but lavish. 5 course meals most nights, with 7 course meals on Saturdays. Given the small staff, the menu is mostly set, but vegetarian options are available, and a chicken dish alternative is usually offered as well. The breakfasts aren’t quite as lavish, but are still well prepared and very good.
If you want to get out, but don’t want to drive off the grounds, Glenlaurel has it’s own trail through the hills, the Camusfearna Gorge. A short but scenic trail which includes a couple well-​placed benches to stop and rest out in the woods. And if you DO want to drive, Glenlaurel is close by all the more popular trails in the area, including Old Mans Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, etc.
