Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts

Have you guys had those daydreams where you beat up a gang of thugs and emerge the hero/heroine?Well, I have! Blame it on an overdose of Bollywood action/​Jackie Chan movies while growing up!
Of course, the teeny tiny fact that I have absolutely no training whatsoever (am pretty sure wrestling matches with big bro while growing up don’t count) to do that has been casually forgotten. till now! Even though I can throw a mean punch, I have never really taken time to search for a martial arts/​Kickboxing class until I came across one on Groupon for Tiger Schulmann.
Fast forward a month and I am confident that this is one of the best decisions I have made in the recent past. The classes here are amazing! The first class gives you an idea about how out-​of-​shape you are. Believe me, you will be surprised to know how little you can push your body (if you are not used to working out).No worries, within a couple of weeks you would have built up great stamina and will be feeling great about yourself. Of course, I am still a long way away from super fit but now atleast I know that it is a possibility.
The instructors (senseis) who I have worked with, both Louis and Andrew know their stuff and make sure that you give every class your best shot. They will push you but in no way be overbearing towards you. The atmosphere is really friendly and relaxed. I love the fact that the instructors know every single person’s name (even some hard-​to-​pronounce ones like mine) and make you feel welcome there.
The beginner classes I have been attending are kickass and follow a rigorous routine by the end of which you would wanna applaud yourself. If you feel a little down on any day, the instructors are always around to motivate you.
The prices are a little high but the fact that it is in Hoboken (very accessible) and you really do get your money’s worth make up for that!(Of course I still do wish the prices were lower!).I think they have a free trial for one class for people to check out if Kickboxing is their thing. Overall, as you can tell, I am super excited and happy about my classes!

The workouts are intense, the sensei is dedicated and very motivational (Louis gaudinot)
It’s a bit pricey compared to Cko gyms and other gym memberships, but then again this is no ordinary gym, and it’s absolutely worth every penny!
There’s basic kickboxing, advanced. Kickboxing classes, grappling and so much more. There’s also a ranking system, where you receive belts, and if you’re dedicated enough and go all the wayyy can become a black belt.
I highly recommend this place to serious athletic aficionados, as well as people looking to make a change in their life and get ultimately fit, this is the place right here!

If you’re looking to shed weight and learn some real practical stuff (fighting/​self defense) look no further if you’re in the vicinity. Hoboken TSK led by UFC fighter Louis Gaudinot is a «diamond in the rough» in MMA training.
With NYC right across the Hudson River filled with its extensive array of fighting schools, HoBoken TSK flies under the radar at the beginning of Hoboken. As a result, classes are small and much individual attention is given to help you develop and actually get better in whatever your goal is (lose weight/​stay in shape/​or become a solid efficient fighter).
I speak from experience as I’ve been in the school 6 mos now and have dropped over 40lbs since I started. I joined the gym for its variety of styles (I.e. Muay Thai kickboxing, grappling and core training classes). The standard gym routine for me got mundane and needed something different. Each hour class, Sensei Gaudinot pushes you to your limits. Some nights, im in the gym 3 hours (Advanced Muay Thai, Grappling then Core). I’ve pushed myself harder here than in any other physical environment EVER! Alone at a gym, I wouldn’t be able to do that bc I can dog it and no one would know, at least here, you’re motivated by your peers to push it. And the results are there.
In terms of effectiveness, I’ve competed in tournaments since I’ve started and have been able to put what I’ve learned into practice and place (1^st, 2^nd or 3^rd place).

It is one big single mat space with lockers for both men and women. The men’s locker is a bit narrow on days that there’s a big group. But I appreciate the showers for days I need to go into work after class or an outing. Mat space is ample for training with an assortment of body bags, Thai pads and mitts.

What else can you say for having a professional UFC fighter showing you the ropes. He’s still presently competing so he’s got «skin in the game» to represent himself well. He definitely monitors your progress and works on strengthening your weaknesses.

It’s not LA fitness at $ 40/​month but for the $ 100+ /​month pricing, if you’re going every day or the majority of the week, it’s well worth it. I compare it to paying a personal trainer anywhere from 80−160/hr. Instead you have Sensei on your a$$ working you that I’d prefer than paying one person to train me.
Give it a shot for a week — you won’t regret it.

RIPOFF ALERT!
Louis Gaudinot, UFC fighter, and ‘sensei’ and manager of the Tiger (201) Schulmann’s in Hoboken, NJ has done the incredible…
Here are the highlights of what happened:
1. Their school was offering a ‘free class’ to try it out, so in May of 2012, I went in and gave it a shot
2. After the class, Gaudinot took me and my friend into his office to ‘close’ us with a 1 year membership
3. We said ‘no’.
4. He then modified the contracts, and offered us to try it out for one month
5. We said ‘yes’, and he charged us for one month
6. Due to our job demands, we never returned after the first class
7. Once month later, I noticed a charge for $ 259 in my bank statement, so I called Louis Gaudinot up, but he was not available… So I told his secretary to please cancel my membership, and to refund the 2^nd payment. She said she would have this taken care of not to worry. I believed her, and forgot about it. 8. A few months later, I noticed another Tiger Schulmann charge in my statement. After further investigation, I realized that they did not refund me, and had never stopped charging me.
9. After trying for weeks to get in touch with Louis Gaudinot directly, I finally succeeded. He said to me that he would not refund me, and that I could take him to court if I wanted. When I asked him how he could blatantly rip me off like this, he did not have a response.
10. Then I asked him to send me a copy of the contract I signed so I could take further action, and he said he could not. He said their email «was broken» and their fax machine «was down».
11. Bottom line: I took one class at Tiger Schulmann’s and had to pay $ 1,300.00 for it. Not only that, but I never signed anything that said they could bill me more than once!
Louis Gaudinot and Tiger Schulmann’s are aggressively cheating people left and right. Their fraudulent activities are unethical and highly illegal. They think because they are martial arts experts that they can use physical intimidation to dissuade customers from complaining. Stay away from them at all costs, and please share this information.

Tiger Schulmann’s is simply the McDonald’s of martial arts gyms.
The classes themselves are very basic and EXTREMELY structured. I mean structured in the bad sense that there is never much flow or improvisation to branch off and talk about something semi related to whatever is is your studying.
The instructor’s are well intentioned. But, they are generally no where near as capable at teaching grappling as a BJJ black belt.
The biggest flaw with Tiger Schulmann’s is the price. If I remember correctly. The program was priced with a 600 dollar down payment, and a 200 monthly fee. That is INSANE considering you can get better training just about ANYWHERE else for MUCH less.
There is shady marketing involved too. Generally what they do is they start you off with their $ 99 unlimited month of training. After that month is up, they sit you down after class when you’re all winded and talk you up about how well you’re doing, how you need to keep training because you will do so well. Then, when you can barely comprehend what they’re saying, they rush the contract on you.
If you are considering MMA, grappling, or kickboxing as a hobby, I STRONGLY suggest looking elsewhere. If you’re in hoboken, go to edge.

This is really more like a 3.5 star review. Also for the record I have been training here for almost 3 years and have only trained at the location in Manhattan. Thus, in case you are slow or just waking up, this review is strictly about the Manhattan location.
When I first started at TSK (TSMMA) they used to do a lot of self defense work. Every saturday we used to work on self defense type situations. However, they have completly eliminated that from the classes which I think is a crappy decision. It used to make the classes a lot more fun and enjoyable. Now they teach just grappling and kick boxing/​boxing.
It is for sure a great way to stay in shape and the Sensei’s will push you to achieve your goals. Overall I have enjoyed my time here. However, over the last year I have noticed a considerable decline in attention while training. In addition, they have changed up the classes so much that I often find myself bored (yes as hard as that is to imagine) compared to the first 1 ½ years I have trained.
In addition there are a few of the instructors who run classes but don’t do a good enough job protecting students from some of the jackasses who act like we are training for the UFC here. I would agree with Dolores reagrding the forms training, TSK no longer does this.
I would disagree with OD N who said the classes are reasonable priced. Granted it does work out to about $ 28/​class you are required to pay for your classes up front and cannot purchase less than 200 classes at time. I am sure you can do the math. I cannot remember the last time the Manhattan location had a buddy week. And currently the $ 99 special only gets you two weeks of unlimited training. It is important also to point out you will also have to spend money to buy your gloves and wraps. If you end up sparing in the kick boxing class you will also need head gear, mouth guard, shin and foot pads ($ 200+). Assuming you train often you will also need to buy more tshirts. Finally, grappling will also cost you additional money as you need to buy a rash guard shirt which last time I checked was $ 45 (and if you are smart ear guards {$ 10]).

Tiger Schulmann’s is now officially an Mixed Martial Arts (TSMMA) gym so don’t let the name fool you. The Hoboken branch only has one training room so they have one class at a time. This also limits the classes that they can offer. The Hoboken location offers Grappling, Core, and Kickboxing. Other locations such as Manhattan with multiple rooms offer Boxing, and Bag Training as well. Although you have a home location you are more than welcome to take classes at any location using your membership card. I like the Hoboken location since they tend to have smaller class sizes so you get more individual attention and thus you learn maneuvers faster.
The price of TSMMA is competitive and comparable to most any gym clubs with my plan the average class I take comes out to $ 28 per class which isn’t bad considering that classes are an hour long. TSMMA offers promotions such as buddy week where a friend can come and workout for free to see if they like it. If you are a newbie your first month of training is $ 99 and you get a free workout uniform.

This is a martial arts school for someone interested in combat arts and/​or a very tough workout. If you are looking for a traditional school with forms training (kata), meditation, traditional décor, etc., this is not the school for you. If, on the otherhand, you are interested in mixed martial arts (MMA), ultimate fighting (UFC), and grappling, this is an excellent choice.
The cirriculum here is divided into three courses: core (where you learn basic kicking & punching techniques, as well as close range hand-​to-​hand defense techniques), kickboxing (about ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ split between teaching hand and leg techniques, as well as effective blocking and evasive techniques, countering), and grappling (ground fighting, submission grappling).
The senseis are excellent and motivational, and the student body is friendly and close-​knit. Classes are offered M-​Saturday, mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
Most TSK locations have a program whereby you can take an intro class one-​on-​one with a sensei; I would recommend this before signing up for classes.
People get into fantastic shape when they come to class on a regular basis. Each class begins with a warm up that includes push ups and sit ups. Classes are challenging and everyone who needs to lose weight and tone up does. Martial arts is one of the most effective whole-​body systems for physical fitness there is.
