Established in 2009.

We offer an exciting mix of authentic Portuguese barbecue, grilled in our real wood charcoal fire pit, as well as traditional favorites from our kitchen.

Our signature Frango de Churrasco, or Free Range Chicken, is butterflied and grilled fresh in our real wood charcoal fire pit. These chickens are hormone and antibiotic-free and roam freely within smaller family-operated farms, so they tend to be smaller and leaner.

Our old world fire pit and house-made sauce allows us to recreate the authentic flavors of Portugal — we’re confident you won’t find a chicken anywhere else like it!

Ever since coming to the USA, they dreamt of applying their experience towards opening a restaurant that delivered the level of quality and gastronomic experience they had come to miss from their homeland.

Quiet on a Tuesday night. The TV on the wall was playing some scenes of a rave. Soon thereafter, when commercial time came, they put more rave music in the overhead music. Interesting. There’s a large high tabe there that seats 14, it makes me want to throw a party just to fill it.
It’s BYOB. I ordered the garlic chicken, based on the waiter’s recommendation, and my beaux ordered a «combo». When the waiter came out with dishes, he looked at me and said our order would be right out, and proceeded to give our dishes to the 3 table filled in the room. ANyway, that table looked a little confused and then he turned right around, realizing the mistake and gave it to us. Anyway, it was delish. I took half of it home, though I meant to take 2/3rds of it… but after I tried some of the spicy piri piri sauce I wanted to keep eating more. My beaux thought the combo of chicken and ribs was good — perhaps not the best he’s ever had but still good for the price. He took less than a quarter of it home. I didn’t see anything I wanted from the dessert menu, I’m not a fan of custards and those type of textured-desserts. We did try their special coffee with the shot of milk, but it tasted just like an expresso. I would be willing to try it again.

I love some good portugese fare. We went for brunch here last weekend.
The place was not busy and we decided to sit outside as the weather was so nice. This place is BYOB which is awesome. We brought liquor and our server helped us opening the bottles, he even offered to make some sangria with the red wine which we brought.
The menu is huge and we took the server’s advice is ordering food. We went with whole chicken, bacon wrapped turkey rolls. Also ordered the sides of rice, beans and salad.
Whole Chicken — Really tasty and flavorfull
Bacon wrapped turke rolls — Just OK, there was a lot of meat but very less flavour.
Sides — The sides were really small that’s why they are $ 1 each. My beans were very dry.
The service here was awesome, all the staff made sure we had a good time. Will definitely come here again!

OK so I came here for a sit down birthday dinner on Friday. I was in a group of 12 so we made reservations for the big table. The waiter was very attentive and funny. Several people in my group got the Mariscada in Red Sauce and loved it. A few others got the BIFE A PORTUGUESA and loved it, including the birthday girl who is Portuguese. I got the chicken and garlic and even though I was stuffed, I couldn’t stop eating until I finished my dish. The garlic sauce was actually unexpectedly delicious. I didn’t think it would be bad, I just didnt think it would be so so good. BYOB is always a perk. Everyone loved their meal and we even got the whole restaurant to join us in singing happy birthday. It was a warm night, 70 degrees in April so the front doors were all opening into the sidewalk. Amazing birthday dinner.

I have to preface by 1-star story by saying that my boss ate here just a few days before I did, and said it was fine. This story is specifically based on the yackfest I had today as a result of having the shrimp in garlic and saffron rice for dinner last night.
I suppose it’s my fault, for order seafood via Seamless to begin with, but I have before, so figured it wouldn’t hurt. OH BUT IT DID! For 6 hours straight to be exact. It was like the exorcism of Emily Rose in the bathroom and then some. I know it was the shrimp, because of the timing, and also because of the taste. Unfortunately, I just thought they didn’t season it well (which is why I still wouldn’t rate Piri higher than a 2 even without the praying to the porcelain God) Turns out, it was just bad shrimp.
It is now 6 hours after the last time I threw up, and I’m still hurting, and scared to eat anything PERIOD.

Had the misfortune of unintentionally going to Hoboken on their St Patrick’s celebration 3 weeks prior to the big day. That led to packed restaurants that sold alcohol so we found this byob place with no wait and tables available. Chorizo app had some unchewable gristle which was gross. The garlic chicken was really good, it definitely tasted much better than it looked. Service good.

This place is definitely just average. Being portuguese, i have to say their food was just ok. Not horrible, but not great. However, their piri piri sauce was great and so was their dessert –serra dura. Its also reasonably priced, BYO, and the waitstaff was great. Not a bad place to try out, just not the best.

What happened!!! The food here use to be so good. We had a few hit or miss with their delivery times in the past but the pork was well marinated and the shrimp in garlic sauce was always cooked just right. The last time I was here was about a year ago and I guess since then a lot has changed. Last night my family ordered a marinated meat entrée and a seafood rice dish. The delivery was very fast considering they are in Hoboken and I was in Jersey City but I have to say that was the only positive thing about the whole experience.
The marinated pork, chicken medley was dry and tasteless. My seafood rice dish was horrible beyond words. The rice was undercooked. All the seafood was overcooked. The cod cakes were miniscule and extremely oily. Both our orders were also missing the soup and salad.
The whole experience left us highly disappointed in them and honestly I would never order from them again. A better Portuguese option would be to go to Iberia Tavern & Restaurant in Newark.

My wife is Portuguese so we are very familiar with what Portuguese food is supposed to taste like. Please don’t go here thinking you’re getting the real thing.
The chicken tasted like it was just doused in hot sauce and was barely edible. We asked if the natas were fresh and ended up with natas that were several days old.
The delivery man forgot the soup and salad. We had to call the restaurant to have him return. He brought the soup and never brought the salad. At that point we stopped trying.

We thought we would give it a shot because it got a pretty favorable write up in the NY Times, but leason learned — the NJ regional food reviewer is not the next Sam Sifton. The BBQ chicken was decent and moist, but the short ribs were flavorless. And the «Piri Piri sauce» that got special mention in the NYT review is Frank’s Hot sauce.
Nothing was «bad» — but unless for some reason you are entirely incapable of driving 10 minutes to one of the many great Portuguese places in Newark, you should not come here.

I was really torn between 2 and 3 stars, but after reading other reviews and thinking of the truly excellent Portuguese food available a few miles away in Newark, I settled on 2 stars.
We got there around 7 on a Sunday and were the only patrons. That’s usually the first sign you should run screaming to another establishment. However, they did get a write up in the NYT so we decided to give it a chance.
We chose to sit outside as it was a beautiful night and the chairs and tables were very cheap and uncomfortable. The service was very cold and slowwww.
The food was about 3 stars, though. We shared the chicken and short ribs from the grill; and the steak with gravy, ham, and fried egg. The short ribs were a little fatty, but the chicken was good and a little spicy. The steak dish was great but you could tell it was made first because the gravy had a filmy layer on top. It is crowned by homemade potato chips but unfortunately they were a little soggy. Not realizing neither of our dishes came with vegetables, we later ordered a side of collard greens, which were crunchy, garlicky, and very good.
Overall– I’m glad we finally tried it, but doubtful I would return.

Went to Piri Piri for the first time for dinner on a Tuesday evening, which is also «Free garlic shrimp appetizer» night when you order 2 entrees. Service was friendly but VERY slow — it took nearly an hour to get our entrees from the time we sat down. The garlic shrimp appetizer was mediocre — the sauce was flavorful, but the actual shrimp had a chewy texture. I ordered the barbecued short ribs, cooked medium, and was disappointed when the meat I was served was rubbery with no tinge of pink to be found. My friend asked to substitute chips for fries and was told that was not possible… um, okay. You would have thought she asked him to grow the potatoes himself.
If you want tasty Portuguese food, skip this place and brave the Ironbound in Newark.

The low consensus ratings are correct.
Having been here a few times now I can say, this is a pass.
The food ranges from one-star to three-stars while below average service and above average prices.
Newark has cheaper places with much better food, unfortunately it can be a trek to get into Newark. Still, this isn’t your local solution to Portuguese food.

DO THE RODIZIO ON THURSDAY! Fantastic sirloin, and the most unbelievable pork sausage I’ve had in a long time. Their kale is good, but the other sides are neither here nor there. 4 stars based simply on the salty, delicious beef and that magical pork. YUM.

Being a first timer to this particular establishment but having a very astute knowledge of Iberian Cuisine (Spanish, Galician and Portuguese) was the basis of my rating.
When we went we ordered the Octopus Gallego but, it was decent but a bit on the salty side which traditionally is done as an accompaniment to beer or wine. I will say that I have had better but it was not that bad.
Next was the T-Bone steak which was acoompanied with rice, french fries and a mini salad. I was very happy with the piri piri sauce which was full of flavor. The steak was cooked a little bit rarer than I had requested (I asked for medium) but for my taste I was fine with it. This would have upset other people but the steak was quite flavorful. The rice was delicious with a hint of extra virgin olive oil which is traditional. The french fries were cooked properly and the salad was tasty.
The overall décor of the establishment was attractive and the tables were designed as tiles. I will say that cutting into the steak had my plate kind of moving around so perhaps a nice table setting would have helped. Also my knife was very dull and I kept hearing that scratching sound (annoying) which definitely I did not like. I would recommend this establishment overall if you are in the Hoboken area. If you are looking for the real deal and have the time you would be better off heading to the Ironbound section of Newark which by far is more authentic.

I feel bad giving this place 2 stars, but I agree with previous reviews, the owner is not very nice. We had wanted to use the
certificate for dinner last night, and I had called during the day to confirm they accept the certificate since others said they had trouble using it. First thing we did when we sat down was to ask if they still accept the
certificate. The waiter wasn’t sure, so he brought the cert to the owner, who came by to say they don’t accept anymore, and they’ve stopped since 9÷15÷2010. He placed the blame on the website, how it’s a bad company, and kept shaking his head. Funny thing is, I bought mine on 9÷30÷2010. Maybe he didn’t properly notify them… because I’ve bought close to 30 certs from
, and when some of the restaurants don’t participate anymore, there’s a note underneath that would say we can receive credit.
I didn’t try the food in this restaurant, given that there’s so many food choices on Washington St., we left before we even got our waters.

Piri Piri is a hot Portugese sauce put on the table to eat with the barbecue and meal– yum. This Portugese barbecue joint has cheap, interesting lunch options hence the trip.
The special that was listed online was no longer offered, no matter, at Piri Piri you can eat well for under $ 10.
Ordered– Vegetable soup– $ 1.95
Pork ribs with rice and fries– $ 6.95
Quite a good soup with collards, cabbage, beans and a few pieces of pasta thrown in. The pork ribs– only two, but two well cooked and tasty ones with yellow rice and good fries. The piri piri sauce added alot of tomatoey, vinegary flavor and the food was quite good and unusual for the price. Nice server.

Dine in — very nice friendly atmosphere, good buzz, possibly a bit understaffed (seems like mom and pop run the show) so don’t plan on rushing through your meal, but you can enjoy a relaxed pace regardless if other tables are waiting to sit.
Interesting menu with unspectacular execution; BYO makes the $ 30 per person (entrée and app) total cost down to a very fair rate for the experience. Nice touch with the olives and pickeld vegetables brought out with bread. Food is a bit underseasoned but the hot sauce is excellent and is a quick and easy remedy.
Very good value on the bbq take-out specials ($ 10 ½ chicken or ribs, rice, chips, & drink).

Having a place like Piri Piri in Hoboken makes sense. Portuguese barbecue is awesome and for those who can’t make the trip out of town, a local option is clutch. The meats are all grilled in a wood charcoal fire. For some reason the idea of using wood burning fires makes the dishes sounds even tastier.
The small authentic looking framed pictures hung across one side of the dinning room walls were interesting. They also had a somewhat out of place flat screen TV in the middle of the other wall. A soccer game and then MTV were on while we ate. Didn’t understand the need for a TV. I’m starting to think that TVs a believed to somehow improve an area (i.e. any local watering-hole). The music playing was some crazy foreign stuff with a beat. Good tunes!
That being said let’s talk about the food. While the platters are great in portion, they lack any authentic flavors that remind me of dining in the Ironbound. The food is on the salty side, which is my biggest gripe. The Piri Piri sauce they talk about is good, but it tastes just like Frank’s Red Hot sauce. They definitely need apps that don’t cost that same price as entrees. No value in ordering apps here.
I want to see a more improved menu before giving it another shot.
Some weekly specials would also be nice.

For app: we had the clams and the sausage. The clams were very good. It may have been a little salty but i like salty food. The sausage was good because of the sauce that comes with it but the actual sausage itself was dry.
Everyone at the table ordered the short ribs but i wanted to go the more traditional route. I’m not sure what i had but it was steak, ham egs, potato chips all drenched in this delicious gravy. The portions are HUGE and you get the most out of your meal plus left overs for lunch the next day.
Big plus is BOYB. There should be a Unilocal portion dedicated to ONLY BOYB places. I was dissapointed to find a fly in my drink. Its not the restaurant’s fault, it because my wine was superdelicious!

Finally, a new restaurant that’s not another sushi or pizza place. Nice addition to Hoboken. Prices weren’t bad, and the food was good.
The flambé sausage was fun to watch and good to eat.
It’s BYO, and there’s a liquor store across the street.
