Hair Cult

I’ve had several haircuts with Stephanie Diaz and couldn’t be happier. She has great instincts, a lovely but real personality (none of the fake niceness you get at some salons), and during my most recent appointment she miraculously transformed my hair into a chic but easy to maintain style that I didn’t think was possible with my volume or texture. The salon is also serene and well-​decorated. I’m very happy to have Hair Cult and Stephanie in Hoboken!

I’ve had my hair, cut, styled, cut, balyaged, etc here for well over 10 years. My stylist Jenny is by far the best I’ve eve met and let me tell you, I’m a «hair fanatic.» I’ve worn all colors, cuts, and styles and she always manages to do an AMAZING JOB. Not everyone can cut super short pixies, but she sure as heck does.
Also my oldest, get his hair cut here. He has very curly hair and wears it long and most barbers wouldn’t know how to deal with that but Jenny does! :)
My hair is amazing and the prices, although a bit on the higher scale, don’t bother me. I do WISH they included the blowout w/​special effects hair color, such as Hi-​Lights, balyage, ombré, to off set the high prices. Or have some sort of Customer appreciation program.

I had a cut and color today with Stephanie A, based on reviews and a stranger’s recommendation. Steph was fantastic — friendly, knowledgeable and a talented stylist. I was in desperate need of a cut and changed my color dramatically. She did an excellent job and I will be back to see Stephanie again and again!

Stephanie Diaz is the best! I’ve been going to her for about 4 years now and always leave with a smile on my face. She is amazing at cutting & coloring, always interested in trying out new techniques, and the best to chat with while getting your hair done :) If you have trouble thinking of new styles she is quick to offer suggestions that work with your face shape and tones & always does an outstanding job. Also the products at Hair Cult smell amazing, even the hair dye, and the atmosphere is really relaxing.

So lucky I found Stephanie Atwell. She has such a great energy about her and really listens to what you want and gives you her thoughts to ensure your color/​cut comes out PERFECT! I went to her for my blond highlights and cut before my wedding (which turned out absolutely stunning) and just went last week to change it up for Fall with caramel highlights. I won’t go to anyone else– thank you so much Stephanie!!!

I had a great hair cut with Stephanie. The salon is immaculate and the staff is really nice. The hair cut comes with a very welcome head massage in the beginning and some wonderful smelling hair products. I’ll definitely be back!

Walked in on a Saturday and had a haircut from Stephanie Atwell. There was luckily a cancellation while I was standing there trying to make an appt. Stephanie listened to what I wanted (I also showed her pics) and she did an excellent job with my haircut. This is the first time I’ve been happy with a haircut since I moved and left my regular stylist back home. The only downside which honestly isn’t a big deal to me is that this is an Aveda salon. I’ve never really cared for Aveda products, it is also a little overpriced ($ 70 for a 15min haircut) and even though the salon is nice they really don’t pamper their guest like a lot of higher end salons. There was a girl who started me off with a «massage» and washed my hair but she was not really good or relaxing at all. The effort was there so I’m not hold that against them. Overall, I will be back. Stephanie did an awesome job and even though I’ve been to nicer salons and paid less, you cant put a price on how amazing you feel when you get an awesome haircut that is exactly like you wanted.

Stephanie A was amazing! She was calm, caring and made my hair cut experience perfect. I have curly mixed hair & previous hair cuts at other salons ended in tears. Stephanie trimmed my hair while dry and curly. I love the cut! The ladies at the salon were very knowledgable about minority hair. I can’t wait for my next appointment!

Stephanie Diaz is my girl. She works wonders and has taught me more about my hair in the past three years than I ever knew before. The salon is always on time — I never wait for my appointment after I arrive. Great choice!

This is one of the best Aveda hair salon in New Jersey.

I highly recommend Hair Cult! First of all, it’s pretty to look at inside with beautifully painted walls, friendly service, and lots of good-​for-​you hair products. I travel from Brooklyn to Hoboken just to get my hair done by Steph (Atwell). She is the best stylist, colorist, and cutter EVER. She really listens to how I want my hair whether it be beachy waves, just a trim, or a full on hair makeover. She’s colored my hair many times (blonde and brown) and we’ve adventured together with blue, pink, and purple highlights too. She always makes it look classy and unique. Steph is super friendly and while she takes great care in making sure your hair will look its best, you won’t be in the salon for hours on end, she’s efficient. Great staff and vibe!

This is the 3^rd time I have gone back to see the masseuse, Carmen. Let me tell you, I can be a massage snob and have been to some lovely places with robes and steam showers, etc… NO ONE comes close to the amazing massage that Carmen gives! Although Marma has no bells and whistles when it comes to atmosphere, I will continue coming back time after time– she is a master at relieving stress, reducing knots, and it is just a wonderful massage. Highly recommended!

I found this place because I followed my stylist there — Stephanie Diaz is awesome and very good at color! If I could separately give a stylist stars, she would receive 5. Good quality cut, it generally takes me a good 5 – 6 weeks on my fast growing hair to start noticing that styling it is getting difficult and I need another cut.
I am generally very happy with the service, the place is nice and trendy looking — I am a bit confused at their pricing policy, which is the only reason they get 4 stars.
Somehow, if you only come in for color and don’t do haircut, the blowout is not free! How is that possible? I’ve never seen a salon where the blowout post-​service was not free. What am I supposed to do, walk around 12 degrees weather with my hair wet?
Also, $ 185 for just highlights seems excessive. The first time I did color there, I went in with badly executed highlights that poor Stephanie had to fix, so I expected a higher price, but still … Overall pricing just doesn’t make sense there. I’ll keep going because I really like the stylist but just wanted to call it out. It would help to get an estimate before you begin.

I LOVE THIS SALON! The place itself it so cute, and the people are incredibly sweet. The scalp massage/​neck massage is the most amazing thing ever! Stephanie Diaz is INCREDIBLE, I trust her completely with my hair. I always get a ton of compliments! Bravo hair cult bravo.

Came here last week in need of a major cut and wanted some different type of color. I literally had no idea what it is i wanted to do and was a little weary. My stylist was Stephanie and she seemed really chill and down to earth, plus she likes to call everyone babe. I did that one thing that is so hard to do. trust your hair stylist. Trusting your hair stylist is about the same as trusting a lover not to screw you over. It’s like playing jenga with the last few pieces.
I told her put whatever color in my hair you think is best and it was a fast beautiful and quick process. So afterwards i came out walking around confused as to what i just did, I’m not use to my hair having much color in it and it was like a dark lavender going into lighter. I don’t even know what my hair color is still but once it started sinking in after the first day i was like holy ish i like this, i really dig this hair color.
So to sum it up Steph is just great and i really took that step in trusting her and I’m glad i did.

I’m writing this review again since I’ve now been going here for well over a year. I tired other salons and was not happy with the outcome. In my opinion Hair Cult is superior to all others in this area. Laurie does my hair and she’s always great with cut and color. My husband has another stylist Lindsey, and feels the same way. Actually all the stylists are awesome here. It’s a comfortable place to go and be sure to look for Leeche who is always around (small cute dog) :)

I went yesterday for a Prenatal massage and had Jean.
She was late for our appointment, but the owner did sit and chat with me. I used to live in that neighborhood and was religious about going to the Hair Cult (until my guy went to Toni and Guy) and used them exclusively for massages — including prenatal massages for my 2005 and 2008 pregnancies.
I ended up here as I had a very sore/​stiff neck and had hoped for relief. I actually felt pretty good by the time I went as I had Acupuncture the day before.
I noticed that the place seemed run down. I was brought into the room and told her what was wrong. She then told me to get undressed and left me alone — whatever happened to being given a robe, slippers?
When she hit my pain points, felt good. Everything else was just not great.
I was kind and still left her a 20% tip; but next time will make Bliss Spa work or go into the city like my mother in law wanted.
Was once great and the fee was reasonable (under $ 100 for a massage); but next time, definitely going to Bliss or somewhere else.

Super service, TLC, massage, attn to details w delish coffee and attentive staff. My highlight and cut were great too. Laurie, owner, was great.

ZERO STARS. I went to get my hair done yesterday at noon. It was such a long, sad series of events that I’m going to put it in bullet format so that it’s all easier to digest.
* My appt starts late (12:10) because receptionist doesn’t show up on time.
* I explain what cut and color I want to my stylist. My hair was shoulder length, roots to mid were sandy blonde, mid to ends were platinum and well taken care of. I wanted a dark, warm espresso color with plum tones.
* Alex told me she would have to do a «filler» to even out the color first which would cost an extra $ 50, I declined. I said I only wanted single process color. She said okay.
* She mixes color (but only enough to cover ¾ of my head), and applies it the same way I’ve ever had dye applied professionally, otherwise I would have stopped her (nothing I’ve ever had to pay extra for, let alone $ 100). She goes to mix more color, and takes a while at that.
* Once my color is on she tells me it has to sit for a further 45 minutes; I end up sitting for an ENTIRE HOUR. It’s 1:50 at this point, and the dye has been on my head for at least and hour and twenty minutes while she took another customer. That is completely unnecessary.
* She finally washes my hair and tells me she’s doing a conditioning treatment, I ask how much it is, she says $ 5, I say fine. The conditioning treatment ends up being 3 spritzes of Damage Remedy that she doesn’t even massage into my ends.
* I then get left at the shampoo bowl in that super awkward position for another 30 – 40 minutes. I can no longer feel my neck. (The muscles at the back of my neck are now quite literally bruised and painful to move.)
* Alex hurriedly cuts my hair, doesn’t show me any of it, rushes me to the register to pay. (It is now 3:50 and my shift at work starts in ten minutes.)
* When I get to work my coworkers point out the uneven color, the splotches of purple dye on my face and globs of dye IN MY EARS, and my hairline which is dyed in an unsightly zigzag of brushstrokes.
* Today I realize the cut is jagged and uneven as well, no matter which direction I part or style it, it’s in tatters.
* I speak to the Laurie (owner of the salon), she says I was given the color and cut that I asked for, she says ‘oops’ about the mess of dye on my skin, she basically says ‘oh well’ about my wait, and she says I could have sat up at the shampoo bowl if my neck was numb, that I wasn’t strapped to the chair. What an incredibly rude and unprofessional response!
* I come in today to speak to Laurie. Alex and Laurie sit on either side of me, gang up on me, and literally never let me finish a sentence. They speak over me and each other, they condescend me and make me feel like an idiot and sound like a liar.
* Alex tells me that before she started she told me she was going to «pull through» the color, which she now also refers to as a «glaze», and that it cost extra money. (A glaze and a pull through are not the same thing, and neither were ever mentioned, if they were I would have declined them). She tells me that $ 85 for single process color means I’m only getting a root touch up. Laurie pipes in an says that it clearly says that on the website. It says nothing of the sort on the website, it only says single process color for $ 85 and up.
* I told her that when I came in, in person to book my appointment that I asked if the $ 85 single process color would be enough, that I wanted my whole head dyed, or if they’d have to do double process or something, and I was told that was fine (they checked my hair.) I asked for the BEST colorist in the salon and I ended up with a junior stylist. I was told one thing and ended up with another every step of the way. I said I did not want any treatments or services without my knowledge or approval. I wanted a specific color that I know looks great on me and I ended up with a purple color verging on blackness (with blonde patches) and I look completely washed out and ruddy. Neither Laurie nor Alex somehow could not see the choppy hair and uneven color. They tell me over and over that I’m just getting used to the contrast of going from a light color to a dark one. (My hair has been every color of the rainbow, there’s nothing for me to ‘get used to’.)
* Laurie is getting fed up and giving Alex looks at this point and when I tell her I need a refund she slaps an insulting $ 15 in front of me (I left it there). I don’t even understand how she came to that amount. My total was $ 160, before my $ 20 off coupon, and the cut was $ 60. I was never told what I was being charged for, and somehow they couldn’t come to an agreement on pricing vs what I ended up paying.
* I end up being there for 3 hours and 50 minutes, and was 10 minutes late to work. Ridiculous.
When I tried to calmly rectify things with the owner, I’m met with rudeness, backpedaling, condescension, and blame. Neither Laurie nor Alex deserves any of the money I paid, and Laurie’s negative reputation precedes her. Do not go here.
