I really wanted to love my meal here. The nostalgia of the place gives me fond memories of my childhood. Before I get to the bad part I will say the service here is excellent! But 57.00 for two beers and three hamburgers, that were preformed frozen over cooked patties, was RIDICULOUS! I was shocked. The burger was simply tasteless, dry and small. Awesome French onion soup, though.

Caramel rolls? Pecan caramel rolls? Avoid the casino crowds! Probably the best bakery goods in the area. This is small town food, don’t whine if you grew up in a large metro area & don’t get what I mean. Eggs, hash browns, pancakes, etc. served all day. The burgers are pretty good, salads are small as they are sides to meals. The caramel rolls are as close to grandma’s as you can get without mixing up your own. Desserts… typical for smalltown diners, the homemade pies & cakes are okay. Nothing is better than homemade, so keep that in mind. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The crowd is a mixture of locals, casino want to be winners, most likely losers. lol Prices are comparable to Perkins. There is a second dining area that serves alcoholic beverages if you’re looking for an evening meal.

Everyone says you need to stop here, you need to stop here. The food was boring and the service was average.

Simply awful. You name it: food, slow service, dirty bathrooms, dated décor, atmosphere is unwelcoming with rude servers. Also, what is up with their refusal to give customers who request, a middle of the pan sweet roll? Real stupid!!! You think it’s good business to turn down a customer request who is buying your lousy sweet rolls? YOU should be paying the customer for even stopping by your dreadful place!!! Save your time and gas. Keep driving past this awful, shithole, ‘halfway point” to anywhere else. Never, ever again.

Dear Tobies, I remember back in the day, when people looked forward to stopping here on the«way up north». I myself drive by monthly at least, but as my standards have gotten higher, and the list of ingredients on your baked goods has gotten longer and harder to pronounce(and less likely to have been made from anything but a bakery supply house mix), I haven’t darkened the door in some time. So the other day I needed a little coffee to get me home. Avoided the gas station, thinking theirs would be bad. Stopped in for a roll and a coffee for the the road. I’m not sure what was in that cup, but I wouldn’t call it coffee. Adding the proverbial insult was the NONDAIRYCREAMER powder(in a restaurant, fully in view of multiple forms of refrigeration available for storing actual dairy). I suspect part of the problem is that«times are hard», costs are up, etc. I KNOW you’d do better with locals and passersby both if you could up your game a bit, or if you-all could get out of the way, and someone who cares a little about edible food and drink could move in… I’ll keep dreaming!

No better than your average Perkins, at higher prices. Hashbrowns were under-done; omelet was boring. The sheer size of the place also ensures that your not getting in and out in 45 minutes. The caramel rolls are over-rated… they’re big, but are actually somewhat dry since most of the caramel is just on the outside. I doubt I’ll be back as I’m sure there is probably a gem of a small town café within a few exits, just waiting to be discovered. Tobies is totally overrated.

I went to Tobies, and was seated right away. I sat for 10 to 15 minutes without even placing a drink order, or even water. I didn’t stay. Taco bell was delicious

We stopped at Tobies for some bakery items during a work trip because we all had great memories from years ago. Sadly, we waited in line for a long time because the people working behind the counter moved like snails. No sense of urgency at all. My coworker asked for a middle cinnamon roll and was told no, that wasn’t the next in order to give out. Really? Not very good customer service. No smile or thank you. This is supposed to be a place that everyone stops between the cities and Duluth. Probably won’t stop again.

We stopped because this seems to be hailed as a great place to stop on the way to Duluth. It was not that great. It could be partially what I ordered. The potato pancakes are not good. I appreciate diner type places when they are tasty but this was very mediocre

Soggy onion rings, dry turkey on the club and a hamburger patty on the spaghetti? Gross.

Restaurant prices unreasonable for a roadside place with merely serviceable food. Just paid 6.95 for a tiny bowl of chili. 3.50 for small plate of fries. Time to find another option for my trips to North shore.

Tobies always has been, and always will be, the mid-point stop for those traveling between the Twin Cities and Duluth. The food is pretty run of the mill. The real reason to stop is for the caramel rolls and/or donuts. I will say that over the years, the donuts have gotten smaller, and the prices have increased. However, after a recent stop one morning, I’m happy to report that while the donuts are smaller than they used to be, they are still every bit as delicious. We ordered a variety — raspberry bismark, apple fritter, blueberry bismark, custard filled long john — and every single one of them was fresh and remarkable. They were remarkable not only for their freshness(the apple fritter was still warm), but also because they didn’t skimp on the fruit filling or the toppings. The raspberry and blueberry bismarks were practically bursting with filling. They also had generous amounts of frosting on them. If you need a bathroom break on your way to or from Duluth, stop in at Tobies and grab a roll for the road. You won’t regret it.

Horrible Service!!! They must not get very many big groups. Our food came out a couple plates at a time. It took 2 hours for 3 plates of Alfredo and a turkey club to come out. Terribly slow service and food was just okay, but then again it was late and we were hungry. We complained to the manager who could have cared less. In her words«did you eat your food?» Us, «Yes» her answer«then what’s the problem» Never again!

Donuts are good but the rest of the food is really bad. We had walleye dinner. It was so over cooked that there was no flavor left in the fish. We also had the corn beef melt. It was nasty. The corned beef was so over cooked that, again, there was no flavor left. We have been here many times and tried many different dishes. We will never eat here again. I recommend the Subway across the street. At least there you will get something that tastes like food and you can eat it. Enjoy the donuts and apple fritters at Tobie’s. Leave the rest of the food alone.

Tobies is kind of an institution for people who drive between the Cities and places North. Right off the highway, it’s an easy stop to grab a bite and it sure beats some of the fast food type joints if you want a sit-down restaurant. However, that said, it’s not fancy and in fact, some might say it’s dated. Still, it’s got its own charm and it’s got one hell of a bakery. I typically think of Tobies for breakfast(24⁄7 pretty much) and liken it to a diner really. You won’t get fancy fancy froo froo, but if you want some eggs over easy and hasbrowns, this is the place for you. Coffee is strong, staff is nice. Do yourself a favor and buy some stuff at the huge bakery counter to go. You will not regret it, especially when you get the munchies three hours later. Our favorite: Rhubarb Walnut muffin.

Not sure what all the hype is about here at Tobies. Took a day trip from the cities to Hinckley to spend a day looking through history(great museum about the Hinckley Fire of 1894) and just spending some quality time with the fam. Decided to stop by Tobies to try their«World Famous» caramel rolls. My consensus, Eh I have had much better. Nothing that made me stop breathing and exclaim with joy like others who have posted for this place. We tried a plain caramel roll and a pecan roll to be fair and this was before 10AM so its not like we got these at an odd hour. Both where dry, lacking in caramel, and overall not very good. The bottoms were tough and very chewy, almost burnt too brown. It was a crowd pushing place walking right into the front door too. I think that Nelson’s Bakery in Clearwater serves much better and just as big breakfast rolls and doughnuts, much better than here. Also Clearwater Travel Plaza is very similar to what Tobies is trying to do here, but Clearwater doesn’t look like a tacky tourist trap. Overall not impressed, glad I go up north through Saint Cloud more often so that I get to stop at Nelson’s Bakery for my tradition and not at Tobies.
