Orchid Tree Bed & Breakfast

Ditto everything others have said. Breakfast – yummy! We stayed in the attached suite and loved it. There was one other wonderful couple staying at the same time; we enjoyed afternoon and morning conversation with them and with Steve (Su was out of town); they bbq-​ed their own dinner right there one night. Too bad we didn’t get to the beach down the street. Those frogs annoyed my husband so much that we slept the second night with the lanai door closed; I didn’t mind them, though – they’re inhabitants of the entire Hilo area. We look forward to staying here again.

This place is AWESOME! The rooms are luxurious and such a great deal for the price! Steve is friendly, laid back, gives great recommendations for local activities and serves a killer bfast of fresh local fruits accompanied by another delicious item (we had his banana bread one day and waffles the other). If you’re staying in Hilo, this is the place to stay!

We feel lucky to have scored one of the rooms at this B&B due to a cancelation. The accommodations are luxurious! Our room (the koi suite) had a queen bed, a wonderful sitting area with a large sofa, a patio that overlooked the yard with a koi pond, and private access to the hot tub and pool. The room also has a very large walk-​in shower. Steve is the host and he puts out an amazing breakfast that includes a great spread of tropical fruits, granola, yogurt, and we even had homemade banana bread made from bananas growing right outside our room.
The room was nicely appointed with books on local history, travel books, wine glasses and a wine corker, coffee maker, flashlights, tv, DVD player, and lots of fresh towels. It was a short walk to the beach and close to downtown. This is the best place to stay in Hilo!

This was a lovely place to stay. Our family of three stayed in the Hula room which is large, spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished. The landscaping was gorgeous – I wish we had more time to spend there but we had a sighseeing agenda. Both mornings we were there, Steve provided a fruit platter that was almost too pretty to eat, a good selection of other breakfast foods and excellent coffee grown by his friend. I hope when we are able to return that we’ll have more time in Hilo, and I would be willing to base the timing of our trip on whether the Orchid Tree has a room available for us.

The premier status of Orchid Tree B&B in Hilo is well deserved. They have devoted much thought, time and love into the detail and care of this delightful B&B as evidenced by glowing compliments from past guests, many of whom return to stay again at this beautiful piece of paradise. We were a couple + a friend — the spacious Hula Suite was perfect for us. The breakfasts are spectacular and delicious — oh, how we will miss them! Steven and Su exude generous hospitality, great advice and insider tips of what to see and do on the Hilo side of the Big Island. They were the ultimate host/​hostess. Relax and stay a while — you won’t regret it. We have stayed at various hotels and B&B’s on the Hilo side, but none can quite compare — our hope is that Orchid Tree has availability when we visit again next year. A hui hou.

This place is so cozy and amazing. We followed Steve’s advice and had an awesome time on the island. Every morning there was a crazy amount of fresh fruit and either a fresh waffle or warm coffee cake. We were sorry to leave but we made the most of our time there, sitting in the hot tub and taking a walk to see the local beach and waterfall!

I’m privileged to be what I believe is the first reviewer of this lovely B&B. We stayed here with Steve and Su for our honeymoon during the week of Thanksgiving. They rent out two suites (one attached and one detached) from their home that are just beautiful and spacious, and everything we could have wanted. Our room was the detached, with a private lanai and a small hall going to the communal deck. It was outfitted with a bed, side tables, coffee table, sofa, two overhead fans, an AC unit, television and DVD player, one of those divided bathrooms with no shower door but a partial wall between shower and toilet, and a sink outside the bathroom.
The owners kindly outfit the room with several mugs, wineglasses, corkscrew, books about Hawaii, takeout menus and brochures, art and decorative items, as well as a shelf of DVDs on the communal deck. They have a lush and amazing backyard full of tropical plants, a big koi pond, and a swimming pool. Also available for use are snorkel masks and fins, boogie boards, beach towels, and probably a bunch of other things I’m forgetting. Am I beginning to sound like an advertisement?
A typical day at the Orchid Tree goes thusly: you’ll wake with the sun shining brightly (particularly if you’re in the detached room), and proceed to the communal deck around 8 to get hot water for tea, or coffee. If you’re lucky enough to be staying in the detached room, you’ll have a private lanai on which Steve will set you up a table, otherwise you’ll be set at the large table on the communal deck. After bringing a completely gorgeous tropical fruit platter to your table, artfully carved and sliced, Steve will set up some other breakfast items on the buffet on the communal deck. Generally this might include bagels and pastries, or he might bring you a Belgian waffle, or french toast, or perhaps that morning he’ll run up the street to grab a couple of malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts) for you.
After breakfast, Steve might ask what you’re planning for the day. He’s clearly very knowledgeable about the island and can provide you with ideas and directions for most anything you’d like to do. You’ll go about your day, and when you return for the evening, you can throw open your double doors to the warm, balmy evening, and listen to the (rather loud) calls of birds and frogs and who-​knows-​what that live nearby. I usually have trouble with lots of noise at nighttime, and for such people, Steve and Su kindly installed the air conditioning unit, which is also loud, but provides more of a «white noise» sound for those who prefer. I tried it the first night, but afterwards left it off and slept better than I usually do at home!
Located just north of Hilo proper, around the corner (literally) from Honoli’i Beach Park (great for surfing and swimming, not so much for lying on the sand — there isn’t any — and sunning). You will thank yourself a million times for choosing this place, I promise you that.
