After breakfast, picked up some malasada’s for later. The case was only half full, but it was 10:00 a.m. There was still a variety of choices, including some savory choices. The counter person was very helpful. I picked up haupia, pumpkin, pb&j, and a plain one. I like how the malasada is soft and not oily. Also, the filling wasn’t too heavy. I also like how its not too sweet. Yummy! Noticed that they also have a lunch buffet for $ 18, going to that next weekend. ;)

I had the«french toast» made with Uncle Billy’s malasadas at the motel restaurant, and absolutely loved it. It’s ENORMOUS, and piled with a huge amount of sweet, tart cooked fruit. Divine. Service was friendly. The premises are a little worn and flyblown.

Still the same goodness, just missing the personal touch at its new location. I just returned from having a Canadian bacon and cheese malasada from Baker Tom’s new location at Uncle Billy’s. The malasada was good and I have no complaints about the quality of Baker Tom’s malasadas. But if you’re expecting a down-to-earth-feel-good experience with Baker Tom himself, you’ll be disappointed. Those days are long gone. His new«location» is at Uncle Billy’s Restaurant. When you walk in the restaurant, you’re greeted by Baker Tom’s inventory of malasadas located next tot he hostess area. You order your malasadas from the hostess who will ring you up. The hostess was friendly and accommodating but no Baker Tom in sight talking stories with you. I will definitely stop by again to have his malasadas. I’m also a fan of the cheesecake malasadas which is not always available but worth the wait.

I got my malasadas basically ½ way through the day so I am giving an extra star because I know that if they were warm and fresh they would have been better, Baker Tom shouldn’t be held accountable for my tardiness. The other Unilocaler is right, he is the only dude around making these things, I had just plain since he was out of the rest except jalapeño. These are huge malasadas too so one or two and you need a nap. They sell out fast so go early and get some with some fruit filling. Not as good as Leonards in Oahu or Tex’s but if your in a rut or don’t want to drive an hour away these will do.

We’ve tried the apple, lilikoi and blackberry malasadas so far. The good points: 1. The fillings are nice and not too sweet. 2. The dough has a good texture and flavor. 3. There are versions without the granulated sugar coating. 4. His ‘shop’ is more conveniently located near the Liliuokalani Gardens. The bad points: 1. They’re really greasy. 2. The customer service is hit or miss. BOTTOMLINE: He’s the only game in town at the moment for malasadas.
