Sal’s Pizza in Hillsborough is a typical pizzeria in that it offers pizza and pizzeria type of dishes(subs, salads, dinners, etc …). What distinguishes Sal’s is there over-sized NYC slices which are huge, The pizza is good(not great) and they get a bit over creative with some of the specialty pies(Sal’s Sloppy Slice comes to mind, complete with BBQ sauce … ewww). The pizzeria itself isn’t a place you’ll go to for the ambiance … strictly a take out type of place. The customer service was fast and friendly and the pricing about normal for the area. Overall it’s a pizzeria … just not a particularly memorable one.

Born and bred a New Yorker I have spent the last 10 years in New England where they put sauce and cheese on a cracker and call it pizza. I searched for a house that was close to a decent pizza restaurant, Sals. Sal always stops to say hi, and tells me the specials. I buy what I like. If you want a New York style slice stop by. Sal also makes delicious Brooklyn style pizza! Soups, canolis and Hoagies(subs).

Obviously the food challenged wrote the two previous reviews. This review is written based upon about 6 visits to the restaurant in 2014. First and foremost know that Sal’s is not fine dining. The menu and the facility are value based and that formula has a place in this foodie’s budget and go to places. Sal’s is a pizza and pasta house. The average price of a meal is less than $ 20.00. The pizza is typical NYC styled thin crust. The sauce is Italian authentic, sweet and not laden with Americanized abominations such as oregano and garlic. You McDonalds folks can add it at the table. Do be careful with ordering a slice, as they are double sized. As a man that can easily down two slices, my recommendation is order one and if you are still hungry, order the second later. One of my favs is the buffalo chicken. There is a lot of meat on this slice. On those 6 visits Sal the owner visited my table twice. It gives me the opportunity to pump him for food information and yes he does advertise his specials. If you do not want to be sold food, then stick to McDonalds. You will be better served there. The place is solid, the food is solid, and I recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a value restaurant. See also the reviews for Sal’s Gourmet Pizza in Hillsborough. It is the same place. I don’t want to disparage this place of business. My hope is they take this review and learn from it. The owner can be short and make you feel like he’s forcing you to buy items. The pizza may be the worst I’ve had in NJ. Something is wrong with the ingredients they use. Dough is like cardboard, cheese & sauce have no flavor. Nothing tastes«fresh».

I had the same experience as the other poster concerning the customer service and being charged twice, although the one charge did disappear, I had to endure the abusive conversation from the owner. Aside from that the food is average and overpriced, really $ 20 for a Stromboli!
