Matthew’s Chocolates

Fun little shop with delicious chocolates and gelato. Expensive but worth the splurge for a little treat.

Matthew’s Chocolates creates chocolate pieces of artwork, fresh gelato, homemade marshmallows and coffee and chocolate drinks. It is a little shop with a dark interior and a few seats on the sofa or chairs. The chocolate is displayed in a the glass case on individual platters and the gelato is on the other side. It took me a few seconds to decide what I wanted because everything looked so appealing and decadent. I opted for the Jade Buddha and almost felt guilty eating him. The ginger and orange crispness reminded me of the orange slice chocolate you can find in England and it was a rich dessert. The prices are a little high yet you are paying for quality and would pay the same in a high-​end chocolate shop like Godiva or other Belgian chocolate shops. There is a nice big placard of the movie Chocolate on the wall and there are also chocolate bars and bagged marshmallows for sale. Everyone raved about the marshmallows so I will need to try those during my next visit. While walking down N. Churton Street, check out this chocolate shop and stop for a piece of decadence.

So good. My wife and I frequent Matthews on the regular, but were particularly enamored by the Bourbon soaked chocolate covered cherries (with a much more eloquent name that I just can’t remember) that were offered over the holiday season. Perfect marriage of cherry, vanilla buttercream, bourbon and chocolate. Needless to say, we’ll keep frequenting as long as Matthew’s is in town!

For anyone with a sweet tooth, this place is a must. One look at the display cases is enough to inspire Homer Simpson-​style drooling. Barks, truffles, and other blissful bites come in different shapes, colors, and chocolates dark and milk and white. All are homemade, and those sampled have tasted every bit as good as they looked. The clusters, for instance, have a good nut-​to-​chocolate ratio while spicier offerings pair ginger and Asian seasonings to bring a little heat to the sweet. Such is the quality that it absolutely justifies what seems at first to be overly ambitious pricing. You may balk at spending $ 2 to $ 3 for something that disappears in two bites, but when said bites are through, you’ll be glad that you did so.
If Matthew’s Chocolates has one Achilles’ heel, it isn’t the layout (the brightly marked chalkboards are easy to read) or the staff (quirky and typically friendly if occasionally harried) but rather the establishment’s own success. This isn’t a big space, and when it fills, lines will form, your view of the goods will be obstructed or blocked, and your patience may wear thin. Remind yourself that the chocolate is worth the wait, and you’ll appreciate it even more when that wait is through.

I like to get homemade marshmallows with my hot chocolate. I always take out one with my fingers and eat it right away, a little confection dipped in choco. This is the best way to do it.
Matthew’s is what a designer confectionery chocolate shop should be. A rare find in this neck of the woods, or anywhere, really. Incredible hot choco selection, perfect for this chilly time of year, but modifiable for those warmer months by adding a splash of their gelato. Heaven-​sent sinful.
This is a simple review for a simple shop. It’s decorated nice and cozy inside, with outdoor seating for warmer months (or in winter if you’re hard, like me). There’s real craftsmanship and artistry in Matthew’s, so check it out and find what’s your favorite.

Anytime I’m anywhere close to Hillsborough, I make sure to go to Matthew’s. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Their lemon cookie gelato is inspired. Like I think about it A LOT. Their chocolates are truly a work of art. They make for such a special gift — whether it’s to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or if you just come in and savor a few pieces with a coffee in the afternoon. Treat yourself. Treat everyone you know.

This place is amazing — everything, down to the marshmallows in the hot chocolate, is hand made, and done WELL. They also have plenty of lactose free options.

Blown away by the beautiful handmade chocolates, gelato, fun push up pops and artisan soda! We popped in for an after lunch treat and sat down to enjoy our truffles. It was hard to take the first bite because they were seriously perfect. We would have taken some with us, but it was a seriously hot day! A definite gem in Hillsborough.

All of the chocolates were delicious. I don’t find them to be that expensive actuall. Southern Season’s truffles are at least $ 3, and I think most of the truffles at Matthew’s are $ 2.50. I tried all of the truffles they had in the store when I went and my absolute favorite was the tiramisu. The cardamom is worth a try too if you’re feeling more adventurous, but all were delicious!

I drove all the way from Raleigh just to visit this shop, after one of the daily emails highlighting local shops for hot cocoa. Downtown Hillsborough is quite cute, and Matthew’s fits right in.
I was a little surprised to see that they do not have any other milk options for their beverages. No soy, almond, or lactose free «milks» for lattes or cocoa. Even though that was a disappointment, the cocoa was not. The spicy cocoa with homemade marshmallows was amazing.
I did not try the chocolates, however there was quite a large selection, and something for everyone’s palate. I will be making another trip to taste my way through the shop.

Love their Cardamom Hot Chocolate! When the winter season hits I run to the store to stock up. The chocolate truffles/​delights are also really good.

This place is transcendentally decadent in every way. The cream chocolates have a complex of flavors that are at once bold and subtle. Do yourself a favor: order up on e of his root beers.
Yes, the chocolates are expensive. They should be. You are paying for absolutely tip-​top quality. Now bring some home to your sweetie and earn big points.

This chocolate shop is reason enough to visit Hillsborough. It is filled with locally made truffles, chocolate bark, bars, pieces, gelato, desserts and both hot and cold drinks. I purchased homemade marshmallows covered in chocolate (delicious!) and an iced coffee with an ice cube made of coffee — genius! They have a few tables both inside and out. Service is very friendly. I will be back on my next visit to this cute town.

Wow! This place completely blew us away with it’s incredible décor, great chocolates and gelato, and the most friendly staff we have met in a long time.
When you walk in to Matthew’s Chocolates, it’s like taking a trip to New Orleans or Savannah or for that matter, the land of Willy Wonka. The style and décor of this place, with it’s rich plum tones, and immaculately painted diamond patterned walls is unbelievable. Not to mention, I really loved the movie poster for the Johnny Depp movie, «Chocolat» on the front door entrance wall. Nice touch. Seriously, the owner outdid himself with his lavish decorating talents. If this guy isn’t an interior decorator, he should be.
I also liked the chalk board selections, which were written out in easy to read font along the back walls behind the counter space. Everything matched incredibly well to the décor. It was like checking in to a really cool, hip hotel, and getting ready for your turn down service chocolates. Very warm and inviting.
We chose some hand-​dipped dark chocolate pineapple slices and banana pudding gelato. Oh my gosh, both selections were extraordinary. I wanted to try the decadent Nutella gelato, but held back… this time. We will definitely be back.

Look, I’m not a chocolate snob, okay? I can, however, recognize great chocolate when I taste it. Matthew’s chocolates are top notch! Plus, they’re willing to put up with me and my family, even when we’re being extra sassy.

Dessert for Lunch or before Lunch is fine with me, this time I’m eating Lunch First! Lunch: : Blueberry Sorbet! The person who Crafted this was a Master! Second Course — LUNA Rhubarb Lime Popsicle! Both were Fantastic!
Dessert:: Budha Showed up and got his head bitten off, not before I rubbed his stomach, hope I did not lose my religion on that one! Buddha Delight — five-​Spice and Sesame Croquant in Dark Belgium Chocolate, 2.)Fantastic Peanut butter Hazelnut wrapped in Chocolate, makes it a lot harder to eat other Chocolate with Peanut Butter! 3.) 70% Dark Belgian Chocolate infused with Bourbon Vanilla. 4.) Hot Cocoa Truffle. 5.) Vanilla Butter cream. 6.) Chocolate Butter cream Cardamom! All of these Chocolates were FANTASTIC!
This place is Very cool looking on the inside! Very Comfortable and the Lady working here made the experience even nicer! The products here are so good I would have given this place Six Unilocal Stars not matter what level of service provided! So it was nice that the Service is STELLAR!

I came to NC to visit a boyfriend who at that time of the day was at baseball pre-​game practice… So i took my white ford focus rental car and started driving…
And guess what. It started to rain like a mthrfckr and i wanted to stop and smoke. So. there i was… in Hillsborough…
Quaint little downtown area with some artsy boutiques. Went to one store and they suggested that i walk two stores down and buy myself a treat.
Who in their right mind will say No to Chocolates during an out of state vacation? Definitely not Moi.
Okay. I ended up buying $ 29 worth of goodies which i brought back home to California.
The smoothest homemade milk chocolate bar I’ve ever had.
The white chocolate chips that were supposedly for baking cookies… were sooo good, my family snacked on them like potato chips.
The chocolate dipped home-​made marshmallows are soooo gooooood.
Dark Chocolate is to Die For. (hey. it’s good for the heart)
There’s also one that had chocolate blueberries in ‘em. Loved that combo.
