The Fallout Shelter

This is a decent store, but with their store hours, I don’t stop here frequently. It seems that any time I’m in the area, they are closed.

Update: Well, we happened to be walking by when they were open. First time ever. Nothing special. Least interesting comic store I’ve ever been in. Not a big selection. You can get your new major titles here. Staff seemed friendly but this is really not a destination, and still disappointed at the narrow and unreliable hours.
Original review: One star for the cool batman logo outside. That’s the farthest I’ve ever got when trying to see the inside of this store. We came once, twice, thrice… not at any unusual time… but it was just never open. Okay, they don’t have the most convenient hours. Let’s go when we’re absolutely positively sure we’re within one of the smallish windows they say they’ll actually be open. Nope. We were waiting, as was someone else outside the store. Dark. Maybe later. We drove by: nope, still not open. She was still looking in the window hoping someone might show. Not really sure how a business that is closed all the time is still in business. Maybe they’re not and the rent has been pre-​paid for two years? In any case, we’re done trying.

my first time there, the guy behind the register was useless. i don’t know if it’s bc i’m a woman or he’s just lazy but i had to find what i wanted on my own since he THOUGHT ‘they were sold out’. they weren’t. how abt you get off the chair and try checking, buddy? i’m one of those people who doesn’t like having lots of bills in her wallet lol, so when my total came to $ 26.73 and i gave him $ 31.75 (hoping to get a $ 5 bill instead of five $ 1bills), he just looked at me and said ‘i don’t think this is going to come out to anything”. instead of rolling my eyes and telling him to just punch in the damn numbers, i said nothing and simply waited. when my change came to $ 5.02 he said, ‘OH! i guess it did. huh…’ very condescending. then he laughed and said he was giving me singles anyway! i almost bitched him out right there but waited to curse him out til i was walking back to my car. i’m sure i looked crazy. i wanted to give the shop another chance so, despite feeling unwelcome, i visited twice more with no other problems. probably due to douchebag’s absence. this place doesn’t seem to offer anything special for non-​gamers, so i definitely won’t be returning. tip: if you walk in for comics and see a fat bastard sitting behind the counter, go elsewhere. not even worth the hassle of finding a parking spot.

It’s nice to see a comic store in the area after waiting so many years. Been in there 2 or 3 times. They focus heavily on new stuff, with only a small selection of back issues. Undoubtedly they can order whatever you want, but in the age of the internet, why bother?
I give it 2 stars because it’s too small and because of the ultra-​geekiness I experienced recently.
While I love reading comics, I can not for the life of me understand the toy obsession or these low-​tech card games. To each his/​her own; however, I find it almost pornographic to enter a store and find grown men sitting around tables conducting «tournaments» with their little magic spell cards, talking time limits in nazily voices. One guy was blocking the back issue bin. I walked up and said, «Hey, do you mind if get in here?» I don’t think the chair moved an inch, nor did he seem to acknowledge my existence. He was either afraid of me or angry that I broke into his fantasy world. Couldn’t tell.
Remember the scene in «Eyes Wide Shut» where Tom Cruise sneaks into the secret sex orgy? Yeah, that’s how it felt. There’s an intimacy about it that should be conducted behind closed doors, not in a public store. And I think it’s a turnoff to casual or new readers who by happenstance walk in for a book or two.

If you like superhero comics or board games, this place could be your new neighborhood spot. If you’re into the weirder titles, small/​underground presses, or back issues, then you might not want to bother.
Another tip: This is a great place to meet a real life version of the Simpsons comic store guy.

Solid shop with a good selection. Most of the staff is friendly however there is one gentleman in particular that I find very condescending. I think he believes that due to the fact that I am a girl I don’t know what I am looking for despite the fact that I have been collecting comics for a solid 18 years or so. I just avoid the days he works other than that it has what I need and has fun little events that I enjoy. Definitely a convenient location which is the main reason I go. They always have what I am looking for so I have become pretty loyal to the shop.

I was really shocked at how rude the guys who work at this place are. I’ve been collecting comics since before I could read and the two times i have gone in here, I was treated like I was the biggest douche on the planet because I asked for tpb’s of comics that weren’t out yet.
The ultimate pretentious hipster comic store guys, I wouldn’t give them any money for anything. It’s sad because I live around the street and rather than deal with their shit, I order my comics online.

The Rundown: My local comic book store.
Good: Good selection of the mainstream comics. The inventory for Marvel, DC and Image comics is pretty well stocked. Not sure if they are still doing this, but there is a frequent buyer card for free monthly dice (basically an incentive for you to come back on a monthly basis, which works for me).
Bad: Some of the more obscure independent and Image comics may not be in stock. Not really going to take off points here because that’s a niche taste, and not really to most of the patrons that the store is catering to. Parking is on Route 27 of Highland Park, which can be tricky at times.
Ugly: None
Verdict: Good local comic shop for those in the New Brunswick area. Fairly friendly staff. No complaints.

I love Fallout Shelter, it is the best place to play magic in the area. The community here is the store’s strong point, everyone is friendly and the staff is great. They have events nearly every weeknight, and there’s always something going on the weekends. The store is also very LGBT-​friendly and it’s awesome to have a place for me and my boyfriend to play magic that isn’t full of homophobic and mysogynistic idiots. Fallout is home away from home, the geek hub where everybody knows your name.

I like this store. The staff is all around quite nice. One them has gotten to know me a bit I think, as far as my general area of interest on the graphic novels etc, he makes good suggestions for me. I do enjoy picking up new titles there, glad it’s in town.
Honestly, they got me into more than just the 1 story I was following, and I think that says something about a shop. They take the time to get into your head with you, a good shopping experience there nearly all the time. I like giving them money for cool stories and artwork.

As a magic player this place just makes a horrible impression. Most places let you in early to an event to socialize and meet the players. By early I’m not talking 3 hours, I mean 45 minutes.
Upon arriving «early» I was told I could not hang out at the location to wait for the event. It wasn’t even a special event, just the mtg standard they hold weekly. The kicker, twice I’ve been told, «come early!» And both times I was told to arrive an hour early.
This hasn’t been the only bad experience but one of many. This is just an example of the service to expect. If you play magic, take your business elsewhere. It’s hard to find in the Edison area but keep looking because this place isn’t worth the time.
Edit: changed the star rating, when a newcomer entered and eager to learn the staff was prompt to teach. I was impressed. MtG needs this as it’s the only way to gain new customers. Word of mouth and friend recruitment is its most valuable asset.

I visit this store fairly regularly for Friday Night Magic. The community here is very friendly and the store owner/​manager runs the events very well, especially since he’s the only employee. There’s been a slight issue with card supply lately, but other than that it’s the best place I’ve played at in central NJ.

Fallout Shelter, my local comic shop. I dare say it’s the biggest in the area, which is not to say very big.
Ron one of the staff workers there is great in regards to working with you on reservations and also giving his personal opinions on comics. Very knowledgeable especially if you are buying comics for the first time.
They also have board game nights and magic the gathering game nights.
Prices on comics are typical, you get 10% of if you reserve more than 10 issues per month. Might not be the highest discount you get but I believe in supporting the local economy and the people in there are friendly and helpful too, so that’s a plus.

The Fallout Shelter is the best games/​comics shop I’ve been in. The staff is friendly and helpful and the regulars are fun to game and chat with. Fallout Shelter is not just a store, it’s a community.

This shop is not a big comic shop but it is good for all new issues. I go here every week on for the new release issues. The place is calm and very well taken care off. The staff is nice and greet me as i come in. they have a reservation program to hold your comics which is great. The staff talk to you about issues they have read and recommend you some issues that you may like. They also carry games, action figures, posters and even variant covers. They also hold some game night but i haven’t attended those. They have some back issues but not that many but it doesn’t hurt the check them out they might have some that you might be looking for. I will keep going to this shop! If you collect comics check it out you may just like it

The Fallout Shelter… what’s there to say. For anything comic/​fanboy/​gaming/​RPG related, this is the place to go. They just opened up summer of ’08, I believe, and they seem to be doing good. The store is big, and they have tons of comics, from trades to weeklies to alternative graphic novels, even some art comix and manga. Plus some used video games, gamer/​RPG stuff, etc. The staff is nice, in your typical comic book guy kind of way. They do lots of gaming events, too, like Star Wars, Pokemon, and board games, though that’s not really my thing. Without a doubt the best comic shop in the area.
