When I finished my doctoral studies at Northwestern University, I wanted to help children who were not learning to read, a critical life skill. I set up a private practice here in Highland Park, IL.
Findings in my practice have borne out research in my studies, that student outcomes are far better when we begin instruction with the premise that all words break down into sounds. That’s the power of phonology, a component skill to reading.
For this reason Ravinia Reading Center staffs only Speech Language Pathologists, who are trained to understand the small differences in sounds. When we are able to identify why a child can’t read a word, we can then teach to the root of the problem. That’s meaningful reading intervention, not rote memorization.
With this approach our students achieve measurable levels of reading fluency and gain skills that prepare them to handle the volume and complexity of words a life of reading has to offer.
Reading is a skill, and it can be taught!
