They were friendly and quick to respond to a phone call, and just as friendly in person at their store front.
I needed a steel key blank for an older BMW (E30 chassis) cut, and when they checked in person, it was determined they could do it. $ 10 was very reasonable given that most other locksmiths in the area told me they would not do so. They are now on my short list for any locksmith needs in the NoVA area.
The most important part: I took in a pretty worn and bent key, and what they cut worked perfectly.

These guys were prompt, professional and fast! They showed up within an hour and called me 30 minutes in advance to let me know they were arriving.
I don’t know if I should be concerned or impressed that they got into my car so quickly. I called around for prices and they were priced very reasonably.

I had a trailer-​hitch lock on my truck’s box-​end receiver for which, in the course of several moves in recent years, I had lost the keys. (Yeah, I know — pretty stupid on my part…) I had been to numerous locksmiths to try to either get it sawed off, or the lock picked. They all took one look at it and declined to assist, citing the hardened steel and other reasons the task would be difficult. THEN I finally found Spencer’s. I called before I drove the rig out there; they were friendly, polite, and professional. When I arrived, James had that lock picked and removed in 5 minutes, and only charged me 20 bucks. I cannot overemphasize the sense of relief I felt at finally having that old lock removed, and being able to tow a trailer again. (PLUS, I like the big sweet Yellow Labrador who lives/​hangs out at Spencer’s, although I didn’t catch his name.)

This is our second time using Spencer’s service. They were very responsive and efficient. We had a last minute schedule change and they were cool to accommodate us schedule. We will definitely hire them to change our locks again.

These guys were friendly on the phone and got me an appointment quickly. They showed up nearly on time (rare for a service call) — well, within the window they predicted, about an hour into it, which is fine.
Two people showed up to work on two doors. I was having new hardware installed, two deadbolts and knobs along with a regal looking new handle for the front door. They came in and instantly got to work, drilling and assembling. They even tightened up my door hinges and helped align things a little better than they were previously. The team was very friendly and professional. They do good work. And they were fast.
In fact, they were only here about 30 minutes. This is the cost breakdown from my receipt — mind you, I bought my own hardware and all they did was show up to install it (I had done some previous ones on my own and found it tough because no two doors or sets are exactly the same and sometimes require a bit of expertise to make the set you want work with the exterior door in question):
— $ 80 service call (standard fee for them to even show up… I’m not sure why it’s so high, given that they only had to come a few miles from Herndon and I’d think they would just build overhead into the labor rates)
— $ 125 labor (this works out to about a $ 31.25 hourly rate for each of the workers, which doesn’t seem that unreasonable)
TOTAL: $ 205 (Overall, this seems a tad steep for how long the job actually took and the fact that I didn’t have anything really nonstandard that they had to do. If you discount that the 80 bucks above is a service call fee, this would work out to $ 102.50 an hour to hire this company [or $ 51.25 per guy they sent]. But, it was $ 10 less than the $ 215 quote they gave me on the phone.)
Overall, they did a great job, they work fast and they are friendly and reliable. I would probably hire them again. But the $ 80 service call fee seems unnecessarily high, and I’m not even certain that they really needed to send two people out to do such a simple job.

Took some keys there Home Depot couldn’t make and these guys made them no problem. If you ever need keys made, come here.

I have a rental unit in Reston & have used Spencer’s Safe & Lock for my unit on various occasions (re-​key, lock broke, etc). It’s not by choice that I have used them at least 3 — 4 times, but every time they have been great!
Rich the technician is very knowledgeable, prompt and answers all my questions. Making appointments is seamless and usually can get you in the next day. Price wise I think it is crazy, but in comparison to other companies I guess it is average to others if not a little less.
Hoping that I don’t have to call a locksmith any time soon, but if necessary, it will definitely be Spencer’s.

I am all about supporting local, family –owned businesses, but this time Spencer’s lack of professionalism and rudeness could not go without an honest review.
When I went to get a copy of a my apartment key, they refused to make me a copy because they said that the key (with a huge Spencer sign and phone number encrypted) was not registered on their files. It should not be my fault that they lost the registration information. Perhaps they never even entered it in their system. They said that they could not verify that the apartment belonged to us.
Long story short, they finally offered to have it re-​keyed at a high price since the apartment is in DC (approx. $ 400). They also offered to do it during a holiday with an extra charge. Note aside — to re-​key they do not need to go to the apartment, they were just desperate to charge more. They could have done that at their shop.
When I called this morning to make the appointment for Monday (holiday), the same individual who attended me in person the previous day and gave me the estimate, refused to make the appointment stating that they don’t know who did the lock installation in the first place and that the boss is out of town. I thought they offered a ²⁴⁄₇ service. I am beyond frustrated and disappointed not only for their lack of professionalism but for how rudely I was treated over the phone. As a costumer, I feel abused and mistreated by someone yelling at me and not trusting my information.
Not only did they lose a costumer, but I will be reporting them to the Business Bureau. If they don’t have the information on file, they could have clearly come to DC and re-​keyed the locks and register everything again under their company. If, as they claim, they are not sure they did the job, then they clearly are authorizing ex-​employees to use their encrypted keys and products to run scam businesses on the side. Shame on them!

Lost a set of keys and needed 2 car keys cut and programmed. I refuse to give the money to the dealers and love local businesses. Spencer’s was great over the phone and in person. James really helped me out! Hopefully won’t lose my keys again but if i need a locksmith, these are my guys.

I went to Home Depot and they could not cut my keys. Found Spencer’s on Unilocal… they cut two copies of my Mitsubishi Eclipse 2007 key shells and charged $ 15 total. Service was efficient and satisfactory. If I had been greeted with a smile, I would have given 5 stars.

I called Spencer’s after calling a few other locksmiths in the area. They were cheerful, helpful, and prompt. They came immediately to help me unlock the trunk of my car where my keys were. Unfortunately, after sending two cars and spending 20minutes with me, we determined it would be impossible. They did not charge me, and when I offered them a tip for their trouble, they refused because they said they had not solved my problem. They gave me advice on next steps which was tremendously helpful.
If you are looking for an honest locksmith, look no further.

I emailed several lock companies for an estimate of changing the locks in my home since I very recently moved in and the Kwikset locks installed were very difficult if not impossible to open. Spencer’s was not the cheapest price, but they quoted me a very reasonable price for Schlage locks. I did not want the current locks replaced with Kwikset. I called the office and set up an appointment. They had to order the locks, but were still able to come out and perform the service just a couple of days after my call. They gave me a 4 hour window for service when I set up the appointment and as promised, Rick called about ½ hour before he arrived to let me know he was on his way. I really appreciate this courtesy as I have 2 indoor cats that I wanted to secure so they would not inadvertently run out the door. Rick was very professional and courteous. He changed the locks very quickly and made sure I was aware that the Schlage door handles were somewhat different from the Kwikset in that they would turn and open from the inside while still being locked (Kwikset knobs would not turn at all even from the inside if they are locked). I appreciated that as he probably saved me from locking myself outside on the deck. All the locks work smoothly and the service was completed in less than an hour. The price I paid was less than the original estimate. I would definitely recommend Spencer’s if you need the service of a locksmith.

Moved to the area and needed to have the locks on my condo re-​keyed after the renters moved out. Spencer’s was fast, reliable, showed up right on time, quickly changed out the locks for me and was affordable.
Very happy with my service and I’d definitely recommend them. They also do an Angie’s List discount of 10%.

Just moved to the area. Checked other locksmiths in the area and Spencer’s had the best prices with great reviews so I thought I should give them a try.
Spencer’s came on time to the appointment to rekey 4 doors (total of 6 locks). After one set for the basement was finished, I decided that I wanted it to be a different key than our main entrance. He didn’t charge extra for the extra work he had to do! He even gave us 2 sets of keys for free!
Excellent and prompt service from start to finish! Highly recommend!

First, this place actually exists, unlike the vast majority of locksmiths listed in the area. So that’s worth four stars right there.
Second… he’s there! There is one other locksmith with an actual storefront I found, and both times I drove by during business hours the lights were on but nobody was home, with no indication of when he might return.
Third, I got my lock rekeyed quickly at a fair cost, and he was very nice too.
If you’re looking for a mobile locksmith, there may be other perfectly good locksmiths around. But I would still recommend Spencer’s. If you’re holding something in your hand that you need to take in and get done, then this is your best and only choice.

Bought a new house, the keys we were given were bad copies of worse duplicates. Plus who knows who still had keys to the house… We needed to re-​key the locks. Found these guys on Angie’s list. Not inexpensive, rekeying our storm doors was $ 45 each door, and each standard lock/​normal dead bolt on the house was $ 25 each. There was also a $ 70 standard site visit fee, ouch! But the reviews on many of the other businesses in the area were, shall we say, a little nervous-​making since these dudes A. know where you live once you’ve used their services, and B. they pick locks/​have master lock opening skillz since that’s their job. You wanna reputable lock co when you get your locks changed and Spencer’s your dude for that. Well, actually I think his name was Neal, but the sentiment stands.
And of course, mere days later my toddling baby closed the door as I ran outside briefly and locked me out of the house, sheesh. I was going to have to call Spencer’s again but instead I figured how to scale a wall and open a tall window I’d left unlocked. I don’t recommend that, ow. I think I’d rather call Spencer except for that whole pesky ‘have kids under the age of 3 inside alone and unsupervised oh bleeeeeeeeep!’ thing.
Still waiting on them to get back to me on if they can fix my shed door. Something about the cylinder fell out of the lock and something important was broken (we did it, not him). He took pics, said he’s check to see if they can get the parts and if he came out again, it would be part of the same ‘visit’ and we’d only have to pay labor and parts, not an additional site visit fee.

Have you ever gone for a walk after carefully closing the door behind only to discover you grabbed the car keys instead of the house keys? Congratulations! You’ve locked yourself out. That’s exactly what I did– a formidable nemesis. Of course I felt stupid, but there was no way around it. Called Spencer’s to find out how soon they’d arrive to rescue us.
Fortunately, this family run business sent Neal. Within 45 minutes he arrived in a small eco-​van and was as pleasant as he could be (didn’t make a single joke at my expense). After-​hours emergency calls are not inexpensive (over $ 100), but thankfully, things like this don’t happen often. I totally appreciated the quick rescue. Local, family-​owned and easy to work with. TIP: You have to show an ID before they start the process.

Time spent driving from my place, making a giant loop, then hunting up and down Spring Street looking for Spencer’s: fifteen minutes.
Time required for the folks here to fashion me up two perfectly functional duplicate keys: thirty seconds.
For those that are as directionally challenged as I am, Sunset Hills turns into Spring Street. That would have shaved off a good ten minutes of driving right there.
You’ll find this shop on the south side of the road, nestled into a strip mall of various other businesses, the most notable of which was Mr. Pepperoni. I kind of want to try it out (regardless of the awful reviews) on the basis of its amazingly ridiculous name alone.
Anyway, with an in-​and-​out investment of $ 4.50 (plus tax) and two minutes, I walked out with exactly what I needed. Score.
