On average, Fancy Cats helps +1,000 cats each year. Since our inception in 1997, we have found loving homes for +15,000 cats. We often tell people we are the largest cat-centric rescue in the state. You can our check our numbers against any rescue or shelter at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and and Consumer Services Animal Reporting Website where all rescues are required to report information each year.
We provide adoption, rescue and education services by finding suitable lifetime homes for our cats, rescuing cats on death row at local shelters and educating the public on responsible pet ownership. We aspire to offer in-house spay and neuter services.
We live by our core values of integrity in all our dealings; compassion for all life; respect for our cats, our constituents and each other; and teamwork. We are responsive to our donors, adopters, volunteers and the public. Our volunteers and staff are recognized for their responsibility, dedication, knowledge and helpful service.
We provide these services for cats that would otherwise be euthanized, potential adopters, donors, local animal shelters, and our community.
History
Established in 1997.
Compassion spurred Catherine McCullough Awad to start Fancy Cats Rescue Team in 1997. Too many nice, healthy cats were being euthanized at the local shelter in Fairfax, Virginia simply because they did not have the capacity to keep cats past their initial hold period.
Instead of residents visiting the shelter only on Tues-Sat 10 – 5, Petsmart would call me and I would meet with the adopter and adopt out the cat.” Cathy was soon able to work it out with the county shelter to intake cats directly from them and show them at in Petsmart. «In order to work with Petsmart I needed to become a 501c3. So I did. Back then it was myself and my daughters. A full team of volunteers was a dream of mine. It gradually became reality.»
The brainstorm of a driven individual has evolved over the years into one of the largest rescue groups in northern Virginia. We are extremely proud that since our inception, by working with shelters and the public directly, we have successfully placed over 15,000 cats.
