The Grey Moss Inn Restaurant

This is the WORST place ever. DO NOT GO HERE. We went here for a mother’s day outing and my mother almost ended up in tears. My mother called ahead to make reservations in the main dining area. When we arrived they put us in a back room and did not apologize for the seating placement mistake they made which she specifically asked for and confirmed with whoever she spoke with on the phone. My father was hungry so we stayed anyway. My mother ordered a chicken which came out partially raw and not cooked. The staff insisted it was juice and said they would cook it more and serve it back to her. My mother lost her appetite and decided not to eat. Another person of the staff came back, insisted it was cooked but mentioned they took the meal off the bill again without apologizing. This was a rude and disrespectful experience.

Wow! I must say this is one of the better romantic venues in the Alamo City. The atmosphere is wonderful, the wine selection is awesome, the service is even BETTER, and the food is great.
They have abundant seating both inside and outside, but reservations are highly recommended.
The wine list is CRAZY HUGE! Lot’s of bottles to choose from starting at about the $ 25 range and going up to a couple of hundred dollars.
Guys, make it a classy move and order a bottle of wine for you and your date. The waiters serve it old school, by handing you the cork to smell and then serving you the first glass of wine before you approve it fit for your lady. Study up on wine etiquette and blow her socks off!
The only thing, and I mean the ONLY thing keeping them from five stars is that my steak could have used some sort of seasoning. I had the T-​Bone, and while it was a really high quality cut, it was just lacking that special seasoning.
Will I be back? You bet your ruby red slippers I will!

This place is very quaint and romantic. My boyfriend and I had a candle lite dinner and it was a lovely experience. Staff was great and welcoming. We both had the sirloin steak and it was huge so that was a plus. We were disappointed in the seasoning of the steak and felt that it was very plain or mediocre. The sides that came with it weren’t to our liking either but just our opinion. It is pricey but worth a stop in to try a different and unique place, pun intended.

This was our second trip to Grey Moss Inn. The nay sayers need to learn what a great dining experience should be. Every aspect of this meal was great. Service was spot on. Food was great. We never felt rushed and took our time to enjoy our meal. Came in early and were immediately seated. Enjoyed a cocktail while reviewing the wine list and deciding on our appetizer. Our entrée came a little faster than we expected but that was due to the fact that we were savoring our appetizer and cocktails. The oysters were perfect. Great taste and fried just right! I had the waiters special. Lobster was just right and so was my rib eye. My wife had prime rib and she said it was outstanding. You must go here for the experience of dining and great food. This is not some place where ten different servers bring out a different part of your meal to you. We were there for the better part of three hours for dinner. Already looking forward to our next trip to San Antonio and dinner at Grey Moss Inn!!!

This was our first experience here at GMI, and we chose the night before Valentine’s after many great reviews from family and friends. However, we didn’t feel our expectations were met.
Upon arrival, we were surprised at the exterior of the restaurant. It was somewhat hidden in a wooded area, but quaint and romantic. The stone patio had a romantic aura in the air.
We immediately smelled the steaks and other meats cooking outside on the fire pit, which were all intriguing. We were seated inside, although we regret not asking for outdoor seating because the outdoor area was beautiful. The indoors were cozy and very homely. The tables were tight and the room was very quiet as we could hear other couples conversation. Though we understand this is an intimate characteristic to a meal, we did not feel we had our own personal space.
Our server was very friendly though he seemed sporadic and unfocused. He was knowledgeable on the wine list and selection, but we felt neglected at times, as he didn’t even mention his name or light our candle until asked.
We arrived with a large appetite so we had the opportunity to experience much of their menu. We tried their lobster ravioli, oysters, escargot, lamb chops, and prime rib .
On the ravioli, the pasta was hard and overcooked but the lobster was delicious as well as the brown butter sauce.
The fried oysters were our personal favorite and were excellent. The sauces provided with the oysters however did not meet expectations and were more fast food than fine dining.
The escargot was a dish we tried for the first time. We do not feel we got an authentic experience with the dish because it was smothered in cheese and butter and was overpowered and unexpectedly bland.
The prime rib was served with a twice baked potato as was the lamb chops. The meat was delicious but did not taste any better than what you would find at a causal steak house.
Overall our experience was that the food was not great nor was the service for the price of the meal. We expected either fantastic service or fantastic food and our expectations were not met on both fronts. Ultimately, we felt that for the price of the meal we could have had a much more enjoyable valentines outing at just about any other restaurant with money to spare.

A definite San Antonio treasure tucked away in Grey Forest off of Scenic Loop Rd. A slightly more upscale dining experience with a fantastic wait staff that is very down to earth, personable, attentive and not pompous. something I fear at restaurants geared toward fine dining. Daniel really made dinner that much more enjoyable. I would come here for almost any occasion, small or large, and be accommodated quite comfortably.
You could keep reading and reading about me going on about the food, the history, the service but it is something you really need to experience for yourself. My one and only recommendation is stick with the wine selection. I’m very particular with dirty martinis and despite the Belvedere vodka complemented with house-​stuffed bleu cheese olives, I’ve had better.
Also, for those complaints I’ve read from guests of running out of certain menu items. you should take that as a sign of the menu being that fresh, seasonal and chef-​inspired. Enjoy the moment and what is being offered!

This was the first time I’ve ever been here and I don’t know what all the hoopla is about.
There was 14 of us and we were in a private little house with a fireplace and that was the best part.
Our waiter Scott was very good!
Our steaks were sent back twice because the were to under cooked and they ran out of their «famous» squash casserole. We got about 2 table spoons of that. They also ran out of their pork tenderloin, poor planning I supose.
When we were leaving and people were getting picked up from their job I suppose, we almost got ran over from idiots in the parking lot!
We didn’t go into the main house where most people are seated, so I can’t tell you about that or how romantic it is, but it’s way to pricy for the food and the grill cooks need training on how to cook a steak. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

Disappointing. The only thing that I can say was good was the atmosphere; Very Nice. From there it goes downhill. I should have gotten the hint early as we walked in. The hostess was bending over sweeping the floor and didn’t even notice that we were there. The steaks were chewy with a lot of fat and gristle. The wait staff is horrible; not just our waiter, but most were dressed as if they were going to sack groceries at Wal-​Mart rather than to wait tables: jeans, tennis shoes, wrinkled shirts etc. Our waiter was sporting a three day growth and had a dirty ace bandage wrapped around his wrist. I had to ask three times for a refill on water and my wife Never got the second glass of wine she ordered. The waiter actually dropped a plate on the table as he was clearing dishes. I told my wife that I had been there three times in one: first, only and last. What a shame! They have the potential to be a five-​star restaurant and are blowing it.

As good as it gets… My go-​to is Prime Rib as I can’t cook it myself. So I have had it hundreds of times. Our waiter warned me it was «different» and gave a good description and I am so glad I stuck with it! I have never had a more perfectly cooked and flavorful prime rib. Not what I expected at a totally empty restaurant that is only open 5 hours every evening. I would make that drive weekly just for the prime rib. And the best horseradish my pallet has ever savored. We were served perfect martinis and the wine selection was great. Wait staff was there when we needed them but did not interrupt our conversation every five minutes just to check on us. Our waiter was phenomenal.
Did I mentioned the incredible escargot? The delicious strawberry dessert? Incredible olive rolls and fresh bread and real butter?
We lingered over several courses, not leaving until closing time. The restaurant did get more full as the evening progressed but at no point did we feel rushed to leave. It was more like being entertained in someone’s home, comfortably enjoying exquisite food. Zero snob appeal which really sold it for me!

We always have a great dinning experience at Grey Moss Inn. The staff are always soo friendly and helpful. Especially Mary the Hostess and J.R. the Waiter. The steaks are always grilled to our liking. J.R. always gives us good wine recommendations. The atmosphere is soo peaceful and relaxing. We always recommend Grey Moss Inn to our friends.

My favorite restaurant in town! It’s not exactly in San Antonio, but close enough. Best steak I’ve ever had. The menu isn’t extensive, but it doesn’t need to be. Their house squash is delicious, and their jalapeño sour cream potato on the half shell is addictive. We have only had great waitstaff thus far. We have tried their pecan pie & chocolate pecan pie and both are delectable. My favorite meats are the Ribeye, Peppered Steak, & Prime Rib. Perfect date night spot. Quiet, romantic, unique restaurant. Reservations are best.

The escargot is the very best in town, steaks and chef specials are always tasty and unique. Consistently great food and wine. Ask for JR, he is great!

We visited Grey Moss Inn for restaurant week 2015. It was a Tuesday night and the restaurant wasn’t especially busy. This was also my first visit here and on arrival it is a very cozy dim lit restaurant with a nice seating area outside (when its not 100 degrees). We were seated immediately and some bread was brought over. Then we waited. Finished our bread and still no server. Eventually she showed up with a pitcher of water and menus. She then disappeared again. I had scoped out the menu online before arrival and had already set my mind on sticking to the restaurant week offerings. I wanted wine but was inundated with a rather absurd wine list. It was sheets and sheets of wines in no particular order, some laminated some not, some stapled — it was just too much and the prices for wines I had even tried before seemed a little too marked up. I decided on an Old Fashioned and my friend a gin rickey which they didn’t know how to make so gin and tonic it was. The drinks took a long time to come she actually brought them with the appetizers and the ice in them was more than ½ melted. Anyone who appreciates a cocktail knows that kills it. To be fair I heard another server tell his table they were short staffed and only had two servers for the night. In that case I wish management would have taken some initiative and helped out instead of allowing the service to slide.
Now lets get to what I’ll call the great redeemer, the food, as the service was already subpar. My appetizer was roasted Brussels with bacon and bleu cheese. It was absolutely delicious. Prepared perfectly and a great combination of flavors. My friend had the Maryland crab cake and said it was one the best she had had in a good while. Very meaty with not so much filler and some crab cakes can tend to be. I also ordered the tomatoes marie which I expected a little more from, on the menu it sounds like a medley of different tomatoes, but when it arrived with was three slices of tomatoes over greens. Not very exciting. Then came our main course; bacon wrapped filet cooked rare served with mushroom risotto and asparagus. This was incredible. The filet was juicy and tender and cooked perfectly. I wanted more. The risotto was very good too, not undercooked and the mushroom flavors came through wonderfully. You always win with me if you can get my steak right. They sure did. The dessert was a lemon cornmeal cake with strawberry sauce. It was just okay — I can go on about the filet but I wont :)
Overall the food was very good. Ambiance is very nice and quiet. Great date spot or getaway from the noise place. Service was lacking for a place touting themselves as fine dining but maybe we just got a bad night. The prices are high as well but after that filet I would pay for their steaks any day. I will definitely be back.

There are so many reviews from 5 star to 1 for this place. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The menu is dated, but how do you maintain historic menu items and not be dated?
Obviously it isn’t for everyone. I did feel there are better values at some of the high end restaurants in the area. Dinner for four with wine and gratuity was $ 200. At $ 150 I probably would give it 5 stars.
The service we received on a slow night was excellent.

Cute place that has been around since 1929. Lots of history and tradition. AND great good. Several have posted about slow service, but from my perspective you come here for a dining experience (not a a quick in n out). Glad we came here and would come back. Service was great. Server was spot on in regards to menu suggestions. HUGE (and reasonable) wine menu.

We absolutely enjoyed every aspect of this meal! The service was spot on. Not overly bearing but intrusive enough to know we were cared for. Our food was well prepared and tasty. Despite the reviews I read on Unilocal before making a reservation we still wanted to try this place out. My wife and I have driven by many times over the years. We both agreed that it was the right choice. It’s been a long time since we experienced a meal like this. Steak and lobster for me. Delicious! Steak for her and she said it was spot on. Maybe it gets hectic on special occasions but for us? A perfect date night.

Just left. We came here to celebrate our friend’s 30^th birthday on a double date. We had a reservation for four, and I’ll admit we are all foodies (by this point). We love going out to eat. I was so disappointed as my fiancé made the suggestion to try it out. We should have just gone to Biga On the Banks downtown instead, for the price. It ended up being about the same price ~$ 100 a couple.
The location is in the middle of nowhere, and cell service is spotty but not a big deal; we came for the food! The place is older, and surrounded by nature. There were several deer as we left. That was the highlight.
The decoration was certainly old fashioned, with a duck, chicken, and rabbit figurines. Then there are also angel figures and china plates adorning the wall. Oh, and there’s a big chunky, melting candle on every table. The lighting is far too dim for a restaurant. I understand romantic dim lighting, but this darkness was ridiculous. We couldn’t see the food.
Immediately, we were a bit irritated as service took a while to address us (which gave us plenty of time to gawk at the décor), but I suppose what did it for the birthday boy was our waiter took his girlfriend’s & my appetizer order and then immediately turned while saying «I’ll put that right in» all perky as my fiancé sat there with his mouth half open about to order his appetizer. When the waiter came back, we ordered the remaining appetizer but our buddy decided he didn’t want an appetizer anymore. I’m sure he wasn’t intentionally bring a sub-​par server, but I worked in the food service before, and I’ve had better service at Jason’s Deli than here.
Now, the food. God, the food! It was dreadful. We were all eager to see what olive twists were, and it is sandwich bread (complete with crust) rolled around olives and toasted. That’s not a thing. Let’s not make it one. The appetizers we ordered were as follows– oysters that were heavily breaded and fried, which was okay, but far too salty, and way too much breading. The mussels were in a poorly seasoned lemon sauce, and I’d bet they are frozen. I love seafood, but this was nasty. My fiancé had the quail, and there was some kind of sauce on top that tasted burnt, but the quail itself was fine.
My fiancé & I got the smoked prime steak. It was okay, but the squash au gratin would have been a better fit at a Mexican restaurant than as a side dish for steak. It tasted like an enchilada dip I’ve had, but weird with my dish. Our friend & his lady got the «choice» filet, & the strip. The strip was supposed to be medium rare, & of course, it was cooked incorrectly (I’d say closer to medium well); the quail on the side left completely untouched. His lady’s filet looked to be cooked correctly, but the outside was charred, and the plate had likely been under a heat source. It was such a disappointing night.
There’s more I could write about the service and the food, although to our waiter’s credit, my mussels were removed from the ticket. Also, the lack of pouring out the wine for a person who bought a bottle was strange as many other establishments do that, including casual places. I found it concerning our waiter didn’t have the specials memorized, and not once was a dish explained when brought to the table. The plating of the food is clearly not a priority. It’s just not up to par to what other equally priced place offer. Just skip over this. I wish we did.
Edit– upon coming home and being able to see the filet in proper lighting, it was not cooked correctly. Most likely it was cooked at too high of a temperature.
Maybe Gordon Ramsey can come and help out the décor, the plating, the service, and the food.

Delicious food on regular nights & great events that pair wine & food; how can you go wrong… (Answer: you cannot!)

This place is amazing, from the owner, the staff, the ambiance, and last but not least… the food! Top notch. Hands down one of the best steak houses ive ever been to. The restaurant has been in operation since 1929 and for good reason. My wife amd i had a waiter by the namenof richard, amd i must say… he knew his stuff, and was on point! For the perfect date night i recommend this spot.

I will say my complaints first and then tell you how good the food was.
First– we called to make a reservation, was put on hold for an eternity. We hung up and called back, the phone was continuously off the hook. So we literally had to drive there (being Mother’s Day and all) to make this reservation for the evening. The interesting part is that we overheard someone else complaining about the same thing but she said it happened to her earlier in the day. So it looks like this is a practice for this establishment.
So moving onto the service. It’s an understatement saying that it’s SLOW. Our reservations were at 7. We got our food at 8:30. No joke. The waiter (Daniel) kept apologizing that he was SO tired and SO busy– but honestly it wasn’t all that busy. He forgot about our drinks, my wine, and replenishing water regularly.
Speaking of wine… I ordered an Italian wine. The whole bottle. I work in the wine industry so I know my stuff. (At least more than most) I asked what temperature it’s kept at. He had no idea but told me it’s at a «constant temperature» and then proceeded to tell me the flavors of my «French» wine all the way up to the flavor of a «French wood». It was an Italian Barbera. He was full of crap.
The hostess is the manager as it later came out. She seemed stressed, frazzled and disorganized, apparently doing the job of many. Had I not known that, I would have thought she was just bitchy.
Ok– now to the food. It was pretty fantastic! The filet mignon was great, we had the sword wish and free range chicken– all delicious choices. The desserts were ok– not anything to call home about. But nonetheless I was still impressed.
Would I go back? Probably not. We went here with a reservation so we could avoid the wait at franchise restaurants, but friends were in and out while we were still waiting for our food. Despite it being Mother’s Day– it wasn’t busy enough to justify the delay.

We won’t be back. The special Valentines day dinner menu they presented had a Wagyu steak listed. I should have known that there was something off when it was listed at $ 42.
What was brought to my table was not even in the same classification of Wagyu. A true Wagyu steak should be tender enough that a knife would not be needed. It should almost melt in your mouth thanks to the high degree of marbling (should be in the 20−25%). What I received was a usda «good» sirloin. It was not tender, it did not melt in my mouth, had little to no marbling (6−10% is usually required for a steak to be graded as a prime cut.
The poor couple next to us watched several coupke who came in later than they did… some more than an hour later, were done with their meals and they had not seen anything yet. They said they had been there for 2 hours.
I understand that 14 Feb is a busy day for dinning establishments. I expected that service would possibly be a little on the slow side, but that couple was way beyond patient. I think that they got a free dessert… kind of a joke for a place with this reputation to offer a free dessert.
I sent the steak back after a visual inspection, a tenderness test and a taste. A steak from Walmart would have been better quality.
They did remove the item from my bill, so I can not complain about that, but I would have thought that a manager or the chef even would have come out to explain the reason I was presented with a sub part quality steak, but no. I did receive a sorry from the waitress. She asked if I would like something else, but I declined as I did not want to wait 2 hours like the couple next to us.
Was really hoping this would be a special dinner, but it was pretty much a disaster thanks to the Grey Moss Inn.
I did not punish my waitress for the poor performance of the chef/​manager. She was given a 20% tip on what the total bill would have been.

My wife and I had a great Halloween meal at Grey Moss Inn. This place has been around since 1929 and, if you’re the believing type, is haunted. Now personally, I don’t buy into all that haunted talk but as soon as my wife and I stepped out of the car we were greeted by an all-​black cat, Jack, as we learned a few moments later.
If you like history and good food, this may be just the place for you. Nestled amongst the trees in Grey Forest, Texas, this restaurant offers traditional American fare featuring steaks cooked over an open-​charcoal pit. you can elect to sit outside and dine alfresco or venture into a very eclectic indoor dining area with tables adorned with huge candles made from melting one on top of the next.
The wine list boasts over 600 wines of which my wife tried one — a Merlot. I opted for a more brew, El Hefe Hefeweizen. She enjoyed her wine and the beer complemented my steak very well.
We started with their famous Grey Moss Inn oysters which are lightly breaded, fried, and topped with a drizzle of sauce and what appeared to be scallions. We also ordered the Chef Special salad. The oysters were delicious and not at all overly breaded or oily. I would recommend eating them hot. The salads were a bit pedestrian but the dressing, a French-​styled Ranch dressing was very tasty.
My wife ordered the fish of the day which was an almond-​crusted red fish with a ham and leek wild rice, and beans. I opted for the Porterhouse steak which came with a potato of the half shell, and their squash au gratin.
My wife was quite impressed with the fish. She said it had a very delicate taste but that the almond-​crusted exterior and light sauce was great. She even liked the wild rice even though it had a bit of a kick to it. My steak was also very good — a 12oz boneless Porterhouse with that distinctive flavor that comes for being cooked over charcoal — the good charcoal. The potato on the half shell appeared to be a baked potato with the potato taken out of the skins, mashed and seasoned, then put back into one half of the potato’s skin and then baked. It too had a kick but was quite tasty. The squash au gratin was so-​so in my opinion as I found it to be a tad mushy and overly saucy.
We finished the meal with a piece of their carrot cake and some hot tea. The carrot cake was fairly traditional but the nuts in the cake were only roughly chopped so the cake was chunky. We both liked it quite a lot.
Lastly, the service was great. the GM that greeted us was very cordial and pleasant to speak with. Our waitress, while young and new at her job, did a fine job explaining the various options and was attentive without being intrusive. While we both very much enjoyed our meal, the Grey Moss Inn is a bit on the expensive side so an immediate return seems unlikely. This is a place we will return to but for a special occasion.

This place is just wonderful and beautiful! This little place is tucked in down a long winding road and you may just miss it so keep your eyes open! It is so quaint and romantic too! Did I mention the food??? Oh yeah, it’s amazing!!! Obviously very fresh, made from scratch and beautifully presented! We ordered a bottle of wine which was opened properly at our table and kept in a chilled container. The service was fantastic and we were not rushed at all so we were able to talk, eat and take our time. We thoroughly both enjoyed our food. The atmosphere is very inviting as well. This would make a wonderful and romantic anniversary dinner or to celebrate an event.

Love love this place!!! Probably my favorite place in San Antonio! Where do I start the location is awesome the service was amazing! The food is so good and the story behind this place is amazing… have them tell you it! sit outside and enjoy the amazing ambince

We visited Grey Moss on Tuesday night this week … 7 PM reservation… we were on time and seated immediately in a nice cozy corner table with a candle they has been there for probably 50 years… Barb Produced our groupon to the waitress … And the fun began …
Barb had the oyster appetizer and I had the wild game sausage… Barb had the lobster tail and I had the prime rib… with the twice baked potatoes ;)
We had extravagant deserts … With great French pressed coffee. The service was outstanding and complimented outstanding food … I think they have a awesome menu… Their food is equal to any other restaurant in the San Antonio area.

I’ve been eating at Grey Moss Inn for over 30 years and have avoided writing anything negative over the last year and half because I hoped things would improve but after tonight, I have given up hope.
GMI has been the place to go for outdoor dining in a casual atmosphere where you will feel as comfortable in shorts as in a tux although I suggest something in between. The food has never been the #1 reason for going but for years it was very good. Sadly, after what I think was probably a change in either management or ownership or perhaps both, things just continue to go down hill.
When we arrived, the older lady who I think was the manager was grousing about other customers in front of us and didn’t offer a smile or a Welcome. Fortunately the other staff is much more friendly. In fact, as the evening continued, we heard several of the staff apologizing for a range of problems.
The old favorites like Tomatoes Marie, the sausage and the shimp appetizers were all good but I truly believe that they have lost the ability to season and make a steak. Keep in mind that they never served or advertised prime cuts bit I think that they have dropped down to Good and maybe Choice if you are lucky. The most unfortunate part of the night occurred when everyone at the table had a steak issue. One filet was dry and overcooked, another steak was very undercooked and the special (a chicken fried KC Strip) was grey and fell apart. Keep in mind, GMI used to serve a steak as close to what you’d get in your backyard as anyone and now it tastes like food cooked on a Joe Foreman grille at HEB.
After returning one filet, the manager brought it back to the table and argued that it was cooked correctly. Sadly, it wasn’t our steak. Another came back after everyone had finished their meals and this one was cooked on the outside and bloody raw on the inside. It was comped with apologies and excuses but one in our party ended up with no dinner steak.
I know that they are training a new cook and we could tell by the results that the fire was too hot resulting in a cooked exterior and raw interiors. Perhaps more training and over site is required but again, this has been happening over the last year and a half and I don’t see any improvements.
It is sad that this old haunt is going to have to be taken off our list for visitors and clients. We miss the old service, quality and attitude.
