great little bookstore. the family that runs it is super friendly. i can go in there to browse for hours and no one is rushing you out the door. amazes me that big chain stores use starbucks to lure customers in, but this place doesn’t do that. their friendly service is enough to get me in there once or twice a week.

I love coming here they have a great selection, are always wiling to recommend a book and can order hard to find or older print books. I live a few towns away but work in Healdsburg and make it a point to shop at this bookstore because they go the extra mile and are a pleasure to buy from

Levin&Company is a fascinating little nook. Unlike many bookstores, they have an array of vinyl records, an abundance of CD albums… and an upstairs art gallery. For such a small space, they have amazing variety. If you’re looking for books about the history of the Oscars, science fiction entertainment from the SyFy Channel, or Tolstoy novellas, this is the ideal place to go. It’s slightly pricey, but this is Healdsburg. A pleasant, quiet place.

Bookstores are hard to come by where I live. That’s why it was such a treat to walk into this quiant, little bookstore. I loved the wooden floors and the quiet power of the books as you walk in. New releases are strategically placed at the front of the store (naturally).
Prices are a little expensive but what else do you expect from an independent book store. Support the small business!

This looked like a pretty nice indie bookstore when I stopped in this morning. I was planning to browse and buy until I heard an unexpected, but queasily familiar, clipping sound. Yes, with 3 customers in the shop, the older woman working behind the counter was CLIPPING HER NAILS right by the register. It’s gross when people do this on the subway, but at work? In a retail environment, with customers around? YUCK.

I love this little local, independently-​owned book store. Aaron is always available to help me pick out a new book, and remembers from one browse to the next what I like to read and will offer suggestions based on that. This is SO refreshing in an era in which big-​box and chain bookstore employees seem to have almost no actual book knowledge whatsoever, let alone the ability for recommendation.
The rest of the family and staff are always perfectly pleasant, not at all pushy which I appreciate, and are always willing to answer any off-​the-​wall questions or requests I have. I’m so happy they’re still around to sell real-​live books to me :-)

***This is a local, independent bookstore and it is a decent one; they have a good variety of current paperbacks and quite a few books on Napa Valley and Sonoma County (though I think the other nearby and bigger bookstore has a better selection of local travel material); service seems pleasant***

Great people! Very helpful. Positive cosy atmosphere in the store. If they don’t have it, they order for you with quick results. I have been shopping here for years and love to support this long-​standing local business, owned and run by locals.

My wife and I have been avid fans of Levin & Co for more than 20 years. We’re particularly impressed that they have been able to stock such a diverse and comprehensive array of books for so long because their customer base is much smaller than many out-​of-​area visitors imagine. The town population of Healdsburg, despite the weekend flood of folks seekling «the country life,» is only around 11,000.
As for the friendly-​unfriendly conversation, I don’t want a bookseller jumping in front of me before I’m ready to purchase or, more likely, ask about this or that author. Whenever we are ready to check out, the service throughout our more than 200 visits since the early ‘90s has been uniformly polite and professional.

Such a wonderful place! Good selection, nice layout, you can pleasantly get lost in all the various areas, really helpful and knowledgeable and offered good assistance. In a world full of corporate Barnes and Noble type bookstores, this is much more personal, intimate and people who enjoy what they do, not like the employees of the above mentioned place as well as any huge stock driven company. Can’t wait to return, unfortunately where I live, there are no small family owned places hardly anywhere! Thanks so much!

Keith C. can never resist the lure of an independent bookstore, so when we wandered by Levin and Co yesterday, I knew we’d be hanging out for a while. Not that I minded at all, since I can always use a new cookbook or two.
We made our way through pretty much every section in the store. They had a small but wide variety of books – perfect for a morning of discovering new reads. I was particularly impressed by how up-​to-​date the travel and tech books were, since even chain stores have a hard time clearing last year’s books off the shelves. No Adobe CS4 or 2010 Lonely Planet guides here!
After an hour, we headed to the checkout. Keith struck up a conversation with the guy at the register about the stuffed Michigan J Frog sitting on the counter (exchanging a few notes of «Hello! Ma Baby» in the process), and I complimented their awesome book selection. We might have chatted with him about the store a bit more, were it not for the line forming behind us.
Total damage for five books? ~$ 140. Expensive? Maybe, but paying full retail is a small price to pay to support a local business and keep bookstores around just a little bit longer. We’ll definitely come back.

I guess we should be happy that book stores still exist, but the unfriendly, unwelcoming attitude did not warm my heart to this store. I dont like to be grimaced at by an aging hippie, especially when I’m financing her berets and earth shoes. The same books were available at Copperfields with a much friendlier staff.

Levin and Company is a small– to medium-​sized bookstore with an excellent selection of books for its size. You can always find an especially good selection of new books and bestsellers at the main tables, in both hardback and soft cover. They have a good selection of fiction and non-​fiction alike, and a fabulous children’s selection. If mystery is your cup of tea, you will find a wide selection. They also have plenty of travel books, large-​format coffee table books with beautiful images, as well as building/​landscaping and cookbooks. In addition there are plenty of CDs in many genres (keep in mind it’s not a music store though) and some greeting cards. The entire store is well-​organized, well-​lit, and comfortable (and I LOVE the creaking hardwood floors!).
Levin and Company is a new-​book bookstore. If you come in expecting a funky and idiosyncratic used bookstore, you will be disappointed. Sorry, but that’s just not very Healdsburg (unfortunately). Get over it! Go there for gifts for yourself and others, and to keep up on current books.
Speaking of current books, the owners and staff are extremely well-​read people who are totally up on what’s happening in the book world. They love talking about books, and I have always found them to be entirely friendly – but like any good book store staff, they will not get in your face. Go ask them questions or strike up a conversation about books if you want to interact. PLUS: they will always special order books for you, and call you when they arrive. They even wrap.
Oh, and how could I forget! Check out the gorgeous and quirky animal portraits on the wall, done by a local artist. Ask about them too!
As a side note: I have to say, I’m surprised at the negative reviews here. I know, I know, «not Toyon.» Anyone who has lived in Healdsburg for a long time would be familiar with the Toyon vs. Levin and Co. faction warfare. (The stores themselves did not, to my mind, encourage this.) Sadly, Toyon is gone. Go support Levin and Company and content yourself with dog portraits instead of Dorothy.

LOVE this place — Aaron knows tons about music and they always have the latest books on hand. And of course, there’s an excellent children’s section with really unique stock — not all stores have a selection like they do.

I’ve found many treasures at Levin & Company over the years. They have a good selection of books and music and are always up on the latest releases. Great assortment of cookbooks and local interest reading. I’ve always found the staff to be very helpful.

Everyone at the bookstore will help you in any way they can. The book selection is great-​lots of cookbooks, design and they have a fairly large drama section which is usually so limited in other bookstores. Aaron knows his music and carries the best selection in town-​from classical to indie to folk and back again. The environment is wonderful and they are open late-​until 9 pm! It’s one of the only places in town that is open past 6 o’clock.

On holiday I purchased $ 200 of books and asked them to ship them to me. It wasn’t a problem when they took the money + some shipping charges. It’s 22 days later and I haven’t seen a thing.
I can confirm that they were not friendly, I can also add, they may not have the customer in mind even with a large transaction.

This is my favorite bookstore. They have a wonderful fiction selection, with stuff that you can’t find even at the much larger chain stores. It’s all quality stuff– they don’t carry the dreck.
The selection of music is great, too. They carry a lot of classic rock and roll, blues, and jazz and a small but good selection of international music. I have always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Even if I can’t remember the title or the author, they can usually track down the book I am looking for just by whatever clue I can remember.
What a wonderful place.

I have never been a particular fan of Levin & Company. I used to go in when I couldn’t find what I was looking for at Toyon and didn’t feel like waiting for an order. Sometimes I check out their used books rack outside, as I have gotten a few really good deals that way. (Actually, that’s how I picked up the paperback version of Michael Chabon’s «The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay.»)
I have always found Levin & Co. to be a little overpriced and unfriendly. The atmosphere has never seemed very welcoming to me and I’m not sure if it’s because it’s usually a little cold in there or it’s really quiet with the exception of the creaking floors or what. I do know that I can remember the staff being friendly only on two occasions despite having gone in there dozens upon dozens of times.
They have CD’s, a decent sized section on the Wine Country, cooking, fiction, and travel books. If you head up the stairs, there’s a nice little art gallery appropriately named Upstairs Art Gallery (

Pop in if you’re looking for something specific or if you’d like to pick up a book on the Wine Country.
Pass by if you’re looking for a welcoming bookstore where you can stay awhile and relax.
