Jake Moss Designs

Jake was the only landscape designer that really listened and heard our vision for the backyard. Most designers said yes but then ignored our very limited plants … Definitely the drought had us thinking mostly hardscapes… Which Jake worked with, suggesting materials…

We wanted to do some renovations on our yard and our friends referred us to Jake Moss because they were so happy with the work he did for them. We were also impressed when we heard that he and his brother Joel do a landscape redesign show for the DIY cable TV network called «Yardcore». Now, we too, are on the list of satisfied customers.
Jake is rare because he is creative and has a unique eye for design, but he also understands the realities of construction and landscaping. He strikes just the right balance between bringing an artistic vision to the project while making sure to develop ideas that first and foremost fit with the needs and preferences of the client.
On his first visit to our house, he immediately came up with a vision for the redesign that included custom landscape art (see photos 3 and 4 for what he did for us). We were blown away by his ideas, but the original design was outside of our budget. Jake was totally willing to work within our constraints and altered the design so that it would fit in our budget. He was highly organized and personally oversaw every step of the project and was highly responsive to all of our phone calls and emails. Jake’s team was professional and courteous, and we felt totally comfortable with them in the yard.
If you have a chance to work with Jake, do not hesitate to ask him to design something interesting. When he sketched out his idea for the «light wall» in our yard, I wasn’t sure how it would actually turn out. But once they put it together, it was gorgeous and created a vibe which brought all of the elements in our yard together. Our friends who recommended Jake had a similar experience. During his design of their yard, he spotted some wood that was pulled out of their house during their renovation. Jake reclaimed that wood and made a gorgeous outdoor dining table with it.
In addition to his design work, we were very impressed with Jake’s commitment to getting everything right. Needless to say, in any design project, there are unanticipated issues to come up. We appreciated that Jake was at the worksite proactively identifying these issues and coming up with effective solutions. A few weeks after the job was done, we found a couple of minor issues that we thought might create problems down the road. Without hesitation, he drove all the way back to Davis to fix them at no extra charge.
I should close by saying that in a project like this, it really helps to work with someone that you like. We loved talking with and interacting with Jake. He is an exceptionally talented guy, but he is also hard-​working and down-​to-​earth. His energy and enthusiasm made it a pleasure to work with him.

Jake Moss Designs completely redesigned our front and backyards. Jake’s creative eye blew us away. We would have never thought of a waterfall, large boulders and plush, low maintenance plants for our front yard. We certainly wouldn’t have thought of a backyard bar, a step up deck, and a gas firepit overlooking the outdoor movie screen. Watching Jake work is like watching an artist in action. He and Brandi treated our landscape project as if it was their own. They stayed within budget, they were efficient, and their final product was unique — an extention of our styles and personalities. I find myself checking out Jake’s latest projects online on a regular basis.

My husband and I turned to Jake to do a design for our backyard because we were attracted to his ideas with regards to reusing and recycling and making really cool things out of unusual materials.
His plans were all that we hoped for — Creative, Quirky, Out of the Box and yet esthetically INSPIRING! We were more than thrilled that he «got» us and created a design that was not only beautiful but totally in keeping with our style.
Due to some obstacles on our end we had to delay completion of the project for a bit, however we can’t wait to get started on phase 2!
