History

Established in 1972.

Our winery was founded in 1972 by David S. Stare.

Dave was bitten by the wine bug while traveling through the Loire Valley in France. He was determined to start his own château in France, however, after reading about he burgeoning wine industry in California, Dave decided to head west.

In 1971, he enrolled in special enology classes at UC Davis and on the weekends, spent time looking for property for his new winery. It was a Sunday afternoon drive in the Dry Creek Valley that caused Dave to stumble across a 55 acre run down prune orchard. Dave purchased the land on a hand shake deal and in 1972, broke ground on the winery.

Our first vintage was produced at Cuvasion winery in Napa and in 1973, we produced our first vintage of wine in our new cellar in the Dry Creek Valley.

Since our founding, we have always been known as a friendly winery, producing wines that are approachable, distinctive and most importantly, a value.

Meet the Business Owner

Kim Stare W.

Business Owner

As a small child, Kim Stare Wallace was wielding a shovel at her father’s side when he broke ground for Dry Creek Vineyard in 1972. She’s been passionate about the wine industry ever since. Kim has seen the California wine industry mature through its ups and downs and is determined that her family winery will stay in the family. Kim insists upon an unwavering focus on winemaking excellence.

After graduating magna cum laude from San Francisco State University, Kim began a career in the fashion industry that greatly helped build Dry Creek Vineyard’s dynamic brand. Eventually joining the winery in 1986 as Director of Marketing, one of her first achievements was the creation of nautical labels for Dry Creek Vineyard’s wines, an unprecedented move that has indelibly linked the winery to sailboats in consumers’ minds.

The success of her program was so visible that other wineries asked for her help. She obliged by starting her own consulting business, specializing in marketing and public re
