Ordered a small round pizza with a little extra sauce and sliced tomatoes on top. Ended up with diced tomatoes instead of sliced. But that’s not the main problem. Pizza had a «mystery» taste and/or aroma. Sauce and crust was sweeter than I like. Was there meat in the sauce? Maybe Italian sausage? That’s what it reminded me of. One of the most disappointing pizzas I’ve ever eaten. This was my first trip to Geno’s…and probably my last.

I was passing by and remembered that when I was at Primo’s last week I saw an ad for this place in Ferndale Friends and thought I’d check it out next time I wanted pizza. I stopped in and ordered a medium round pepperoni and a medium square veggie. The pepperoni was a little overdone but the pepperonis crisped up on the edges nicely and they use the smaller pepperonis that curl up… always a welcome surprise. The sauce is a little sweet but there wasn’t nearly enough of it leaving the pizza really dry. The crust was OK but I wasn’t blown away by either. The square, which I had high hopes for, was kind of doughy and had a little too much crust in ratio to sauce and toppings. BTW, they used canned mushrooms which is forgivable but the tomatoes on my veggie were also canned… I wasn’t a fan. On the other hand their Chicago style may be worth a second glance and I didn’t grab a pastie while I was their but I was really interested to see how they make them so maybe another time. Unfortunately I wasn’t converted to Geno’s based on what I tried but the service was really good here!

Two stars and the«meh, I’ve experienced better» directly describes this place. I have no complaints about the service or delivery but I do have complaints about the pizza. Yes, it was exactly what we ordered and it was ready when it was supposed to be but this pizza is not good. With a plethora of really good pizza places near us, this is just about one of the worst. The crust on the regular round is like cardboard – flavorless and chewy. Their pizza sauce is just on the tad too sickly sweet which leaves a strange aftertaste. I like BBQ chicken pizza but the BBQ sauce was off tasting and along with the cardboard like(a little too dark as well) crust, it just wasn’t a good experience. We also had the Chicago style but it was way too flavorless and loaded with that sickly sweet sauce. Loui’s is on the other side of town not 5 minutes away, get your deep dish from there, you can’t go wrong. This just isn’t my kind of pizza.

I’m not sure if my taste buds changed or they changed. I love this place but it seems like the last few times I ordered from here something was different with my pie. It’s a family joint so its always the same people making the pizza. I will try them again since they are one of the best in the area. The Chicago style pizza they make is a MUST try for any true pizza lover. Only bad thing I can say about this place is they are closed on Monday, so I’m giving a lower rate. Whats Monday Night Football without pizza? =[

If you want budget deep dish that does not taste like it was made with saw dust, then Geno’s is your place. Simply get a basic pepperoni pie and see for yourself. The two things that will stand out are the thick and flavorful slices of pepperoni and the sweet, but savory tomato sauce that makes Geno’s pies my choice for deep dish when I cannot go downtown to the original Pizza Papalis. We all know that the best deep dish in Detroit is there. I know folks like having a Papalis close to their suburban homes, but it just is not the same. Sorry. The only thing that sucks about Geno’s is that it is strictly a carry-out and delivery place. There are not many sit-down restaurants in Hazel Park anyway, but it would be nice to enjoy such an epic pizza chunk in a restaurant setting. Geno’s has the type of pizza that they could do us all some good by doing a little expansion. Heck, bring it to Grosse Pointe! I know I miss it!

So, there’s a million pizza joints in the U.S. so at times it can be difficult to discern the good from the bad. Geno’s in Hazel Park is definitely one of the good. Located on John R Rd, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Geno’s is how heavy the box was the first time I carried out a pie. Needless to say, Geno’s doesn’t front on the toppings and the deep dish pizza is well, thick, giving a freakish girth to the box. As far as the palate pleasing, Geno’s pizza has the perfect balance of crunchy crust and a breadiness. The toppings are fresh, the veggies never soggy, always crunchy. The sauce has a bit of a bit to it that briefly interrupts the sweetness. But folks, beware, if you’re not looking for this joint, you will pass it. I drove past Geno’s probably 50 times before I got word, that the tiny pizza place with the yellow awning was a hidden gem.
