Outside of Mexico, Mac’s Sports Bar is the scariest bar I have ever been in and I like bars. At no time did I feel invited or welcome. Located in section of Hayward the rest of the world has forgotten lays an even more unmemorable strip mall. The building is unkempt and the pavement is so bad and dirty that you notice how bad and dirty the pavement is. The malls other occupants speak to the socioeconomics of the neighborhood, a coin op laundry mat and a liquor store. The people milling about and smoking near the entrance to the bar is enough to keep most people away. I have no idea why they call it a sports bar. There is a TV that’s 20+ years old that I suppose could show sports. Sans the TV, there is nothing sporty about Mac’s. Stacked boxes of beer greet patrons upon entering the establishment. Without much of a stretch I speculate the delivery guy was too scared to go any further and the proprietor of the establishment is too lazy to put them away. The only thing of character is a rock wall that like everything else in the bar has seen better days. Unemployment, prison spells and abuse of all kinds are the badges the regulars bare. As one would expect the place is messy. There is sort of a back room that’s missing its Jodie Foster. My friend RJ and I went back months later because we really like to drink and reassure ourselves it was as awful as we remembered. I will undoubtedly go back again. The two biggest reasons are that RJ and I love the thrill the drinking dangerously and I would like to know Mac, if he exists. — Puddingstone
