Fairview Elementary School

My kids will begin this school very soon and I am curious as to what this school dynamic is. I am a very dedicated and hands on parent when it comes to my children’s education and I won’t let any teacher fool me with their fabricated stories about my children. So I’ve read on one of the reviews that teachers fabricate students’ grades. I do a lot of homework time at home and I will ensure that my children will learn consistently as I teach them at home. If there are any information that I may benefit from please provide them in response to this review as I would like reassurance that I have placed my children in a good school.

There is no doubt in my mind this is one of the worst Elementary Schools I’ve seen as a mother. Against my better judgment I allowed my ex husband to select this school for our son. HUGE mistake. In preschool his teacher asked me he was ready for first grade and to not have him go to kindergarten because he would be bored academically. Kindergarten is not mandatory but optional. In Fall 2012 he enrolled as kindergarten. Ms. McKenna a kindergarten teacher attempted to tell me our child was advanced, however, she didn’t feel he was mature enough to maintain amongst the first graders socially. I stood my ground on him going to first grade. After assessments is when the school told me I had to wait to see if he could be placed in first grade. I personally sat in his kindergarten class and assessed the curriculum was far too easy for him as his preschool had covered this material. I then requested to sit in a first grade class, where I made the determination our son could hands down handle the curriculum. My next step was to arrange for our son to sit in the first grade class for a day doing the actual first grade assignments and interacting with the first graders. It took roughly two months to finally have a meeting between the kindergarten teacher, first grade teacher, myself, ex husband and the principal (Mr. McGee at this time). Date of meeting was October 18, 2012. In so many words after acknowledging his academic readiness for first grade on the paper we signed the school said it’s not their issue if he doesn’t succeed. Great support huh? Moving forward, it’s school year 2013 – 14 and he’s in second grade. I volunteer on Wednesdays in the library to help almost two hours with two separate classes. One being my son’s.
On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 around 10:00 am I witnessed a teacher by the name of Ms. Collette grab my son in an inappropriate and aggressive manner. It is my belief she did not see me or know that I was a parent/​adult. The children were lined up to leave the library. Ms. Collette was walking up to get her two students who come to the library with my son’s class. I was standing next to my son and another child looking in the glass door of the library when I saw her from my peripheral grab him with force. I immediately made my presence known and said, I am his mother, please do not grab my child. I do not have a problem with discipline but do not grab my child. She agitatedly said to me did you see her rocking back and forth? (A little girl in front of my son). My son had not done anything «wrong» or inappropriate. I repeated myself about not grabbing my child. I followed my son’s class back to their room then went straight to the office to verbalize my complaint. Tina Lagdamen rambled about them changing their dicsipline policy the coming school year and that she’d have to get the teacher’s side of the story. I made it a point to put my complaint in writing which was forwarded to Mr. Melvin (the principal) who was NO help at all. I’m beyond enraged while they are casually addressing the situation.

Here is What every Parent Should KNOW and What I DID NOT like about the school:
My child was going to Fairview for 1^st Grade, however, in the last month of school we moved so I had to move my child to another school.
Through out the whole year my child Report card will come home as she is A+ student, Excellent in reading, Multiple certificates in Math. My child even received a certificate of student of the YEAR. Every time I will ask the teacher how is my child, The teacher will always claim my Child is one of the classroom’s top student. (Tell me which parent on earth does NOT like hearing that about their Child).
When I moved my child to another School District I WAS SHOCKED, they had my child take test to determine my child academic level… ONLY TO FIND OUT
My child is reading 37 words in a min, when she is supposed to be reading 53 words (According to the new School Teacher) Again when he old Teacher in Fairview was telling me her reading is perfect. { I did not know better as this is my first child}
WHICH MAKES ME HIGHLY BELIEVE Fairview Elementary Misleads Parents, Does not give correct Report Cards, makes Student Academic level DROP
AS for that this is a horrible school

We moved to Fairview about 6 months ago.
I do like this school. It is in a brand new building. It is clean, nice, organized, etc.
No complaints about staff.
My only complaint is about class size. 35 students in a 3^rd grad class? I realize this isn’t the schools fault.
It overwhelms my son and makes him feel lost in the crowd. We don’t get that one on one that we got and enjoyed at our last school.
The noise level in the classroom, was a hard adjustment for him. I realize that it’s sort of a Hayward thing. It affected his work for a while, as he just couldn’t hear directions when they were given. I think the teacher has since gotten it under better control.
After giving it some time, my son has adjusted and loves his school. He is back on track academically:)
