This place is great. The taqueria is a walk up, order at the counter type of place and there are comfortable seats inside the store! The food is delicious and their salsas are fresh and tasty. I had the nachos. Great portion, lots of toppings, nothing phony. all fresh. Their refried beans are great– totally taste home made. not canned. The tamale was good. I had to douse it in salsa because it was just slightly dry. but still very tasty. The grocery store is great. I especially love the guys at the back counter. They let me taste some of their salsas and were nice enough to double bag everything– I didn’t want it to get on my new car seats. Veggies are fresh, they have a great pan dulce area with all the yummie pastries. Great store for all of your Mexican goodies. and MORE!!!

You really can’t go wrong with the taqueria at Chavez Market! Hayward is lucky enough to have two locations now and this one on Mission is a bit closer to me. It’s worth the wait!

After scouring town looking for pre-made empanada shells, my girlfriend and I thankfully discovered this gem. This supermarket is well organized and has everything you need to make any latin cuisine. After purchasing the shells, we decided to grab some food at the taqueria because it smelled so good. The Chilaquiles were great. The tortillas were nice and crispy, not overly mushy like other places. The red sauce was clearly tomato based and had a nice zing to it. Atop the dish was a nice drizzle of Mexican crema and cotija cheese to make it that much better. Oh, the order also came with rice, beans, and a side of pico The beans were pinto and clearly made in house… nothing worse than beans from a can! The rice was good Mexican rice too! Rice tasted freshly made with whole grains, none of that mushy frozen kind that restaurants usually rely on. The cucumber water was… not what I expected. I expected more like a cucumber/limon blend but only got cucumber sugar water. The Chilaquiles were the real star here. Definitely going to Chavez from now on for all my Chilaquiles cravings!

I came into Chavez Market for grocery shopping! I had to stop at the Taqueria for lunch! I noticed the ladies in the back cooking in the back. I was surprised and grossed out to see her use her hands to touch the meat that was in the pot. She noticed that I had seen her make this error and she walked away! The owners should be aware that employees should not be using their bare hands touching meat! I asked the lady at the register if the manager was in and she said he was not in. I alerted her why the women did not wear gloves in the back. She stated they don’t wear gloves. I asked if they felt it was ok to to touché meat with their hands. She just looked at me!

Hidden gem in Hayward. Very solid Taqueria. Not a big fan of their fish tacos, but their super burrito is really good. What I do is order at the Taqueria. Then buy pastries at the bakery. Perfect dinner and dessert.(they also have flan). I feel 5 pounds heavier after this meal, but worth.

I’ve only been in here once before to buy a jalapeño pepper I think, so this was my first time experiencing their taqueria setup. I went on a Sunday, and was told over the phone that they were open til 8:45. They definitely are not – by the time I left around 7:30, they were packing it in, so not sure if they just do that due to the lack of patrons or they really close early. The grocery was still open though. So make sure to get there before 8pm to be safe. They also don’t wear gloves when preparing the food, I never really noticed this before, so not sure if its standard protocol or not(FWIW, I didn’t feel sick after eating it then and I don’t feel it now, and that was two days ago). I went with two burritos and a nacho. All super(includes guacamole, score) and all carne asada. They cut the beef up into strips in front of you like a sushi chef, and then give you heapings of portions and somehow manage to wrap it all tighter than a sleeping bag. A true art form to watch. It’s a little drier than the one I like off Huntwood, but at least the portions are monstrous. It also didn’t fall apart after one bite, meaning it wasn’t too soggy, which is a plus. Prices are comparable to other Mexican joints, so if you’re in a pinch(my normal spot was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday), try this place for their food, and even groceries. Small parking lot, but at least it’s off Mission and close to where I live(and right near some car dealerships, if you want to splurge even further after you stuff yourself with Mexican foodstuffs).

Nope. Got a burrito, wasn’t tasty at all. Oh not to mention the stomachache after eating it.

The good here is very fresh and delicious. I always get the chile relleno and I never am disappointed. The rice may be their weakest link but even at that is tasty. It’s a friendly place with excellent service from my experiences

The worst place to shop or eat, let me start with the restaurant, It is a disgrace, I ordered the Meat plate tempted by the picture which shows a plate with colorful ingredients like sour cream, Avocado, etc. The beef meat was chewy and looked so dry, it came with flavorless rice and bean, I asked the cashier the meal looks dry why there is no Guacamole or sour cream she said those are extra so they charged me extra 3 dollars for that, it cost me 15 $ in total it was the first time in my life I felt ripped off by a restaurant, The portion so small I left feeling more hungry, As for shopping everything they have on the shelves are double the price of KMart that you can find couple of intersections away on Mission and Harder, so just go there and save lot of money, The meats section is even worse. In conclusion, AVOIDTHISPLACEASMUCHASYOUCAN

I told my girlfriend about the Taqueria, so she wanted to go try it out. We walked in and stood in front of the glass front food service area to order. First off, NOBODYGREETEDUS! Where was the, «Welcome to Chavez Taqueria, can I take your order?» NOTHING. If they were busy, let us know, «We’ll be right with you». NOPE. Some young guy, 6’4″ tall completely ignored us. Then a lady behind us started speaking Spanish to him. He responded but AGAINNEVERMADEEYECONTACT. He served her BEFOREUS! Another employee, a young girl approximately 5’4″, apologized for the ignorance of her coworkers and asked us what we would like. The food was okay. I’ve had better there before. The TWOSTARS is for her acknowledging us. If she didn’t save the transaction, we would have scored a NEGATIVETWO. KUDOSYOUNGLADY. Young Sir, please re-read your customer service manual. My bf lives in hayward, and since he’s right across the street from the safeway, I typically go there whenever I’m staying with him and want to go grocery shopping. I’m planning on making shrimp tacos tonight, and just couldn’t get myself to buy the sad looking and neglected shrimp at the safeway, so i turned to Unilocal and found that Chavez had a good seafood section. Off I went. Was sooooo surprised to find a really well organized supermarket that not only had jumbo shrimp at a super competitive price, but also produce for more than half off the safeway(with club card!) price. I ended up filling up my shopping basket with all the ingredients I needed to make my tacos and mango salsa, and literally spent half as much as I would’ve spent at Safeway. I always knew Safeway was super overpriced, but wasn’t confident I could find another supermarket that offered one-stop shopping. Chavez, due to it’s hispanic flair, is notttt quite that place BUT I found 90% of what I needed here, which is enough of a value proposition for me. Also — I must talk about the checkout efficiency here. I went on a saturday afternoon aka prime time and there was NO line to speak of. Literally none. I was in and out in 15 – 20 minutes, which is a miracle. I love this place, and will gladly return!

I absolutely adore eating here! They are so clean and the food is so fresh and everything us always really tasty and I come here alot. That’s just the serving area. Everything else in the store is the same. They keep the place very clean and I come to the store often during their busiest hours but they move the lines along quickly and the sales people are always very friendly. My favorite menu item is the taco plate with barbacoa, it is a great price and very tasty. The crema and the fresh cheese is also really great to have at home.

Get food on the run and at an affordable price. I’ve passed by here so many times not thinking to stop and get something to eat. I mean it fresh it’s a supermarket, what more can I say.

This is the cleanest grocery store I have visited in Hayward. I was very, very impressed by the produce section especially. They do have just the basics and that is fine. The meat area was so spotless, which is difficult to do with the constant flow of customers. The employees were all very friendly. I was also impressed by the number of people constantly cleaning spaces that already seemed immaculate. I will definitely be returning to try the items at the Taqueria.

I had the $ 10.99 «combo meat plate» which should’ve been called ‘we found this crap in our toss-out bin, plate’. I was there on an eventless Thursday evening, and saw others waiting in line and was fooled. I’m sure hell will have a long line too. Speaking of which, i expected this«spicey beef» to be at least hot-ish. Nope. It was shit-ish. The meat bounced like a womans curler when he dropped it onto the cutting board. It was half gristle n half mystery meat. He dumped(good description) onions n cilantro on it and said, done. I would’v been better off, honest to God, going to Taco Bell or TB’s dumpster, than eating at this place. The tortillas weighed more than the rest of the meal, which still left me hungry and for something good, too. Another example of brown on brown kitchen violence. Even the dip who served me looked bland and under-everything, poor kid. He was smileless n probably ‘special’. God bless ‘those’ people. Don’t do this place to YOUR tastebuds! Learn from MY mistake here.

I’ve had a lot of great burritos, tacos, carne asada fries. But, this taqueria just missed it. It’s unfortunate that they overcooked the al pastor, but I did enjoy the fact that you can see it is freshly made. They do skimp out on your guc portions though. :(

Between the Chavez Supermarket on Tennyson St. and this particular one on Mission St., hands down I would go to this one! It’s brand new, a lot cleaner, the parking lot is not busy ATALL, and the employees seem to be a lot friendlier than at their Tennyson location.

Located in the old Smart n Final location on Mission Blvd. — a full service grocery store with Mexican bakery, butcher shop and a full menu taqueria –ALLLOCATEDINSIDE. Interior is clean, bright, and Welcoming. Security is present to keep control of loitering in the vicinity. A nice family environment. That aroma will make you hungry. It smells like Home in the taqueria area. Pleasant to see other nationalities with families dining here. I was raised on home cooked Mexican food, so I judge my visits on the flavor of the rice and frijoles. 5 stars here. Tamale plate here Taco plate for my wife. Loved every bite. Great flavor. Masa had great texture and flavor with a good amt of meat filling. Tacos were prepared with a load of fresh off the grill meat, fresh chopped onions and cilantro. We sat next to an Indian family who were raving of the flavor in their meals. A filipino couple beside us, and Latino family behind us. It was busy, yet the tables are spaced apart. Dinning area is clean and bussed regularly. The menu is typical, but the steam table is fresh and turn over of food looks appetizing. Yes That is Important. I used to live around the corner, so I am familiar with the neighborhood. I now live over the hill in the tri-valley. sometimes I drive over for Los Gallos, but I would go a bit further for groceries and take out for lunch and dinner. I have already recommended Chavez to many of my friends. Customer service is a big item nowadays. Especially with several Mexican joints on the same block. It is apparent that non-Latino families feel Welcomed and safe here at Chavez.

Inexpensive. Good selection. Great, fresh chips and salsas. The price of a fast food stop, but with waaaay better quality eats and twice the portion sizes. Their shrimp burritos are bomb! I always pick up a bag of their tortilla chips and some fresh salsa and guac, for parties and potlucks.
