Clown Burger Too

I am going to echo the «good, not great» that another poster said. I went there for the first time yesterday, and with as much as I have heard about them, I was expecting them to be fantastic. It is a friendly little joint with strange hours. The burgers are kinda small (like the size of a small hamburger at McDonald’s). The burgers as far as taste remind me of the burgers my mom made when I was a kid. Price wise, they are about the same as Whataburger. The «cash only» thing is a huge hinderance for me — I rarely carry cash.
So I would call this place average, and I may eat here again, but I am not going out of my way to go there. It is not a place I would take out of town guests, but I may pick up burgers from there in the future.

I have never had bad anything here. The building is old and no money was spent to update the carpet, but it’s clean.
The menu is simple; hamburgers and french fries. Home cut fries, thin sliced. The owner, Bill, comes in early each day and cuts them himself. They have hot dogs and corn dogs, nachos and bottled beverages.
The operation is simple and they take only cash.
They do have a few novelty items for sale, and for convince I pick up my Mexican vanilla from them also.

I still haven’t been able to try this place due to these insane weekday hours. For anyone who works a day job M-​F 9 – 6, like me, you are immediately losing business from. I have heard great thing about these burgers but I guess I’ll never know if they’re true. If the hours are extended or you consider doing a short dinner span, perhaps 5−7pm, I will amend my review and you business will be booming!

I had been wanting to try this place for at least a couple of years. I finally had an opportunity (when they were open). So, I gave it a shot today. «Good,» not «great.» There was absolutely nothing «wrong» with the food. But, having read so many reviews and waited so long, I probably had it over-​hyped in my mind.
Would I eat there again? Sure. Would I go out of my way to go there? Unlikely.

I am a huge fan of Clown Burger. If you like the traditional thin patty burger, you will be very pleased. I like to get a double cheeseburger with grilled onions. The fries here are the best in my opinion. The closest chain comparison is Griffs, but Clown is certainly better. Get there early, they sometimes run out of meat and close early.

Been going to Clown Burger for 30 years going back to the old Belknap days. Excellent burger, good flavor, killer fries and no frills. Just good burgers and fries. The atmosphere is a little strange to a first-​timer but those if us who remember the old place and are nostalgic for it will appreciate it, the rest, well you just have to get used to it. Super friendly staff and great burger joint must-​haves make this a worthy stop.

This place is great, I wish it was closer to my home. Love the food and decoration of the restaurant.

Leave the calorie counter at home. Don’t bother imagining that you will compensate your unhealthy choice with a salad. Clown burger is old-​school and very greasy. The single burger is delicious (and cheap too, around $ 2.50) and not too greasy, but it did flatten out during the trip home. It would probably be better at the restaurant. The chilli dog was delicious and perfectly chilli-​y. Odd word choice, I know, but you probably know what I’m talking about. Plenty of chilli, cheese and onions. The regular dog is pretty big, but Clown burger offers footlongs as well. Finally, the fries are just as described: greasy, crispy and amazing. Definitely check it out, even though the neighborhood is a little run-​down, Clown Burger has been around for 50 years, and I’m guessing it’ll probably outlast most of us.
Just try not to feel guilty afterward ;-)

Fries are well done — cooked dark and delicious. This is a very old school place. Can’t add a lot to previous reviews. Don’t expect any bean sprouts, just solid, greasy burgers and delicious fries.
There was an original Clown Burger which was, I think, on Belknap or Haltom Road, if my historic research and memory are accurate.

I’m still keeping it as a 4 star because of the erratic opening times though. They’re also not open on weekends it seems, which sucks because I work 5 days of the week, so when Saturday rolls around I am not able to have any :\

This is not the same Clown Burger I grew up with, the fries are the same but the burgers are much smaller than the originals.

I guess my expectations were too high by the raving and the fact that this has been a local burger joint around here forever. It must be great, right? It was OK. If I worked in the area, I might visit more often, but there’s hardly a reason for me to go out of my way to get here.
The burgers seemed good enough, but little on flavor, which is what I was hoping for. That old-​fashioned burger that they say they hearken back to must have been simple almost to the point of plain. I’ll take today’s tasty over nostalgia if this is my option.
Admittedly, the fries were good cut, and tasty. Also, my kids said the corny dog was the best they ever had. However, I made ‘em wait an hour past when they normally eat and then walk the ¾ mile from my house first, so their judgement may have been off.
Bottom line: Good for the price, not great.

Im a burger conniseaur or however you spell it I love trying burger places old and new but Clown gets me everytime its just incredible the burgers are so tasty because of the grill that gives the good flavor and the fries are also amazing. Been going there since highschool we used to go every friday.

Clown Burger really shows it’s age (in a good way). It’s been around since the 1950’s and doesn’t appear to have changed much over the years. The walls are covered with pictures of the owner, Bill Louthan, with kids from the various softball teams and charities he supports. It gave me the good feeling that by eating there I was also somehow supporting those charities.
There were a couple of young girls working the counter who were very friendly and Bill was in the kitchen manning the grill. The burgers are simple with nice, thin patties. I ordered mine with grilled onions (good choice). It was greasy and delicious! The fries were solid too. I really would have liked some iced tea with it, but drinks only come as canned sodas or bottled water.
As other people have mentioned, call ahead to see if it will be open because it does seem to close randomly. On the day I went, there was a sign on the door saying it would be closed the following two days without an explanation. I later realized that those two days were St. Patrick’s Day and the day AFTER St. Patrick’s Day… so maybe that was the reason. ;-)
Heads up: The air in Clown Burger felt thick with smoke and grease from the grill so don’t wear any fancy clothes that might soak it up.

ALWAYS call ahead as this place closes on occasions not necessarily associated with holidays. Thin, greasy and luscious, a clown burger is worthy of an «out of the way» drive. The fresh cut fries are decadent.

When they say the patties are thin, they mean maybe a ¼ inch thin, so don’t be afraid to get a few patties on your burger. While I can agree that I’ve had a better burger, the fries are wonderfully delicious. The real reason I come here is for Clown Burger’s charm. There’s certainly no place like it! I’m in my twenties now, but I can still remember Clown Burger making burgers at my elementary school’s carnivals and other functions. I also spent the first 17 years of my life living on Stanley Keller Rd, so Clown Burger is definitely nostalgic for me. Plus, like other’s have mentioned, the owner is constantly raising money to benefit children. I’d say that only twice in a decade have I managed to show up when the place was open, but that makes it all the more worth it when it is!

At the risk of my husband divorcing me I think Johnny B’s in Southlake is better if taste is the only factor. However, we spend nearly 3x as much at Johnny B’s. Also, the cook at Clown donates his time and money to many charities. The burgers are thin and delish. No overcooked patties here! Because of the atmosphere and my sheer amazement of an owner and cook that had worked the grill over 50 years, I am always more than happy to eat here. Also, it reminds me of my great grandpa’s house :)

I’ve been going to Clown burger for as long as i can remember, maybe 30 years. It is my favorite hamburger. The hamburgers are the thin fast food style patty but really fresh. I hate thick hamburgers so i order a couple of burgers instead of doubling up the patties. This location isn’t as cool as the old freestanding one with the booths but the decorations make up for it. I think the owner has done a lot of charitable things and supported a lot of foster children and children from other countries, which i think makes the hamburgers taste even better.
Makes sure they are open before you make a special drive. They are always closed a couple weeks after Christmas and also sometime around July. I think the random hours are because they might run out of fresh ingredients and only the owner and his wife do the cooking.

I think you have to be a little older to fully appreciate Clown Burger. It’s very retro, although I don’t think it’s trying to be. It’s been around for 51 years, so without making changes, it’s going to come off as retro.
That being said, the burgers and hot dogs at Clown Burger are perfectly acceptable. Clown Burger is not trying to be something it’s not. Clown Burger serves up good solid food in a very entertaining environment (clowns parachuting from the ceiling, an Elvis memorial in one corner, the Belknap Room).
So next time you have a craving for a burger, or a chili dog, and some fries, you should give Clown Burger a try. It is a very good dining experience.
