Manhire Opticians is a second generation optical shop. We specialize in the latest optical technology, grind all of our eyewear in our own on premise lab, and stay up to date with the latest training, so we can provide our patients with the best measurements, fitting, and follow up care.

The words eyeglasses and eyewear are interchangeable. Eyeglasses sounds more like a medical device, yet eyewear sounds like something one enjoys or gets pleasure in wearing. Naturally, we prefer to use the term eyewear, because at Manhire Opticians we care about your appearance, as well as your good vision.

Our staff, Susan, Doug and Jan are all licensed Opticians. We are skilled in the interpretation of your Doctor’s prescription. We are committed to making you the very best pair of glasses you have every had, so you will see clearly and look wonderful.

Our customers are special to us. We service and repair what we manufacture. Yes, in this day and age that is very rare.

History

Established in 1973.

Manhire Opticians is a second generation business started by Robert G. Manhire who was an optician in the army during World War II. He outfitted an army truck with optical equipment and created the first mobile optical shop. His idea enable the army to go out and serve the troops wherever he was needed.

Robert’s first store was in Morristown, NJ and his second in Somerville, NJ. Both offices were under the name of Robert G. Manhire Opticians. In 1973 Douglas R. Manhire Opticians opened in the small strip mall that is now occupied by Mama’s Pizza on Mountain Avenue.

In 1983 we purchased our current location of 171 Mountain Avenue, and renovated the 200+ year old structure to accommodate our business.

Doug and Susan Manhire M.

Business Owner

Doug and Susan Manhire (the owners, opticians, and managers of Manhire Opticians) are both licensed Opticians. Between them they share over 80 years of optical expertise and experience.

Doug is a home grown NJ boy and was raised in Long Valley and Oldwick, NJ. Susan is a Pittsburgh girl and moved to New Jersey in 1969.
