A few months ago, I was in need of a car service for two days after my grandmother unexpectedly passed away and I didn’t have any way of transporting myself to her services (my car was in the shop and a bunch of other external factors were not in my favor). My father called A1A as they’re located relatively close — about a ten-​minute drive — from the funeral home, and so a car could easily pick my brothers and me up and bring us there.
My first interaction with the car service was actually pretty positive. We were running on a tight schedule, and the driver arrived right on time. He was pleasant and didn’t try to make too much conversation — he just confirmed our destination with us as we departed; I think he could tell we weren’t exactly in the mood for small talk, given our attire and the somber expression on our faces. Anyway, we arrived and as we were getting out of the car, the driver asked us about payment. The company knew that we had paid ahead of time since this was a two-​day commitment, but either he forgot, the car service didn’t relay this information to him, or he was looking for some additional tip money. Regardless of the reason, I found this extremely rude; just because it may be the «time» to inquire about payment doesn’t mean that it’s the right «place» to do so. I explained the pre-​paid situation and he nodded and told us to call when we needed to be picked up.
As the wake was coming to a close, my father suggested that I call A1A to ensure they would have a car waiting to drive us to the funeral the following day. I’m glad I did, because the guy on the phone had absolutely no idea what I was talking about until he put me on hold for a few minutes while he conversed with another employee. Finally, we were able to confirm the initial agreement, and also verified that someone would be bringing us home that night.
The following morning, I found myself needing to clarify once again that we were headed to the church. I initially asked just to make casual conversation, but the driver nearly brought us back to the funeral home, making me very glad that I’d inquired about the address he plugged into his GPS.
Keep in mind that my review is not a criticism of the car service’s actual ability to get us to our destination safely. In that respect, A1A Hackensack ²⁴⁄₇ Taxi Car & Limousine is a refreshing surprise, as someone who’s accustomed to the dangerous practices of cab drivers in New York City and Philadelphia. But as far as the company’s organization and reliability is concerned, it’s enough to dissuade me from using their service again, unless I really don’t have a choice in the matter.
