History

Established in 1968.

Bruni Obriecht started the business with the intent of promoting American handcrafts and providing an outlet for the artisans. In time, her husband, Bill, retired form his job to join her in the business and over the years, they have traveled all over the United States and Europe to find the finest handcrafts available for sale at their store. The store is known for high quality, unique merchandise and wonderful, personalized service.

Bruni brought a sound grounding in fine crafts with her when she immigrated to USA from Germany as a young bride. Although she saw many talented artisans in the United States, she realized that they did not have an ready venue for the sale of their crafts, and decided to rectify that situation in a concrete way by opening her own store. Over time, Bruni saw the imitators come and go, crafts fairs increase in numbers and popularity, and through it all, she and her husband, Bill, have maintained their love and commitment for American crafts. Today, some of the finest handcrafts in the world are made in the USA and available at the Calico Cat.
