Specialties
Welcome to GP’s, serving Hudson County since 1934! A family owned and operated business, we believe that when fresh, classic food is served to customers with genuine care and respect, we create the recipe for a perfect meal.
Today, we infuse time-tested, classic and updated Italian specialties with locally sourced themes and ingredients, producing a menu that is both heartwarmingly familiar and refreshingly unique. And while the cast of characters here at GP’s know how to prepare great plates, it is equally as important that we know how to treat you when you walk through the door. Many of our employees have been with us for over 20 years and we are proud of our extended family that uphold our standards of excellence in service.
We invite you to visit our website for full menus and catering information, then bring your friends and family to dine with us at our North Hudson or Hamilton Park locations tonight!
History
Established in 1977.
In 1934, Greek immigrant, James Politis (aka Grampa), began his family’s journey of restaurant ownership in Hudson County. He opened the Lackawanna Restaurant in the Hoboken Terminal.
In 1965, James’ son, George James Politis, Sr. owned the exclusive Union Club in Hoboken. It was the meeting place for the who’s who of the city until 1974.
In 1975, George, Sr. moved up the hill to Weehawken to open GP’s East — a rib and grill. This restaurant was along the cliff on Boulevard East with breathtaking views of the NYC skyline.
In 1977, the restaurant was moved a little way down the road to its current Guttenberg location and simply named GP’s Restaurant.
This year, GP’s continues its expansion in Hudson County with George Politis, Jr. opening his second location in Hamilton Park in downtown Jersey City in 2012.
Meet the Business Owner
George P.
Business Owner
GP’s is family owned and operated since 1934!
Don’t let Mama Politis’ small stature fool you — she is the true matriarch of the family. She cooked for President Reagan who came to visit in the 80s and she can still be found whipping up delights for her guests.
Following in his dad’s footsteps, George, Jr. takes the lead in the restuarant making sure all aspects of the business are in line with their family values: shirts are tucked, savory dishes are presented, all the while making sure each customer is happy. A visit to the restaurant isn’t complete without a greeting from George.
