Description

Specialties

This is a social enterprise that trains at risk youth for a career in the culinary field-the second largest employer in South MS. The Café serves traditional and creative Gulf Coast dishes, and offers Starbucks and Coca Cola beverages.

Students learn in the classroom and in the Café, where they learn food preparation, food service, food safety, business operations, drive-through service, and cleaning. The Café also offers catering and contract food services for local businesses and nonprofit agencies.

Students who complete the program are assisted in being placed in employment, college, or the military. Students may also prepare to take the GED exam. Students also receive training in resume preparation and interviewing, and are assisted in preparing an individual career plan.

Donors include AT&T, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, BP, Coast Coca Cola, Genzer-Whl Architects, Home Depot, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Mississippi Power Foundation, Shaggy’s Grill, and Naomi’s Catering.

History

Established in 2011.

This project grew out of the agency’s work to rebuild the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, the agency received its frst federal YouthBuild grant to train at-risk youth in the construction field to rebuild homes in South MS.

As the rebuilding progressed and the agency completed most of its housing rebuild projects, we shifted our attention to tourism and hospitality employers who faced a lack of trained workers that led to rapid employee turnover.

The 2010 Gulf Oil Spill was the final impetus that led local and regional funders to support the development of the nonprofit Café Climb. The program offers training and placement for at-risk youth, provides employers with trained workers, and generates revenue for the program through the Café and catering services. Donors include AT&T, Baton Rouge Area Foundation BP, Coast Coca Cola, Genzer-Whl Architects, Home Depot, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Mississippi Power Foundation, Shaggy’s Grill & Naomi’s Catering.
