Went to return an item bought in Chicago and could not because they don’t accept returns from certain Barnes & Noble stores. I had made a $ 100 purchase and was making a partial return. Head cashier was helpful but female manager was rude and told him not to accept the return for even store credit. Lowly cashier rolled his eyes at me. I had the receipt, it just wasn’t found in the system. Seriously will not be back to this out of date bookstore where there is no selection, rude employees, and nowhere to sit. Stay away from this store.

Sometimes it’s the way you recover from a mistake that makes or breaks a retail shopping experience. I dropped in at B&N for two things: Coloring books, and a little something for grandma’s 90th birthday. I found the coloring books immediately as I walked in and was happy to find them to be bargain bin priced! It took me awhile to figure out what to get Grandma since the woman has it all, so after perusing large print Bibles and audiobooks, I settled on a tin of fancy herbal tea and a bag of new wrapped Godiva truffle chocolates in the«Caramel Praline» flavor. Perfect. Easily found a really pretty gift bag and tissue, too. While this B&N location is not as large as the Troy store, they always have what I need! A few months ago, I was able to have a copy of East of Eden picked out online and they sent me a text an hour later when it was ready for pickup in-store. Such a breeze! So, I go to check-out with my items, and the cashier is super friendly, commenting with me about how tasty the chocolates are. She read my total to me, but then she realized that she didn’t ring up the tea, so she apologized and changed the total– no problem. I grabbed my bag and headed home, and arrived to find that the chocolates weren’t in the bag :( I couldn’t go back immediately, but decided to stop by on my way out of town to see Grandma. I called first, and they apologized and said to just bring in my receipt. Cool. I get there that evening, and a different cashier looked at me like, «huh?», and right as I began to re-explain the situation, another employee, Mary(perhaps the manager?) overhead and said«oh! The chocolates! The cashier yesterday set them aside with a note saying she forgot to put them in your bag!» Aww, so nice!!! After she could not immediately find them behind the registers, she went in back to look for another since the flavor I chose had sold out! No luck. She feels really badly at this point, and I’m happy to choose a different flavor because I can tell she genuinely feels badly about the situation. Then, after she scoured the register area one last time — she found them! Awesome! Wonderful customer service! Thanks so much to the staff at B&N Grosse Pointe! Grandma looooves her tea and chocolates! :-) Oh, and I love my coloring books, and am still reading East of Eden — it’s going to take me awhile :-/

I could spend hours in this B&N. It’s a bit hard to find. it’s in the hospital complex, along with a clothing store and pizza place. The retail options are clever. I love that you can connect to their wifi and read an ebook(Nook book) for an hour for free! They have calendars, giftsets, and Nook accessories. There is also a help desk for Nook assistance. There are usually enough cashiers that the wait isn’t more than a few minutes.

Old-style B&N, as evidenced by the 1990’s-era logo on the exterior of the building, lack of café inside the store, and the interior overabundance of mahogany décor. Had the largest selection of Christian books I have ever seen in a B&N location. Wonder why that is? The location seemed like it had been shoehorned into the corner of the shopping complex, but is probably convenient for the local clientele. Selection was up to date on the books, but the magazine supply seemed more limited than other B&N locations.

On the basis of size and selection, this really ought to be tagged as a «Barnes and Noble Light,» in which case, it earns 2.5 stars. Customers coming in expecting the full B&N experience with an expansive café where you can set up for hours, multiple comfy chairs, and a discount section the size of the average Coney Island will be disappointed. On the other hand, it is perfectly serviceable as a quick stop newsstand to get the latest magazine or new release without waiting for delivery or online ordering hassle. This Barnes and Noble is tidy and neat with large windows overlooking the parking lot, although organized differently from the average megastore. Fiction takes up the back half of the store and genre fiction, like sci-fi and teen, occupies tall bookshelves up against the wall. Most of the freestanding stacks are reserved for non-fiction topics(lots of business-related) and discount areas for cookbooks, historical and non-fiction selections, random art kits, and hardcover/paperback fiction. Searching through the store is easier than the usual sea of books, but the diminished selection makes checking the website for availability a necessity unless you’re after the latest release from Stephen King or Jodi Picoult. Fortunately, no music section clutters up the space — seriously, does anyone even use those any more with the advent of online streaming, iTunes, and Amazon? Finding staff is easier because they are spread out over a smaller floor space. The real flaws are the lack of seating and the lack of a café. I do not condone people who read materials they will never buy, but sometimes sitting down to thumb through a few competing books to find the right purchase is a real plus. A Starbucks or a Seattle’s Best Coffee serving up tea, caffeinated poisons and overpriced bakery goods would be appreciated, especially as the hospital doesn’t have a reliable source in the professional buildings. Note, parking is allowed for 2 hours tops and I think that parking staff enforce that heavily to prevent hospital traffic from loitering in the mall. An extended visit may not be too wise without moving your car.

Convient location. Wish they had more seating. Cashiers can be a little short and not very friendly when checking out.

I love Barnes and Noble, but this one was a tad disappointing. No café was present. No comfy chairs located anywhere in the store. The store closes at 9pm, what is up with that? All of the extra goodness that makes Barnes and Noble more than just another book store has been removed. Why should I come here over any other book store? I shouldn’t, and I wont. So sad… and I was tasting an apple purse, too.
