S & J Stereo is an amazing place. John Sasse, Owner, is one of the coolest gentlemen you will ever meet. He has some crazy stories from his time in Vietnam to his ownership with S & J Stereo. The history behind this record store is extraordinary. Sasse was a promoter for a number of up and coming rock and roll bands. He put together concerts in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. If you ever see that bald dude in the store, that is John Sasse, or as his friends like to call him, Sasse Pants!!!

Didn’t even know this place existed until a friend and Disc Replay told me about it. Right when I walked in, I was in awe at how many vinyls this place had! Huge selection and reasonable prices! Very friendly owner too! Glad this place is so close to home!

Amazing collection of vinyl for solid prices. I paid about 15 for some primo Bowie on vinyl and 3 for several album whose covers had some damage/staining, but the records played perfectly. As someone who just got into vinyl, I can’t recommend this place enough for it’s excellent selection and cheap prices. The place is a bit smelly, but you gotta remember that most of those records are at least 25 years old and in all honesty it enhances the atmosphere of the place.

he is good for albums, just wish(at least in the old store anyway), that the store didnt smell like cigarette smoke so much.

Sure, Jim may look a little bit like Hagrid and he may rip you a new one when you try to buy a Blink 182CD for your(now ex) boyfriend, but he’s really a big teddy bear and will special order any album you could want for a decent price – even if he thinks it’s totally lame… although he’s probably secretly happy to order that crap because it provides him with plenty of fodder for future make-fun-of-the-customer sessions. What I’m trying to get at is that Jim provides quality service and a good product in a land swelling with identical corporate bullshit stores – S & J is just a little rough around the edges(which only enhances the authenticity of the place. Grit is good). Yeah, okay, the proprietor is a bit gruff… but bring him a plate of homemade Christmas cookies and you’ll have him wrapped around your finger in no time.
