I live nearby so I shop at McKinney’s several times a week. They have an excellent meat section, friendly cashiers and their prices are surprisingly competitive on most items, considering its not a big chain store.

Place rating: 4 Gretna, NE
Typical small town independent grocery story(though Gretna isn’t small like it once was). Great place to grab the more typical items on your grocery list. Especially, if you don’t feel like driving into Omaha. So, my rating is based on how good of a «small town independent grocery store» it is. There’s no deli to speak of here. So, no «deli fresh» sliced meats and cheeses. Likewise, they sell bread but do not have a bakery, so no fresh baked store brand rolls and whatnot. They do have a produce section and a meat counter of sorts. Mostly they carry the common and popular items. If you’re looking for gourmet foods, obscure items, and the like then you’re in the wrong place. If you need to get some potato chips, a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, a head of iceberg lettuce, and a pound of hamburger then this is your place. Beer selection is actually pretty good for an independent grocery store of this size. They even have a decent selection of craft beers and imports. Wine and liquor selection is kind of a joke. It’s mostly bottom shelf and a few popular brands. It used to have a pharmacy but it has closed and they have a sign up directing customers to go to the U Save Pharmacy instead. Their prices are more than you’ll pay at Walmart, for example, but then Walmart buys milk a million gallons at a time and McKinney’s buys it a dozen gallons at a time. So, McKinney’s isn’t going to get the same wholesale pricing that the big guys do. Economies of Scale and whatnot. I don’t hold that against McKinney’s as I am okay paying a bit more to support a locally owned business that’s just right down the street from me. They also have a video rental. Service is always stellar. Very helpful and friendly.
