Sweet Cakes

i’m not surprised they closed. their cakes were terrible! very poor ingredients and DRY. well, karma did its job and this business closed. good riddance! also, the owners are awful people. the people have spoken by not buying from this yucky bakery.

There are better bakeries in town, including better Christian bakeries. If you want to support fellow believers with your wallet, consider His Bakery on 72^nd — fantastic pastries served by friendly, non-​judgmental devout Christians.

Wonderful service and delicious food by wonderful people. Will definitely do business with again. Thanks Sweet Cakes.

To the Unilocal people… This is a FIRST hand customer review! Excellent cupcakes and service. I stopped here on my return from fishing Marmot Dam. (dam has since been removed).

My kids and I ordered some cupcakes from Sweet Cakes and thought they tasted rather funny. Little did we know that we would have an episode of extreme food poisoning. We all were fighting for the bathroom and thought perhaps we should go to the hospital. Plenty of Pepto Bismol got us through the night. Would not buy from this «bakery» again. Never.

I was recently in the area and decided to try this bakery because it looked good online, but the staff were rude and cupcake I bought was pretty stale tasting. The worst part of this experience is that they were expensive on top of the other problems. I would not waste my money here again.

My husband and I picked up the cake for our friend’s wedding and the staff were incredibly apathetic, bordering on very rude. No eye contact, no friendly speaking tone. They made us feel as though they didn’t want us there.
Brought the cake to the wedding and although the cake itself looked fantastic, it lacked in freshness, and what I mean by that is, it’s evident that they do not use fresh ingredients. Many people at the reception took a bite of the cake, then set the plate down and walked away. Anyhow, the cake was way too sugared up and it was dry. A few days later I spoke with some of the other attendees and they all said the same thing about it.

I thought Unilocal was for critiquing the products.
I was in Portland for a Family party and needed a cake/​sweets! I found this place, ordered up a cake… Wow! Amazing! Sweet! Moist! Great flavors!
I know this cause its is my family business in So Cal! I you got rid of the hate posts, This place would be 5 star.
Unfortunately, Melissa, Cyrus, Amy, J D, Tony… etc have never been there, so their opinion doesn’t count!

The cupcakes aren’t that good. I can get better quality from Fred Meyers! And, I know at Fred Meyer I can feel like I’m welcome even if I were Black, Brown, Red, or Yellow! MLK Jr didn’t just die for one people, he rised for all people! Discriminating any person for being themselves is a hate crime regardless of how you say it!

I was doing a photo shoot in Gresham when I stopped by this place for a quick pick-​me-​up snack. The cupcake seemed to be quite dry and the frosting was stiff… I suspect it had been hanging around for a few days.

The cakes are dry and not very well done. They taste like they have been sitting there for a month. I would never go there again! Plus the owners are bigots.

During this random heat wave I was craving something sweet. I came across this cute little bakery, Sweet Cakes. They had a great selection of individual deserts, well presented. I had a hard time deciding. Frankly, it all looked soooo good. I finally settled on cheesecake. It was OK. It was a bit dry. It seemed as though it had been sliced a bit too long previously.
I don’t get out to Gresham much or I’d try it again.

I went here to see what it was like for myself. They have received a lot of free advertising. I had the cupcakes. They were less than stellar. I would not recommend them. The service was also poor. I kind of wasted my money and time.

These baked items were less than stellar, in fact, they were some the lowest quality I have ever had. Costco cakes put Sweet Cakes to shame. As for service, it was average. The bottom line, if you don’t have a quality product, don’t waste my time. One thing is for sure, they left out the secret ingredient.

This place sucks. PLEASE AVOID! Awful staff and service and the cakes are disgusting. I’d rather go to my local grocer before stepping into this place again.

I bought a Groupon deal since they are near my office and I had never tried them. I ordered in person a week in advance so that I could take them to our monthly office meeting. When I arrived to pick them up, they had no record of my order. As this young lady helping me apologized, low and behold I see a woman duck into an office. I recognized her as the person I had placed my order with and saw by the picture on the wall that she was Melissa, the owner. It was clear she had heard me and ran away like a cockroach when the lights go on. The person at the counter apologized profusely and covered for her but I was shocked at the fact that the owner would behave that way. The following week when my second order was actually prepared for me, the cupcakes were dry and mediocre at best. I much prefer Bella Cupcakes.

Please do not judge this business by it’s Unilocal ratings it has received recently. They make some of the best cupcakes I have ever had! I compare them to Saint Cupcake, and actually prefer this business’s cupcakes. And that is saying a lot. (I will tell you why later in my review. scroll down). They are better than Bella Cupcake. They were at FOUR TO FIVE STARS before a controversy took place, and have courageously faced an active campaign of hate and slander directed their way by organized groups of people who profess to have tolerance towards everyone… except those who disagree with them. There is a campaign out to take down their Unilocal ratings just because of their traditional religious beliefs, which is not what Unilocal is for. (Intelligent People: Notice how most of the slanderous negative «reviews» took place around a certain time period…). Once upon a time, people could agree to disagree on different beliefs, and get along, but nowadays that is sadly not proving to be the case.
These are good people, who make an exceptional product that deserves honest reviews based on the quality of what they make. I hope more people will honestly review their product and stand behind these gutsy people who took a courageous stand. They are not bigoted in the least, as bigotry is defined as hating a certain group of people, Bigotry is not defined as disagreeing with an idea or certain conduct (look it up). They do not hate gay people nor refuse to serve them, but rather they believe in the traditional definition of marriage between a man and woman as their religion teaches. You may disagree with that, but ask yourself «Do you have friends who have a different point of view on certain matters or a different religion, but you still love them for who they are?» Most of you will admit you do. They offered to make the gay couple other things besides a wedding cake, as they felt that by making a wedding cake for the couple they would be going against their own religious beliefs. And yes, if you can’t stand that the person who makes your food has different beliefs than you do, you are free to get your cupcakes elsewhere… but they won’t be as good ;-)
The Review:
My family and I have now been there two times (and plan more trips!) and ordered both times their 5 cupcake special each time (one cupcake free with an order of 5) with a variety of flavors from berry flavors to chocolate ganache. Both times, the cupcakes were moist, very flavorful /​delicious, and very professionally done. Melissa is a very good cake artist from what I have seen on her cupcakes :) The shop is also sanitary and neat, despite other such slander.
Now, I am a chocoholic, and, although, my favorite cupcake is the chocolate ganache that has the cream cheese like frosting on the top and rich chocolate ganache in the center of a very moist dark chocolate cake (AMAZING FLAVOR COMBINATION!!!), I like her non-​chocolate cupcakes the best of any I have tasted. The mix she uses has character and different textures and flavors woven in. It is not a bland airy cupcake, but has a real food like substance to it, but could not be called heavy. Quite a perfect happy medium. I compare it to Joe’s Donuts vs Krispy Kreme, as Joe’s Donuts is a real food like donut, with real dimension and layers of flavor, and Krispy Kreme is more like an overly sugary one dimensional dessert. They are the Joe’s Donuts of Cupcakes, with I would say more refinement and subtlety. Their bran muffin top cupcake with caramel and chocolate was scrumptious! Their berry cupcakes were very excellent as well. And even their lemon cupcake was quite surprisingly delicious.
One note of caution. you can tell these cupcakes are very real food, as they do not do well in a fridge or overnight in a cold place. They don’t have the chemicals put into a lot of store bought poor quality cupcakes to keep artificially moist /​soft. Putting baked goods into a fridge is a no no of most high end deserts and even breads, as they will dry out and get harder /​lose flavor. These are real, authentic home goodness baked cupcakes that are meant to be eaten that day when they are fresh :)
As for my comparison with Saint Cupcake. Although, I love my Saint Cupcake, I went there after I went to this place, and found, to my utter surprise, that I preferred Melissa’s cupcakes. She has more flavor variation and depth of flavor. Her vanilla frosting is not the same vanilla frosting each time. Some are more butter based and others are more cream cheese based, etc. Same with her chocolate frosting, which are all very high end. Each cupcake is different. It is very apparent that Melissa and her husband take great pride in what they do and have matched every cupcake individually with flavor combinations. Her mix also differs in texture and taste from one cupcake to the other.
So please, have an open mind, and try out their cupcakes. You will be glad you did!

I actually heard some good things about this family owned bakery so I decided to order a combination of cupcakes. We figured that the 4 year old birthday party guests would appreciate having their own individual «cake». What an utter disappointment, The cupcakes were not good at all. After apologizing to the parents of the children we all agreed that cake mix cupcakes would have been better and cheaper. The cupcakes we picked up looked nothing like those on display in the shop. Save your money! Any bakery but this one.

Excellent! If you are looking for something special, this is the place. Let me say that this place has such good cupcakes that I order all the way from Seattle, mail order! Ignore the politically motivated reviews, this place is a good bakery. But lets hope I don’t need to order a wedding cake from them, which is from what I understand, an amazing experience. I am happily married. :)
So bottom line, this place has moist tender, mouth watering cupcakes that has beaten anything I have eaten before. A++++

First off, they probably rock at wedding cakes and special order items.
So this is only for the cupcakes, which were fairly dry and bland. I bought 6 for a friend and I; the only one I liked was the pink champagne, which was like strawberry shortcake, which is hard to go wrong with.
I came around 5pm which might explain the lack of selection. Since they only had jumbo cupcakes, I thought they were regular size and it ended up being quite expensive. Then to not taste very good anyway, I was sad. My friend was not impressed, barely touched them.
I don’t think it was because I came later in the day, because I’ve let cupcakes from other places sit in my fridge for days and days and they were still better. Granted, I have kinds from everywhere I don’t like too, so maybe I just tried the wrong flavors. I will never know, cuz my crackcakes are a short drive down the street from here.
