H&M Cafeteria

Every review is an individual event based on a combination of expectations, prior experiences and the conditions at the time of the visit, thus a wide variety of rankings. But if we read each carefully we can learn from it. This is our third visit since it was reopened with the new owners, that alone says that we have not been turned off. When we patronize a cafeteria we know that they must prepare the food ahead of time and have it on display and more ready as backup because we want to have many choices when we go thru the line and not have to wait for something. And we don’t tell them when were coming but we expect it to be ready. And we don’t want to spend a lot of money either for having all these choices. So this may cause some food to get to a less than perfect state or not be as warm as we would like it. I take that into consideration when choosing my food.
Tonight I started with the Greek Salad with creamy italian dressing. It had a nice variety of veggies, lots of black olives and feta cheese. The dressing was very good. The entrée I chose was Chicken Crisco, and my only issue was that it did not come on a bed of rice. It also was good and a very substantail serving. Not having the rice gave me another choice, I could have taken the white rice but felt it would have been better flavored if the chicken had been cooked on top of it; and, the fried potatoes looked really good. So I chose them and this was my only disappointment of the meal as they were cold. I akso had the Broccoli casserole and while not as tasty as Mary makes I enjoyed it. Another comment on food preparation at a cafeteria in many areas, because a large part of the clientele could be described as chronologically gifted, including me, I sense that most cafeterias including K&W and J&S do not heavily season their food. But they do provide a wide variety of seasoning products that you can use to make it more to your taste.
Mary had the Baked Spaghetti and a salad thinking the serving size was small. But she was fooled and didn’t quite finish it. Of course that may have also been because she picked up a piece of the Peanut Butter Pie. And there was none of that left! I chose my favorite dessert, Coconut Crème Pie. This has been my go to dessert if available since Peabody High School back in the dark ages. And while I would not rank this in the top three, it is the best of the three cafeterias mentioned here by far.
And with all that we had a check of $ 22.00. That is value. To top it all off though are the people. Everyone greeted you and were very friendly and cheerful. The lady taking care of our area was quietly watching over us and making sure our needs were met and clearing dishes off the table as they were emptied in a very non-​intrusive way. I have never seen this done at the other cafeterias. The people took this rating from a 3 to a 4.

Great service, great food. Awesome place to take my grandparents for lunch. They always see friends and always seem to enjoy themselves. Portions could be better for the price, but all in all, pretty good.

I eat here two or three times a week an the food is always great. Never had a bad meal and the customer service is always superb. Big fan and highly recommend.

This used to be H & F Cafeteria I think. Back then it was decent, not up to K & W standards, but ok. Now? RUN FAR FAR FAAAAAAAAAAR away from this place. This is quite simply the WORST food I’ve EVER eaten in my 55 years on this planet. The chopped steak had ZERO seasoning, even the gravy lacked taste. I swear this is the first time I’ve ever questioned if I was actually eating cow meat… the Greek salad was bland, underseasoned, limp lettuce; same with the broccoli with cheese. Even the water wasn’t good. I had had a busy day and was VERY hungry. I couldn’t finish it-​just that bad.

Solid cafeteria food at fair prices. Not my favorite, but close to our house. We don’t hesitate to go when in the mood for some vegetables, and not wanting an expensive meal.

Traditional cafeteria fare. Chicken, cabbage, bread and fried potatoes were all good, service was generally friendly, place was clean and well stocked, fried okra was okay, macaroni was not good. It’s the closest cafeteria to us and not remarkably different than any of the other options, so we’ll be back.

What we had for lunch today was simply bad food — poorly seasoned, overcooked, greasy, and lacking freshness. This was the second time we’ve eaten here in the last 10 days, and while the first time wasn’t dreadful, it certainly wasn’t comparable with other cafeterias in the area — any cafeteria in the area. This time it was dreadful!
The Large Hamburger Steak was small, overcooked, tough, and tasteless. The Fried Chicken (¼) was totally under-​seasoned and extremely greasy. The 2 Garden Salads were anything but fresh, looking or tasting. The lettuce was limp, and brown around the edges, and the cucumber was incredibly bitter, like nothing I’ve encountered before with that vegetable. The Green Beans were under-​seasoned, bland.
We had high hopes for the reincarnation of this locally owned, northeast side cafeteria, but the last two meals are just that — the last two meals we’ll eat there.
