Heidel House Resort & Spa

What worked? Great location, clean room (although that may have been luck more than design). Excellent and very reasonably priced food.
What didn’t work? Horrendously indifferent customer service, at times verging on insulting and disrespectful. Not what I expected in Wisconsin.
Plus, mediocre cheese at the wedding reception. Really?

Rooms and grounds were clean, staff helpful and friendly. The only negative was the shower was absolutely horrible. Small handheld shower head that wouldn’t adjust in a still position. Water pressure not great but probably due to water loss from tubs filler diverter which wasn’t stopping the water flow into the tub. Housekeeping should have noticed and reported these bath issues. Didn’t utilize the spa but it was across the street not within the main hotel area. Overall a very nice place. Loved the indoor pool and hot tub!

Was here this past summer for a wedding.
The rooms are decent. Had a great view of the lake.
However …
The food, worst stuff I’ve ever had to try and eat. I don’t even want to know how much the bride and groom were charged for it. Meatballs, nasty. Stuffed mushrooms, stuffed with what? Cardboard? The potato skins where so dry and hard that one needed a power tool to break them up into edible portions. The running joke of the night from everyone at the wedding was how bad the food was. Who ever runs your kitchen needs to be let go.
The sushi, and cupcakes were the only two things that were actually good. Im guessing they didn’t make them :).
There was another event going on the same weekend and those people were commenting that their «food» was just as bad.
Then for New Year’s Eve some family members went here for their NYE party. Guess what their response was… horrible food! «Like it was made from TV dinners» was the quote I think.
It appears the only thing this place has going for it is being able to say «I went to the Heidel House. You should ooh and ahh at my high class status!»
This place and the grounds are beautiful. If you don’t eat here you will otherwise enjoy your visit.
Lastly, if you’re going to let people get married on the lakeshore, putting chairs on a steep hill is just asking for a bad episode of bowling for seniors. Or maybe geriatric dominos? Either way I was just waiting for the first one to tumble and watch the chain reaction begin. Thankfully it didn’t happen.

I’m an off-​season type of woman, so I enjoyed the reasonably priced rooms ($ 179 for a suite with a king bed and lake view), low crowds and peace. The grounds are well kept, albeit a little dated and offer an indoor swimming pool (clean!) Fitness center, spa, a pub/​bar and of course Greyrock restaurant. Check in was easy and fast. The view of the Lake from the lobby is worth a moment in time. The lower level pub isn’t much to speak about, definitely not as fancy as the bar at Greyrock but they do have TVs if you want to catch a game.
The suite was spacious, but a little old– the furniture was a little sparse and not overly inviting. However, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the balcony ofbthe living room offered great views of the lake.
Great place to spend a fall/​winter weekend.

I have to agree with the last couple of reviewers. I was expecting a lot more from their website descriptions. I agree with the others that the hotel needs refurbishing like the carpet in the halls and elevators is very old and worn. Also we had to keep the heat/​air conditioner on all night and it was so loud it made it hard to sleep.
We ate dinner at the Boat House and the food was okay but it took FOREVER to come out of the kitchen. Not that many people there. The same thing happened at breakfast. It took way too long for a simple plate of eggs and bacon and there was only 5 – 6 tables being used.
Next time we will probably rent a condo on the other side of the lake.

Just spent 3 days here for a conference. Beautiful location and lakeside view room. My room was very spacious with a huge bathroom. All of the food we were served was very good. Unfortunately the bathroom lighting is absolutely horrible, certainly nothing you can use to put make-​up on, and the wifi is very spotty and kept dropping. Nothing worse than to be traveling for business and not be able to answer emails.

My review is for the Escapade Yacht cruise which is part of the resort. I didn’t stay in the resort itself so can’t review it. The cruise itself was very enjoyable and relaxing. The boat captain on the other hand, I’m not so sure about.
He was friendly and all, but wouldn’t stop talking. Or signing. He decided to break out into song three different times during the cruise and also hardly dropped talking. I dislike it when captions provide useless and irrelevant information during the cruise. Just shhhh for a bit and let us enjoy the scenery. That’s all. Otherwise, nice and enjoyable cruise overall. 1 hr is the perfect length.

My husband and I had a very relaxing enjoyable stay at the Heidel House thanks to a groupon. For the groupon price it is worth it. But I see and hear the rooms range from 100’s-300’s of dollars. While the grounds are beautiful, the service great with friendly people, the place could do with some updating. The exterior of the wing we stayed in (maybe because we had a groupon) was like an old apartment building. The interior just seemed dated. The pool is small but fine. The setting of the place is impeccable on the shores of the lake. They even have a small sandy beach. Breakfast was good. Luke, our waiter very friendly. Since we were here mid-​week, it was very quiet. Would come back again with a groupon.

Loved Loved LOVED my visit here! I took a long weekend and spent 2 days here. Had I known how incredible it would be, I would have spent a week. Next time…
Coming from Milwaukee, Heidel House appears like an oasis in the middle of rural country. I mean literally you drive a half hour past Fond du Lac, through Rosendale, and suddenly the corn fields yield to a lake lush with green vegetation. A short drive on a winding road around Green Lake and you are there.
What an inviting property. It really is the best of both worlds. It feels like a summer camp for adults… posh, elegant, and luxurious with stunning lake views, an outdoor pool and hot tub, spa, and golf course nearby. One afternoon I claimed a cozy wooden Adirondack chair on a pier to read a book. The sun danced on the water and I enjoyed the sound of waves crashing on the shore. It was heavenly.
My room was nice. Extremely clean, quiet, well-​appointed. Perfectly restful.
I ate at the Boathouse Pub twice during my stay. The food was good, served efficiently, and moderately priced.
Don’t forget to take a tour on The Escapade, a cabin cruiser boat operated by the resort. I told the Captain, Dennis, that he was so good at conducting the tour that I was going to nominate him for entertainer of the year. I enjoyed my visit, and will go back.

Beautiful scenery and cordial staff. Make sure if you take leftovers back to your room, to ask for a microwave. We were never informed we could ask for a microwave, so half the blame does fall on my husband and I, but the resort staff should be communicating this factor more openly when checking in. Lower marks only due to, the staff didn’t have a lot of information unless it had to do with the resort itself about local attractions, so we used google to explore. The yacht tour was led by a wonderful captain and you get the first beverage for free. The scenery is beautiful. However, my husband and I learned more about the real estate for sale, so in a way it felt more like a sales pitch, and we are more into the historical side of things (yes, there was history with some of the real estate on sale). So courteous staff, beautiful scenery, little weird on parking (not sure where they have handicap parking for individuals who would need it), and mostly a very kept up resort. Indoor pool area and locker rooms were both needing tlc and the pool was cold. I can see if it is outdoor to be cold, but indoor, I was shivering. Would be better for people more into golf location wise.

I am being very generous by giving three stars. Only reason I gave three is because the scenery is beautiful and I really enjoyed my time here… despite the deficiencies.
Ok so this is an expensive place to stay. On the internet it’s referred to as a resort and a spa. I’m sorry to say that Heidel House is going through an identity crisis. It is neither a resort nor a spa. There is a separate spa… but you have to drive there! How can it boast being a spa when it’s not even close to the building? As far as resort… when I hear resort, I think high-​end, luxurious, and well worth the high price tag. Heidel house is not high-​end, luxurious or worth the high price.
The rooms are really outdated. There is no fan in the bathroom, the air conditioner is very noisy and on the patio, there are cobwebs all over. Certainly not what I would have expected for the price I paid.
The maid service was not good. I believe that the maid simply reused towels that we left on the floor. Also, my friend had a pair of fuzzy socks she slept in that she accidentally left under the covers. After maid service, my friend noticed that the socks were still in the exact same spot… I don’t believe sheets were changed at all either! How does this place have the nerve to call itself a resort when even that isn’t handled properly.
The outside pool and sitting area was relatively nice. I enjoy swimming and sunbathing so I looked forward to that the most. However, the chairs had cobweb and sometimes bugs on them. Here’s an idea! Power washer… The pool itself was really gross. There were hundreds of bugs floating around! They need to invest in a better filter or have someone periodically out there skimming for bugs.
The restaurants were adequate. Not bad but nothing special either. I don’t know if I’ll return here. Possibly with a great groupon or something.

The location of the Heidel House has a spectacular location and view of Green Lake. This is the best part of the venue. I had a mixed experience with the staff. First, I called about the Lobster Boil as we wanted to attend with our family. I was on hold for 30 minutes just to clarify how to book the tickets and then asked about a younger child attending. I was placed on hold again for another 20 minutes and the front desk returned to say they needed to get back to me. My call was returned the next day which was fine but at that point we changed our mind. The second experience occurred when I needed to take a work call. There is little to no mobile reception on the grounds which is fine if you want to be fully unplugged. I went to the business center and I couldn’t get any reception. I ended up having to stand in the middle of the drive way to take my call which was a bit of a disaster. All just a warning.
We took the evening boat cruise which was lovely and probably the highlight of our experience at Heidel House.

I finally spoke to Anna, the manager at the Heidel House Resort, and she genuinely apologized for the lack of communication and our bad experience. She listened to all of my complaints, and offered to make things right. I appreciate when businesses take responsibility of their customer’s bad experiences and make things right, which they did.

Gorgeous location, views of the lake, and lovely grounds. The staff were all very friendly, and the resort amenities were nice, but a lot of the rooms and buildings are somewhat outdated, and the food is hit or miss.
I came here for a friend’s wedding, and overall had a lovely time. Sitting on the dock out by the lake, walking around through the flowers, and enjoying the outdoors were highlights of my stay at the resort. I stayed in a room in the guest house, which was fine if slightly outdated, except for the temp control. The AC blasted cold air right on the bed extremely loudly, but the room quickly became stifling when it was turned off. We spent most of the first night alternating between sweating and freezing under all the covers, having to get up throughout the night to turn it on and off. The water temp in the shower was also iffy — it would go between almost warm enough, to really cold for 10 seconds, and back to warm.
Some of the food I had was quite good — rehearsal dinner of burgers, chicken, brats and saurkraut, salad, veggies and desserts was great. The veggie frittata I ordered from the Sun Room was also pretty good.
Lunch in the spa café was tasty and fresh, but there were plenty of headaches in getting it — the bridal party ordered lunch from the main restaurant to have brought up to the spa while we were finishing getting our hair and makeup done. We were told the food would take about 30 minutes, but 45 mins later it still wasn’t there. When we asked we were told it would be «only a few more minutes». Finally it came — most of it anyway. They never put in two of our orders, and brought another salad we didn’t order. They left the extra salad with us after we asked so all the girls could at least have something to eat, and then proceeded to let us know that one was on the house. Of course it should be on the house — we didn’t order it! We were also on a tight timeline trying to get ready for the wedding. Finally about 30 more min later, the last 2 salads we ordered came. And despite my friend and I ordering the exact same chicken avocado wrap as a salad, the two dishes we got very vastly different (one of these was one that came late) — one had cheese and romaine, the other had spring mix, no cheese, and different chicken.
Also, the wedding food itself was not very great. I had the pecan-​crusted walleye, which was morel like a breaded fillet o’ fish like you’d find at McDonalds. And the apps during cocktail hour only consisted of mushy scallops, a couple other passed hors d’oeuvres that I never saw, and cheese cubes with Ritz crackers. Gross. Would not recommend the catered wedding food here. Finally, they never served coffee, and when we were asked we were told there wasn’t any. Apparently the coffee cups on the tables were purely decorative!
All in all, I had a great weekend, and didn’t encounter any unfriendly staff. However I expected a little more from such a resort that bills itself as an upscale wedding and event destination.

Rooms are comfortable, but temp control is so dated I couldn’t close the outside air so the room got humid (hate humid!). The setting is beautiful and the food is good. Have been here for 2 conferences and they have been pleasant. This second conference, how do you run out of canned soda for a group? Hmmm. Room service is not really an option if the resort is busy… they just let the phone ring and then it takes forever for the food (an hour and still waiting).
A good place to give a try.

This place is truly a great place to escape to from the chaos of city life. It’s located in the middle of nowhere but there is a lot to do at the resort; Including a state of the art spa. They have a variety of restaurants to choose from with good quality food. The customer service is also great. Will def visit again!

We stayed at the Heidel House last weekend both Friday and Saturday nights for a wedding that took place on the resort grounds on Saturday, so this is a fairly comprehensive review. Here goes:
The room: We reserved a room on Groupon that was listed as a suite. When we (family of four) got there to check in, we discovered it wasn’t really a suite like it was advertised. We took up issue with the front desk and all was resolved quickly and easily. I commend the front desk worker named Johannes who worked with us on this misunderstanding. The room itself was pretty typical for a hotel room; however, the huge bath tub was a plus. It was cozy and quiet, and the walls were not paper thin like so many newer hotels seem to be nowadays.
The food: We ate dinner at the bar/​grill in the basement of the main hotel building the first night we were there. The food was very good, and pretty reasonably priced. Service was good. We ate brunch buffet at the main floor restaurant both Sat and Sun mornings and that good was very good also.
The bar: I was over-​served Friday night (okay, I probably should have gone to bed earlier and skipped that 7^th beer…). Bartender named Angie was super friendly. Nice, clean atmosphere although I do wonder how often their tap beer lines are cleaned.
The wedding: The wedding facility was nice (even given our crappy weather) and the people associated with the wedding and reception (bartenders, wedding planner, food caterers) were very cordial. Like the restaurant food, the reception food was also very tasty.
The verdict: What impressed me most about the Heidel House was their staff — bartenders, front desk people, chef in restaurant, manager who seemed to be there ²⁴⁄₇ wearing a suit, etc. — and how genuinely cordial and friendly they all were. Maybe because so many were college kids at Ripon and UW-​Oshkosh, or maybe because they’re just all good ‘ol Midwestern Wisconsin people, or maybe that is something Heidel House management emphasizes, who knows? Either way, we would gladly return here for another wedding or for perhaps a weekend getaway next summer.

Just had the Sunday Buffet in the Sun Room. Food was good and bad… potatoes were horrendous. The main issue for me writing this review, service. We waited 5 minutes, before I had to ask for a hostess, so we could be seated, unacceptable. We received our first cup of coffee. Then not ONE REFILL. FIRST RESTAURANT EVER, WITH OUT A COFFEE REFILL. I grew up here, I worked here 25 years ago, without the view, this would have been 1 star. Little Corporal, I apologize for giving The Heidel House a chance at my business for breakfast. NEVER AGAIN!

Inconsistent is the one word I would use to describe Heidel House. Out family had 5 rooms for 3 nights each. Location is very nice and the pools and hot tubs were enjoyable. Rooms are dated with clunky keys, noisy a/​c and inconvenient power outlets. That said, bedding, TV, and bath was nice. We did have an issue with night manager waking us up to move car out of Tesla charging spot. We had told front desk we were parking there, and they said no problem, for it was never used. My father is handicapped and handicapped parking 40 yards further from room than Tesla charging. Thought issue could have been handled more professionally.
Bottom line, if you want a nice resort and can overlook minor inconveniences, Heidel House can meet your needs. If you have 5 star all around requirements, you should look elsewhere.

At $ 200/​night I expected more, much more. My wife grew up here in Green Lake and always considered this the ritzy upscale resort where all of the rich Chicago tourists go. I hoped it would be nice to bring her home to visit in a relaxing upscale way. Not even close. 60’s motel feel to our room where WIFI doesn’t work and the air conditioner is marginal. The bathroom door doesn’t close (doesn’t even come close, hits the frame) and there is no exhaust fan which is probably why the door won’t close.
We went to dinner in town and came back on Saturday night to take advantage of the Boathouse Pub’s advertised outdoor fire pit overlooking the lake. Plus extra incentive in the form of a 2 for 1 coupon for a local beer which we received at check-​in. We took a seat at one of the many open tables outside (should have been a clue). After about 10 minutes a waitress delivered food to a nearby table and, ignoring us, started busing a nearby table. Then she walked around us to assist a security guard struggling with placing a barrier. She then walked back around us and asked if we were eating, I said no just having drinks to which she said «we’ll you’d be better off going into the bar and getting them yourself!»
Still clinging to my coupon we went inside and took a seat at the bar where a few adults were having drinks. There were also a handful of teens milling about playing pool looking like they hate going on vacation with their parents. Being Mr. Observant, I notice there is no bartender but three or four waitstaff getting food and placing orders at the kitchen pass. After at least five minutes in the no music, no volume TV ambiance teen hangout, I asked a passing security guy if there was a bartender. One of the young waitstaff yells out «I’m the bartender!» At last I have her attention! Me, «I’d like two Beers to go please.»
