I’ve been coming here since I was a young kid, it’s always been the best spot to get a good slice of pizza in Green Brook/Dunellen. Great chicken Caesar salad too. Entrees can be on the expensive sign definitely. They have dine in options for lunch and dinner. Very convenient location for locals. 5STARS

I love the food! Seriously, the food and the place itself just make you feel like youre at nanas for Sunday dinner! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic italian food at a great price! And the portions are huge! You’ll always have lunch or dinner the next day :)

One of the real Italian Food. Very generous with the portions. Have never had one bad meal, and go quite often. Told quite a few people about Mr. Assante’s, and love it. When you drive up, it looks like a regular Pizza Store. But they have a very nice room in the back. I even have them cater some of my get togethers. Try them, you will not be disappointed.

This place has been my favorite Italian food for a very long time and Italian food is my favorite kind of food. I recommend a chicken parmesan roll and dunk it in the sauce… or the pan pie(also dunk), or Sicilian pie, the classic dinners… you can’t go wrong

Great value if your looking for solid portions and quality Italian food. Chicken Caruso is everyone’s favorite, but the specials are always spot on. BYOB need I say more. Service is hit or miss but I don’t go for the service I go for the food and value.

My wife and I have found the food and service excellent on Saturdays in their small simple dining room. If you are looking for a fancy environment this is not the restaurant for you. If you are looking for good quality Italian food at a reasonable price, try it. You will find it enjoyable.

I lived in Green Brook a good portion of my life having grown up there and have been going here since the 70’s. Mr. Assante has always been one of the best pizza places in the area(except for that brief time Frank owned it 90’s?). They’ve got great pizza crust. Seems to always be a good pizza no matter how busy they are. They were the first place I can remember serving Garlic Knots. With Joseph’s accent(or perhaps me being a dirty teenager) I thought he said Garlic Nuts, so that’s what we used to call them and he probably thought were saying knots. Whatever. They’re delicious. I think my favorite item there is not on the menu. just tell them to make it for you. cheese steak, extra onions, on top of a garlic bread. Pretty fantastic. I live over an hour away now, and there’s a few places in the area I like to eat at, but I usually try to make it in for a slice of pizza at least. I kind of wish they still had a Pac-Man or better yet that Jungle King arcade game. I used to play that all the time.

We had a very disappointing dinning experience this past week. We dined in and right from the beginning the waitress seemed like she couldn’t be bothered with us. She was less than friendly, which added to our less than pleasant experience. The food was less than average and very over priced. The fried calamari was very tough, some pieces were barely chewable, the bread was ice cold in the middle, the entrée portions were large, but not very flavorful. Overall disappointing, especially for a NJ pizzeria.

First are foremost, excellent pizza that always comes out right. The rolls are also wonderful. I haven’t had anything myself but a number of my colleagues also very much like the subs. If you can’t tell from the above food choices, I’ve only been here for lunch during the work week and can’t really comment on the dinner quality. If you want a nice tasty lunch, it is a great place to go. You will see people of all professions and walks of life here(contracter van sitting next to a high end Mercedes). The staff at the counter can seem perhaps indifferent from a personality perspectve when you go here the first time but they are actually quite friendly. Biggest reasons for not being a higher rating would simply be the atmosphere isn’t great.

They make a great cheesesteak and an awesome white broccoli pie. A little pricey on some items, but worth the extra dollar or two.

Mediocre at best. Plus they don’t deliver. There are plenty of other pizza places in the area that are much better.

This place has the best pizza in the area. Im from Nutley and know good pizza. Try the fresh tomato basil and oregano slice. Nice golden crust and a bruscetta taste. Fridays there is broccoli rabe and garlic. Try a slice of that and your smilin Friendly quick service and always a seat to be had. Ive tried a few pizzerias in the area and Mr Assantes is by far the best.

I’ve lived in the Greenbrook area for 12 years now and I’ve been to Mr. Assante’s a few times. I’m Italian and picky about food — I’ve had good and bad here — but usually it is pretty good for a small place that has pizza as their main product. Had my daughter’s bride’s maid’s luncheon there last week — they accommodated me very quickly when another local Italian place suddenly shut down with my reservation! Everyone enjoyed themselves, the service was fantastic and the food was plentiful and good. AND… they now deliver!

I tried their pizza for the first time last night. I ordered a regular slice and a specialty slice(chicken and tomatoes) along with garlic knots. Overall, this place is mediocre at best — it wasn’t bad but I have had better. The pizza was good and did its job, but it wasn’t great nor memorable. I found the garlic knots not seasoned well enough nor as garlic-y as I would like(just seemed like a few sprinkles of garlic powder on some bread). I give them a 2.5 stars for somewhat satisfying pizza and reasonable prices, but they do not deliver and their garlic knots are not up to par. The hunt for awesome pizza in this area is still on…

Slow service, bland food. We didn’t have the pizza that everyone here raves so much about, but the things we did try were not impressive. My pesto was basically just a pool of green grease and the meatballs my boyfriend had were bland. The meatballs were also overpriced for just two medium sized meatballs. The soup was bland; my boyfriend had to add a ton of salt and pepper to make it taste like ANYTHING. My side salad was just sad looking lettuce with two EXTREMELY thin slices of onion and one tiny slice of tomato. Maybe we should have gotten the pizza.

It’s been years since I used to frequent this place during business trips to Bridgewater, convinently located along Route 22. Some of the best pizza slices, yum! I think I still have that Mr Assante tee shirt somewhere to prove it!

This place has been a fixture for more than 30 years. I came here when I was in high school and I’m now 51. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here. Just went back again last night. The food is very good and ample. Just across Rt. 22 is Carrabba’s. Carrabba’s is just as good but there you have to wait in line on a Friday. Mr. Assante is a great alternative. I’m moving out of NJ in a few weeks and will miss this place.

Whenever our travels take us back to the Green Brook area around lunch or dinner, we often make the effort to go back to Mr. Assante. We used to eat here all the time when we lived within walking distance. As is standard in most NJ suburban Italian restaurants, they have a pizza counter with seating in the front, and a more formal dining room with table service in the back. The same food is available in both places. The highlight of the menu for me is the 8 or 9 pastas available with one of about a dozen different sauces. My favorite is the Gaetano, a tomato cream sauce with bell peppers and breaded eggplant. The pesto is also great, especially in summer when they use basil they grow on site. All the other standards are here – veal, chicken, beef, seafood. On the weekends they usually have specials which are worth checking out – things like pasta with broccoli rabe, or rigatoni aurora(pillows of rigatoni stuffed with ricotta and pinched shut, served with a sage cream sauce.) The pizza is also very good – they have regular and wood-fired pies. I haven’t found an Italian place near us in Chatham that I like as much as Mr. Assante’s. That’s saying something. Mr. Assante just is one step better than the rest. It’s a family place – Mr. Assante’s in the back, and his wife is often cooking with him. His son used to be a waiter but I believe he’s now out on his own. It’s also BYOB.
