Description

Specialties

We specialize in serving vintage cocktails made with original ingredients from the 1920’s & 30’s. Our hope is to recreate the atmosphere that existed during the days of prohibition and allow our guests to enjoy drinks that are not commonly offered or even known. Everything from our location, to our 1920’s bar with secret compartments, will take you back in time to the early life in Greeley when bootleggers, scofflaws and flappers roamed the streets of downtown.

History

Established in 2014.

1908 came from an idea of bringing something interesting and fun to Downtown Greeley. We wanted to revive Greeley’s long history of speakeasies, as it was a dry city all the way until 1969.

During Prohibition (1919 – 1933) illegal liquor was flowing through secret tunnels under the streets of downtown businesses. Beneath the Greeley Chophouse and the Massage Therapy School, evidence of two speakeasies beckons the imagination of a different time when imbibing was pushed underground. The barkeeps and patrons had to get clever in order to evade the police. There are stories of citizens entering the old Rex Theater to see a show, but instead using the tunnels to visit their mistresses in the Camfield Hotel across the street and enjoy an illegal drink in the underground tavern.

With this history and the opportunity to provide guests with a unique experience in Downtown Greeley, 1908 was born.

Meet the Business Owner

Tim V.

Business Owner

Tim Veldhuizen has been in the restaurant industry for most of his life. When he was a teenager, Tim got his first job at a Ray restaurant. Tim said on the first night he worked, expecting to wash dishes, his boss told him, «No, you’re cooking!». He learned a great deal from his boss, who had great character, as he put it, and that job set the wheels in motion.

In the late ‘80s, Tim started working at a restaurant in Loveland, The Summit, which he would eventually co-own. He continued to branch out in the restaurant business co-owning The 4th Street Chophouse and McGraff’s Casual Dinner House, both in Loveland, CO. After selling his stake in his Loveland restaurants, Tim and his family moved to Argentina for 3 years and even opened up a restaurant while living there. Following his move to S. America, Tim brought his more than 25 years of experience to Greeley and created the Greeley Chophouse, Moody’s American Grill & 1908!
