Congri Cuban Restaurant

A great hidden gem. They serve you excellent food with good service and nice portions. The atmosphere is nice with music and pictures of Cuba on the wall. I can’t wait to go back!

Very disappointed, I got a cubano sandwich. Barely any meat in it, not the right bread, no cruch. Very poor display. I will not go back, if you can’t get a cubana right, no sense tring nothing else. I will just keep getting my cuban food from chicago. Go at your own risk, you’ve been warned.

Love this little gem of restaurant. They have delicious food and great service! We have been there a couple times and just love it!!!

Not too good Order of Oxtail stew is a safe bet however the oxtails were cut in half or thin sliced This is hard to do if you are a butcher you need a band saw to cut this stuff the oxtail is cut to save money not good for the customer who is still hungry. Won’t be back.

I was not impressed with the food at all. The people working there where very nice so I do feel guilty saying this. It is possible that I ordered the wrong meal, but I was convinced enough to not go back.

The Cuban sandwich was good, the soup was outstanding, the prices reasonable. The service was on point. I would definitely go there again.

Amazing Cuban food! Most Cuban restaurants I’ve gone to overly fry their empanadas or are too greasy. This place had my idea of perfect empanadas. The sandwiches were great as well as their pastries. Everything was delicious!

My wife and I tried Congri for the first time last week and we were pleasantly surprised… the food was excellent and reasonably priced.
I had a Cuban sandwich and it was the best I’ve ever had! My wife had a steak sandwich, which was also very good. We shared an order of Congri (seasoned rice and beans) and fried yellow plantains, which were very tasty. I highly recommend the plantains if you’ve never had them… sweet, but very good.
We then split a guava and cream cheese pastry for dessert… freshly made and delicious!
We were there for lunch on a Friday and there was only one other table occupied. I hope more people find this hidden gem in Grayslake. Great authentic Cuban food.

So this place is a little bit of a hole in the wall, but a great hole in the wall. Went to this place on a Saturday evening and got the ox tail platter which was amazingly succulent and flavorful. Prices are very fair and you get nothing but a home cooked meal here. For me it’s comfort food for others it is a great taste of Latin food from the Carribean.

Congri doesn’t look like much from the street (a simple storefront), but they have some of the best Cuban food I’ve ever had. We’ve ordered carry-​out numerous times from here and we are always very pleased.
This past Sunday evening our family-​of-​four ordered many of our usuals:
For appetizers we ordered: Ham Croquettes (my daughter and I enjoy them). Papa Rellena (stuffed potato balls), and Empanadillas.
We also ordered three sandwiches (2 ham and cheese, and 1 Ropa Vieja Sandwich). The bread is outstanding! My family preferred the ham and cheese, but I preferred the Ropa Vieja. We didn’t order the Cubano, but we’ve had it in the past and it is among the best Cubanos I’ve ever tasted.
We also added two orders of fried yellow plantains. My son loves them and practically devoured them by himself (I may have had two or three).
My one complaint: We love the guava pastries but I’d say there is a ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ chance that they are sold out (as has been the case the past two times we’ve been there).
Overall the food is excellent, and the service is very friendly.

There are no good, or really even just any, places to get Cuban food where I live so this was a tasty treat. We had Cuban coffees (tiny coffee, packs a big punch!), empanadas, stuffed potato balls, Cuban sandwhich, shredded beef, rice, fried green plantains… Everything was fresh and tasty. Service was fast and friendly. Prices are $ 5.99 for a sandwhich– $ 12.99 for entrees, $ 2 – 3 sides, etc. the menu isn’t huge but doesn’t need to be, they’ve got the staples. I will go back to craving Cuban food once I’m back home again.

Tasty sandwiches and sweet potato fries in a small (6 tables) establishment. Good for a friendly and inexpensive lunch if you’re up this way in Wildwood, IL

My mother is 100% cuban and i am of great expert with cuban food. Congri definitely reaches the closest by far to the taste of cuban food. if your looking for something americanized then this place isnt for you. but of your looking for something authentic Congri to me definitely meets the standards. must try!

What a pleasant surprise. I have been very hesitant to come in here based on the reviews, but am very happy we did. I ordered the ropa vieja (one of my favorites) and it was flavorful. It was served with rice and beans and fried sweet plantains which had the perfect amount of carmelization. Brian, our server, was very nice! I will come back.

First time today! Easy to park, good food, good price, very nice people. Everything very clean. For sure I will become a regular… :) 4 Stars for not having a better signage and website. … Actually, it is 4.8!!! Nice to meet you Isabelita and Chiqui! Love everything, every bite!

Go to Chicago for Cuban food. This food is far from being tasty. It was gross. THIS FOOD IS SHIT. Who serves rice in a mold? It was nuked in a microwave. The fried plantains were soggy and greasy. The so-​called steak was a Sysco blade steak was under seasoned and overcooked. The «grilled onions» were still raw. SO MUCH DISHONOR TO CUBAN FOOD. By the way, spell check your menus. Seriously. The sign on your front door — «BUSINNES» LEARN TO SPELL.

Service was good, everyone there is very friendly.
I went twice for lunch. I tried the ground beef Chiqui and the Chicken Fricasee. Both were ok, flavors weren’t very strong. Very good Congri though.
Unfortunately both times I could tell the entrée was reheated because it was luke-​warm. Not very appetizing. Portions are very small for what you pay.

They seem like very nice people, but their is no lunch menu, and the portion size was small. I ordered tostones for an appetizer, and they were good. 3 pieces, each smaller than a golf ball.
For some reason, they call rope vieja something else, but I ordered it for $ 10.99.
It was flavorful, but way too little of it. The congri was ok, but the plantains were delicous. I felt like it was a French restaurant where you arrive hungry and leave hungry. My lunch was $ 15, and the $ 3 tip shot it to $ 18. Lunch portion, but dinner prices.

A brand new Cuban restaurant opened today in Grayslake.
I happened to drive by and saw the open sign. My wife and I love Cuban food so had to give it a try.
We were greeted warmly upon walking in. The staff were friendly and excited. We are told it is the first day, I’m sure a lot of nerves.
The dining area is very small which included five tables, one is a two seater. (I’m sure many remember the former occupant, the space is not large.)
We went at lunch and both tried a standard Cuban sandwich. It was very good and tasty.
We also tried tostones (fried green plantains– not sweet) as well as the papas fritas (the fried yellow plantain– sweet.) I know … «two plantains» you ask. Hey, it’s Cuban food. (don’t you want to try both anyway? there were 2 of us, we shared)
I have to point out the wait staff looked like they were «helping out» for the day and their inexperience showed a little. I did see a table get up and leave due to slowness. However, there were smiles and a lot of trips to and from.
It’s their first day, learning curve will be there. Be patient, help them along and they will learn.
The menu is small but offers some common fare and even a not so common, «chicken fricassee oriental» (its presence confused me a little but if its good, good luck :))
Overall, it was a tasty sandwich, nice people. Some typical bumps for what appear to be new restauranteurs so I’ll be excited too see them gain some experience.
