Sierra Mountain Inn

Wasn’t very quiet, we were right on the street. The second bedroom had a one layer shade over the door window that shined light into the bedroom.

We had such a lovely stay at the Sierra Mountain Inn. Phil was such a hospitable host. We had stayed in Nevada city the night prior and last minute decided to stay another night in Grass Valley. Without any reservations Phil took us in and gave us a really beautiful clean room and a little bed for our doggie Bella. The rooms are very reasonably priced and the beds are the most comfortable. The Inn is tucked back in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by a vineyard and trees. We slept with the windows open! Lovely.
We really enjoyed our experience and are definitely coming back!

I should have paid attention to the reviews that were critical of the female manager/owner’s behavior. Hospitality is NOT her strong suit. The primary reason I selected this hotel was their pet-​friendly policy. After checking in I realized that I hadn’t told them about my dog, so I went back to the office 2 minutes later and told them about my pet. The friendly gentleman who had checked me in said that they would put me in a different room. No problem. I went back to my room and waited making sure to keep my dog off of the bed.
Ten minutes later I was surprised by someone violently banging on my door. I opened it a crack, peered outside and the female «manager» rudely bellowed, «YOU NEED TO GO TO THE OFFICE AND STRAIGHTEN OUT YOUR SITUATION!!!» I went back to the office with my credit card out and ready to pay whatever nominal fee the hotel charged for pets. What followed was a tense ten minute transaction where the poor gentleman at the counter cleared up the situation while the Ms. Hospitality simmered behind him while sneering at me. Ugh. The form I signed upon checking in stated the fee was $ 35.00, but I was charged $ 38.50.
The room they moved me into was slightly larger and had tiny kitchen. That being said, it had a strong chemical/​cleaning solution odor, and ants crawling around in the cramped shower. Judging by the number of cars in the parking lot the hotel was less than half-​full, but this is where they decided my filthy dog and I should spend the night.

Yikes! Watch out for the tricky owner if you have to cancel — she’ll book one middle night of a four night cancellation and stick you with the whole bill and claim she was «unable to fill it». If you’re «lucky» she might offer to split it with you — whoopee! Half price for NOT staying at Sierra Mountain Inn! Used to be an okay place, but now… in my opinion the owners have become shady characters for sure. Steer clear and head to any of the places in town — it will be nicer and you will pay the same price or less!

Great, quaint place to stay. It is so much better than those expensive brand hotels.
The owners are terrific. They will help you with your vacation or business needs.
You can walk a few blocks and enjoy the quaint atmosphere and all that Grass Valley has to offer or drive to Nevada City. There is a lot to see and do nearby! Enjoy!

Clean, cozy, no frills place. One desk person nice, the other seems to hate her job.
The bed was well padded, but squeaked.
Shower is small, water hot enough, but no more.
Kitchenette is sink, microwave and refrigerator. Be sure to make sure fridge is turned on.
Heater is stand alone, old and very efficient. If you don’t mind that it is a bit loud when running, not clunking, but fan noise, it is nice. It is kind of like white noise.
For the price and location, it was a good deal.
One important note, there is a 72 hour cancellation policy. Also, they have you sign a folded sheet of paper when you check in. Ask them what it is, which when revealed is mainly a
pay $ 250 cleaning if you smoke in your room.

We are locals but live far enough away from town that we wanted to get a room so we could enjoy a night out. We tried to book at the Outside Inn (because our dinner plans were in Nevada City and we didn’t want to drive anywhere afterwards) and since they were full, they recommended Sierra Mountain Inn. We were so happy to find this sweet little place! The owner was so kind and helpful, and she upgraded us to a larger room free of charge, what a nice touch. Our room was very clean and the bed was comfortable, and as one of the other reviews said, there were nice little touches throughout the room… granola bars with the coffee for the morning, and chocolates as well, yum! We will definitely stay here again!

I recently stayed at this «quaint» little place as a result of having to attend a wedding in nearby Auburn and Auburn itself is not one of my favorite towns in CA. So I trekked a half hour out of my way to find this little out of the way establishment. I have a very mixed review but the net result of all I have to say is that overall this is not better than a 2 star endeavour. I really can’t understand the 5 star ratings. Firstly, it is way overpriced at 129 per (80 tops would be much more in line) Secondly, the bed itself was superior and very comfortable. The hot water did not run out as it sometimes will in these littler places and the room was quite clean. All of this was on the positive side but… there are lots of minuses here as well. The room I had was poorly (and I mean POORLY) lit and was dim and dingy. The furnishings all looked like they were haphhazardly gathered from Salvation Army and were tacky in the extreme. The adjacent rooms on either side of my room could be clearly heard and the place was very noisy (gurgling water pipes from both sides, a toilet in my room that needed to have the water manually turned off to keep it from running) Not enough towels and they did not even match each other and an absolutely horrible set of «blinds» that did nothing to keep out the light bulb that was turned on right outside the room’s front window and left on all night. I managed to compensate by hanging a blanket over the window and buying my own light bulbs to swap out with the tiny 15 w things that were in the lamps. Worst was the horrible recliner chair that looked like it belonged in the lobby of a skid row hotel. Also present was a horrid wall clock that made a clicking noise with each second. I finally took this down off the wall and stored in the bathroom wadded up in towels. So we have ³¹⁄₂ for bed and shower and ½ for amenities and atmosphere and zero for the price (ie this is a BAD value) One final tacky piece was that an enevelope was left in the room indicating that it was a «tip» envelope for «housekeeping» none of whom were in evidence anywhere. I really wanted to like this place but I honestly would never stay here again nor can I recommend it to anyone. Not good!

I’m certain the handful of good reviews for this place are either the owner, or people that do not travel much with low standards. Had a short business trip in the area and there were not anything available in the typical Sheraton/​Hilton chains that I stay 200 nights of the year, so thought I’d give a local inn a try, as it was close. Sadly, it was a bad decision. When I mentioned where I was staying to the locals at the hospital I was working at, they cringed and said it used to be a run-​down, nasty homeless shelter that someone bought up and tried to remodel. they indeed have remodeled their rooms, the marble walls in the tiny shower and new counter tops probably wow the casual traveler. However, the mattresses was old and lumpy and the stories of the place made me fearful that this old bedding may be infested with bed bugs or something; however, the only bugs I found were beetles, ants and spiders in the room… not great, but could have been worse, I suppose. Even the «need maid service/​do not disturb» sign was covered in dead bugs and spiderwebs… housekeeping is not a strong point here. The old 19″ CRT TV on a wall stand in the corner of the ceiling and the thin walls that make you feel like you are in the traffic outside scream cheap motel despite the new coats of paint and pretty shower. The final straw was when they charged me for a 2^nd day after I had, in advanced, cancelled the 2^nd day of my original reservation. They indicated that the travel agency I booked it through would need to call to get my reimbursement, but when the agency called, the owner refused to grant the reimbursement, leaving me to dispute the charges with my credit card company. The place had only 3 – 4 guests, so it wasn’t like they are booked to capacity to miss out on even a late cancellation… just gouging to make up for lack of business. Stay away…

We just took a trip up 395, Lake Tahoe, and then across to grass valley and then back down to yosemite/​sequoia etc and then back home to Palm Springs
Out of 7 nights in various hotels this place was the best of them all.
Comfortable beds, friendly owners, friendly guests, just downright nice overall.
We looked at a couple of other places in the area, but, yuck! They were either priced the same and looked like, well, not very appealing at all, and the corporate hotels were way overpriced.
If you are looking for a non corporate place with owners who care about their guests, then this is it.

Small old-​style motor court type motel with two of the units separate from the two other banks of rooms. We stayed in one of those two separate ‘cottages.’ Perfect. Clean room. Quiet. Very friendly staff.

This little in was a fine place to stay over the fourth when all of Nevada City was packed. Our room was not decorated, large or fancy (room3), but it was very clean and the bed was comfortable.

Great little place just a couple of blocks from the historic downtown area.

Would stay here again when visiting the Grass Valley area.

My husband and I recently stayed at this wonderful spot in Grass Valley. The owners were very helpful with directions, and showed us around the property. Huge shade trees cover most of the property, keeping it cool on hot summer days. Our queen room was cozy, well-​equipped and very clean. Next visit, we plan to take a larger king room with kitchenette so that we may explore the Summer Nights street fairs in both towns (Nevada City is just four miles North on Highway 49).

I booked a room here after being referred by the Outside Inn in Nevada City, which was fully owing to the Father’s Day bike races. Sierra Mountain Inn did not disappoint! The owners were extremely gracious and helpful, and the facilities were amazing for the price. I had a spacious room which was also immacuately clean, with a very comfortable bed and mini-​kitchen. Located walking distance to town but far enough away to have a sense of peace and quiet. Thanks for a great stay!

We just spent the week at Sierra Mountain Inn, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is quiet, clean, and convenient, and as other reviewers mentioned, nicely decorated. The bed was good. I would have liked a shower head that gave a wider spray, but that was only a minor negative that can easily be fixed. The owners are friendly, helpful and accommodating. As we checked out, we reserved our room for next year’s trip! This is the fourth place we’ve stayed at in Grass Valley, and by far the best.

We Have stayed here 3 times in the last year as we visited Grass Valley scoping it out as our new home. Really enjoyed its proximity to downtown and being able to walk to all the restaurants. We’ve stayed in a number of the rooms, all quiet and clean (and my husband is picky about cleanliness!) The care-​takers and owners are all really friendly and accomodating. No complaints here and we will recommend them to all our friends who come to visit.

My hubby and I got the opportunity to stay for a second time this past weekend. Quaint. Quiet. Clean rooms. We have stayed in different rooms both times we have stayed and liked both. Excellent.

Not directly downtown, but up a slight hill and easy walk — perfect for getting a little exercise before and after you have a wonderful meal at any one of downtown Grass Valley’s restaurants.
The people are nice, the rooms are pleasant with a variety of configurations (including a unit with beds in separate rooms if that’s appropriate for you). I go here when in Grass Valley because I’m surprised at all the chain hotels that have popped up, creating an over-​supply, but I’d rather support the home team.

The Sierra Mountain Inn is one of those rare places that you fall in love with the first time you visit. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the staff treats you like part of your family. If you’re planning a trip anywhere near Nevada City or Grass Valley I highly recommend staying here. Wish I could give them 6 stars :)!!
