Not sure why anyone would give this place 4 stars. Mushroom omelette looked and tasted like it was not made with real eggs… fat and dry with grey mushroom juice running around the plate. Ugh. Hash browns not crispy. Coffee did not arrive for 20 minutes after we got there. Lackluster hamburger that had nothing going for it. Big biscuit with the omelette with a weird consistency that turned pasty in the mouth. All in all a waste of 25. for a meal for two that we could not eat half of… just quit eating once we weren’t starving anymore.

I stop for breakfast at Penny’s every time I’m up in the mountains and I’ve never been disappointed. Pro tip: be sure to get a biscuit instead of toast with your meal.

When my friend said that she wanted to come here I was not looking forward to it. Right when I walked in I thought to myself«uhhhg, this place is awful.» My friend said that it looked like a super old Mel’s Diner. I agreed, the décor is pretty tired and unattractive… However, the service was great and to my surprise the food was great too… which is the most important part. It’s one of those small town funky gems. I got the Philly cheese steak sandwich and I upgraded my french fries to chilli cheese fries(I was having a fat day) My friend got some kind of turkey sandwich… fried turkey or something like that… and she said it was very good :) Good portion sizes and I felt like it was well worth the money.

I have had more than a few meals at Penny’s, a variety of their omelette offerings, and a few burgers and more. The service has always been friendly and prompt. Penny and Chuck and the entire family have done a great job creating and maintaining a great atmosphere at Penny’s Diner, it always feels good to walk in their and be greeted with a smile and as a friend, not just another customer. They do a lot for our community also, so return the favor and visit this great local business!

There’s not much to choose from in Grass Valley when it comes to good food at an affordable price(trust me… in New York City I eat out for less), but Penny’s Diner is by far the best option I’ve found after having been out for breakfast a few times in the area. It’s a bit more expensive than a small town diner should be, but high prices seem to be the norm in these parts. Also, the coffee is super watered down and flavorless, but that’s been the case everywhere I’ve ever gone to in Grass Valley/Nevada City. Service = excellent.

First visit recommended by couple on the street. Sort of fifties diner ambience and a pretty basic menu. We went for a late breakfast. Food was good but service was excellent. Waitress was mature and worked very hard. She may have been the only one for 35 to 40 customers. She anticipated your every need and was pleasant even though stretched thin at times. I was very impressed. I’ll go back gladly and try something different on the menu. Price was very reasonable– three of us ate for $ 17.00

This place is awesome I go here every time I’m down in grass valley. They have fair prices and those eye candy waitresses(; anyway it’s great because I’m eating a lot healthier now so I get the New York steak with egg whites and whole wheat toast with out a problem. When you’re up in the gold country come check it out!

We visited Penny’s on Thursday afternoon. I ordered a cheese omelette with hash browns and toast. My hubby ordered eggs Benedict. Our server was very friendly and was on point with bringing us everything I need. The food was really good with amazingly reasonable prices. My husband was really impressed by the hollandaise sauce. He even commented that he can’t remember the last time he has had such a delicious eggs Benedict. Overall, I was very happy with my experience at Penny’s. We will be back for sure

When my husband and I first walked in, there was no one to greet or seat us. Took someone from the kitchen to walk out and alert the waitresses that we were there. Not a good start. Then there was the food. The hash browns were the best part of the meal. The rest left a lot to be desired. They serve FROZENHAMBURGERPATTIES! Might have been the worst burger ever in the history of burgers. When my husband asked it it was a re– heated patty the cashier laughed and said we dont do that. Well sir, if you are serving a frozen patty, you basically are serving reheated food. No offer of a discount or apology over the horrible food. Needless to say we will not be going back.

This was a cute little place, better than the chain restaurants for sure. We didn’t have to wait at all, the bus boy and our waitress were both very friendly and attentive. The food was reasonably priced and came quickly. I had the Eggs Benedict(minus the ham) and thought it was delicious! I will definitely go back here again. Super kid friendly, too.

By far, the best breakfast and service in the area, hands down! They often have some south of the border dishes that I wouldn’t give a thought of trying elsewhere. great!

I have only had take out from here, but the hash browns were cooked perfectly not at all greasy and my breakfast burrito was excellent… lots of egg and bacon not a lot of fillers. No grill oil flavor that I cant stand. We will be back.

Little diner tucked out of the way in a strip mall but its where locals go. Interesting selection of diner food with some lighter fare too. Wait staff was friendly and helpful and I will go back for more.

Super friendly service and nice 50s diner décor. Food is standard diner fare, nothing fancy. My order has always arrived fast and been cooked right, no burnt toast or hairy food. My coffee is always full and I love the biscuits with honey. Check it out if you miss Humpty Dumpty, you will find yourself going back.
