Chapa-De Indian Health Program

I am only giving this a one star review because Unilocal requires that you give it something. Although I will say that maybe it deserves one star because the reception staff is so nice and courteous but as far as the dentists and «doctors» are concerned, this place is sub par.
Let me start with the medical side. First of all, Chapa-​de does not have any doctors at their Grass Valley location. The staff calls them doctors and they refer to themselves as doctors but they are actually Nurse Practitioners. This means they are trained diagnosticians but did not go to med school, go through residencies or specialties or anything like that.
My husband’s first visit to Chapa-​de, I was home pregnant and on bed rest. About an hour after he left for his appointment, he texted to say the «doctor» as she referred to herself was sending him to the ER! I was panicked and called a neighbor to take me to the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, I soon discovered that this supposed doctor didn’t know what the heck she was doing. My husband had gone in because he had muscle pain weeks before but it took so long to get an appointment, it had stopped hurting by the time he had his appointment. Those muscles happened to be pectoral muscles so I told him to keep the appointment anyway so they could identify what had been wrong. When he told her about the pain he had weeks before, she freaked, called 911 and put him on an EKG. When the ambulance driver arrived, he was very confused and asked why he was taking someone with no heart issue complaints to the hospital for a possible heart attack. Upon arriving in the ER, the nurses and doctors were baffled as to why my husband was there. He was having muscle pains, not chest pains. Not heart pains. The EKG was totally normal. They ran tests to be sure, but all expressed that it was a waste of all of our time and money. We were frustrated but were willing to try a different doctor at Chapa-​de because one bad «doctor» shouldn’t spoil our entire experience.
Fast forward a few weeks to the dental side of things. After receiving a few fillings, my husband mentioned to me that a tooth we knew to be bad and in need of a root canal from our previous dentist, had been filled. I remarked that it seemed odd to fill a bad tooth but my husband said the dentist said it was just temporary until they could get him a referral to have a root canal done. Fast forward a week to his ears, throat, face and jaw hurting. Thinking it was a possible ear infection or strep throat, I got him a doctor’s appointment right before Thanksgiving. He went in and saw Medy a «doctor» as the staff referred to her (really she is a nurse practitioner) and she told him that his glands were swollen but really, his problem was that he lives on a hill and his ears hurting is from elevation changes. He told her that it seemed strange to have it just pop up after 10 years of living in the same house but she said it was nothing to worry about and that he needed to clear his ears more often and it would be fine. He came home, still with ear, throat, nose and jaw pain and a diagnosis of ears popping due to elevation changes. Uh huh. I started looking to see if there was somewhere else that he could go.
Fast forward two days and he is in some serious pain. The glands on the left side of his jaw were the size of golf balls and he was very ill. At this point, he was thinking that since the doctor said it was just elevation changes that maybe he should see the dentist. Maybe it had something to do with the bad tooth that they put a filling over. So we called the dentist and got him an appointment. On the day he went in (a week after seeing the doctor) he could not eat, could not open his mouth and the whole left side of his face was swollen to the point that it was forcing his eye shut. The dentist said it was probably due to the tooth as it was infected (then why did they put a filling over it!!!) and gave him some antibiotics and sent him on his way. After two days of antibiotics, my husband was only getting worse. He couldn’t eat or sleep, and he walked around the house holding his face, moaning in pain, had hot and cold sweats, a fever and was literally eating ibuprofen like it was candy. It was horrifying. I called the dental office and talked to the receptionist and while she was nice, she laughed off the idea that maybe this had turned into a blood infection since the antibiotics had done nothing and he was only getting worse. She spoke to my husband (who could barely talk) and told him she would speak to the dentist and call back. When she called back she said they didn’t have any appointments but that he could go to the ER.
Upon arriving at the ER, they went into motion quickly, got him into a bed and said he was in the beginning stages of sepsis! They admitted him to the ICU and he spent three days in the hospital! He could have DIED all because of the inept care at Chapa-​de.

I have been seeing doctors here for several years, they are awesome!
The referral dept. is wonderful. They have just finished the remodel of the buildings and boy is it nice.

I don’t know what happen with the other reviewer but you know I can honestly say this place is by far the best dental office I have been to. From the front desk Anna to my dentist «The Singing Dentist» as they call her. Have been totally super & for the first time in my life I can say I look forward to going in… Great Job!!!

Worst dental office staff I’ve ever seen. So much so that I will never return after over a year of treatment. I was going to the Grass Valley location and the staff there is TERRIBLE on the dental side. So much so that I actually drove an hour for my appointment and walked out crying before even being seen. Since the dentist works at both offices I moved over to him in Auburn. For the most part he’s fantastic.
The staff at the desk in Auburn is wonderful as well.
Their management on the other hand is the worst imaginable. I’ve spent 2+ months trying to speak with the manager Kathy regarding my tooth because I’m paying them to remove my old crown and put on a new one and they removed the wrong crown. So now I’m without a crown where I had a perfectly good crown and am out money as well. Then on top of that they told me my portion would be so much and then after they removed my crown they said on the way out it’s $ 50 more. Seems like they could’ve told me that in advance. I paid $ 100 that day so that’s money I’m out and for 2 months I’ve been without a crown because after having them reattach the temporary 7 times and having them break when just eating soft foods I realized I’m just wasting my gas driving there 2 times a week to have a temporary attached.
So needless to go into more detail but a recap on my experience.
I’m having food get under my crown in front of the back tooth (in between the two teeth) and they couldn’t see it on the X-​rays but did confirm that there’s a tiny lift there. They called me with my treatment plan to give prices and said my portion is only $ 150 because I’m native and mailed me a copy showing that. No approx or anything. After removing the wrong crown and me paying $ 100 they said I owed another $ 100. Mind you that crown was PERFECT before they removed it and I’ve now spent $ 100 plus approx 10 trips from Yuba City to Grass Valley/​Auburn just for the work and the temporaries that wouldn’t stay on. Which I discovered that is partially due to the assistant not holding it or having me bite down for 4 mins. Which I have the cement from them and it clearly states that. When I attached it myself it stayed on way longer and I have no dental experience.
Another note– The assistant that was with Dr. Young when he removed my crown hit two of my front teeth 19 times, yes, 19 times when going in and out of my mouth and also tore the side of my lip pulling on it so hard. My teeth she hit are still hurting two months later and became loose after that appointment. Dr. Young said there’s nothing in the scan showing what’s wrong with them and that it was just from so much impact so they’re bruised and will get better. I couldn’t bite into food and hot hold hurt. Now they don’t hurt as bad but they shouldn’t be «bruised» two months afterwards. I’m sure something is wrong with them. I later learned from her that she was brand new and came from Western Dental.
If I could go back. I WOULD! Back before ever going to Chapa De that is. My other crowns all cost me a lot more but I’ve never had a temporary pop off over and over and break so many times.
My dental heath a year+ ago before seeing them was way better. This isn’t my first issue there.
Sadly there’s more but I don’t think anyone will even read it but I feel like you need to be warned.

This review is for the dental services department.
I really wanted to have nice things to say about this place, since I had nothing but positive dealings with them in the past (for services other than dental). However, the opposite is now the case. I recently had a painful broken tooth and called to start the process of getting it fixed. I called on a Friday, and after repeatedly getting an answering machine, I finally got a person who told me to call back Monday. Come Monday, I called nearly a dozen times before finally getting a real person to answer the phone. I explained that I had a painful broken tooth and am interested in being seen for it. The receptionist sound rushed and busy and I had to explain myself several times before she seemed to understand me. Finally I was told I could be seen for an initial exam the following day, but the actual appointment to fix the tooth would need to be booked 3 weeks out! Apparently 3 weeks is their policy, from what I was told? It did not matter that I was in pain and had cash in the bank to pay for my appointment. I don’t know anyone in their right mind who would wait 3 weeks to get a painful broken tooth fixed! If they are really that busy and understaffed, they ought to consider hiring more help (starting with a real receptionist!) instead of mistreating potential customers.

I am writing my review solely on the Dental side of Chapa De. I had to work kinda hard to get in as a new patient here because of my insurance, but it was well worth the wait.
I have some serious dental work that needed to be done. My teeth were destroyed after having gastric bypass surgery and losing about 175lbs. So, I need to have all of my remaining teeth removed and I need full dentures. Kinda sucks, but I am ok with it now.
I saw Dr. Young. He is awesome. He has a wonderful bedside manner and is very gentle. He explained what needed to be done and then created a treatment plan with me.
On my last visit, I had to have an extraction and needed shots on the roof of my mouth. Holy crap! Those are no joke! The Dental assistant was so sweet. She talked me through everything and reminded me to breathe. She even held my hand through it. Such a sweet gesture!
I love Chapa De! I highly recommend them. As I said above, my review is solely on the Dental side and my experience with Dr. Young

I have been through my share of clinics from the armed forces to Kaiser to top shelf PPO care and I feel that I have gained some perspective. Let me say that this health center is spectacular. The campus is clean, modern, secure, and well kept. Staff members are professional and friendly. The doctors, nurses, and assistants show deep care and concern for all patients and the care administered is truly awesome. I have used this organization for over 8 years. Chappa-​De is an asset to all communities served. I enjoy brining my family here.
