And While You’re Away

I and the Gordon Setters’ co-​owner have been attending Nancy Creal’s Movin’ On Up obedience training for several classes and started dog therapy work under her program. We have never had such an excellent trainer! Not only are all the basic obedience commands taught, but activities that include some agility and some rally are included to make the class fun for both the dogs and the humans! The approach is totally positive and the trainer is well-​skilled at working with all breeds of all sizes. She is sensitive to individual needs and goals, such as having conformation dogs sit upon command (verbally and/​or by gesture) but not automatically. She stresses to work at your dog’s level, which fosters bonding with and understanding your dog. She individualizes her approach to fit the dog and the owner and does not use a ‘one size fits all’ technique. Nancy understands the idea that rewards can be treats, but other things (such as praise, tone of voice, petting, toys) can work as rewards to reinforce desired behaviors as well. Class time flies by and all you see and hear are wagging tails, laughter, applause, and praise. The human students support each other, praising others’ dogs (as by calling out «Nice job» or «Well done»), not just their own. It makes for a very pleasurable environment and experience, which is very effective. Nancy knows the AKC rules for obedience and rally titles so, for those who do want to compete, that training is available and given. In short, there’s something for everyone! No matter what age, no matter how much training, I highly recommend you bring your dog to the Movin’ On Up classes – it’s more than just ‘obedience training’ – it’s a fun activity to enjoy with your dog. So put your paws down and ‘move on up.’
